This was a dream cosplay shoot for me. I mean, Phoenix was a character I've been itching to pull off a cosplay shoot on. I've attempted Phoenix several times with a lot of learnings in the process instead of a final shot. But we kept at it, believing that one of these days we would be able to do justice to the character. After more than a year of researching, and imagineering... I hope this new attempt of ours would also ignite your imagination.

The elements you see in the shot were taken through photography. We shot every bit, parcel, and what-have-you, then pieced them all together in post-production.

This is the toughest cosplay shoot we have done to date in terms of effort and time. Took about two weeks and to wait for the right weather to shoot the background.

This was a dream cosplay shoot for me. I mean, Phoenix was a character I've been itching to pull off a cosplay shoot on. I've attempted Phoenix several times with a lot of learnings in the process instead of a final shot. But we kept at it, believing that one of these days we would be able to do justice to the character. After more than a year of researching, and imagineering... I hope this new attempt of ours would also ignite your imagination.

The elements you see in the shot were taken through photography. We shot every bit, parcel, and what-have-you, then pieced them all together in post-production.

This is the toughest cosplay shoot we have done to date in terms of effort and time. Took about two weeks and to wait for the right weather to shoot the background.

Personally I'm not sure whether this could still be classified in cosplay, since the collaboration work is quite extensive from all those involved. I would thank fellow Canon Brand Ambassador Edwin Martinez for providing a stunning stars / "outer space" background image. It's something out of my repertoire, so I called in for his help on this one.

It is a photo-manipulation, but of a person cosplaying as Dark Phoenix.. so I'm not really sure where to put this.

Asides from the things mentioned done in CG, the rest of the elements were done through photography: from the fire, wings, sash, emblem, down to the dust coming out from the Earth.

At the end of the day, people can call it whatever they want... as for us, we just want to make an image of Dark Phoenix. And for those who would comment its too much PS, you guys have the gift for stating the obvious.

Edit: We would be posting how this was done when we finish working on the 2nd study.

The pop-culture scenes in Japan or the U.S. has grown huge mainly of their own market's patronage of their characters. Because of their eventual global influence, other markets end up having to consume them (e.g. Philippines). When we start loving our own home-grown pop-culture enough to tip over the scales, is perhaps the start of the real growth in our local scene.

On Lighting the Image

Just because a scene is "dark" it doesn't necessarily have to be really dark when it is shot. Trese took about 14 lights to accomplish, all of which used small modifiers and honey comb grids. Our eyes and in turn, subconscious imagination process light at a naturally fast pace. So fast, that we don't seem to care, and take it for granted. We needed to step back and look at this process from a 3rd person, and translate how our eyes and mind consume all this information and turn it into actual lighting techniques.

The Alice in Wonderland cosplay shoots became popular when Tim Burton's rendition came out. I know I'm one of the last ones to jump into the bandwagon, but better late than never, right? So many have replicated the tea party scene, so I thought of having my own take at it.

This was done with one shot. The only thing we added in FA / Post-production were the graffiti and smoke.

Probably one of the hardest lighting formations I had to do. Took a total of fifteen (15) lights and three (3) hours of rigging them prior to the actual shoot. Brainstorming and prep time was two (2) weeks, sourcing the odd stuff you find in the set. The actual shoot didn't last for more than thirty (30) minutes.
