Homework

I've been taking Sam Nielson's advanced lighting class, which is truly excellent ( [link] ), and this is one of my assignments. I was given a simple line drawing of the blue sphere, the glass cup and the grapes on a checkered plane, and then I had to paint it with a strong light source in order to understand the translucent properties of light (caustics, reflection and refraction, and sub-surface scattering). I tried to turn my composition into a table in a witch's cottage.

Pretty pleased with how this game out, but man did it bend my brain.

Elizabeth Bathory

Some of you may remember this painting I did back in 2009: [link]

The story goes like this -- I has gotten a new (supposedly) badass computer, which it turns out was a lemon, that blue-screened nearly constantly and with no provocation. The Elizabeth Bathory CHOW for ConceptArt.org was the first painting I did on that computer, and it was honestly the best painting I had ever done - until the computer did a BSOD in the middle of saving an iteration and corrupted not only my new file, but my old working PSD too. I lost the whole thing, and it was awful. I finished ... something... in time for the challenge, but I never was happy with it.

I put this away for a year, and then started this REALLY ambitious re-paint. Now, two years after that - working very sporadically on this from time to time - I think it's done.

Elizabeth Bathory is also known as the Blood Countess - one of the first female serial killers and one of the first modern vampire myths. More on her here: [link] Most people depict her nude in a bath full of blood, I'd decided to be different and show her recording her victims' names (she had over 650) into her book. With blood for ink, natch.

PS - I left the image kind of large so I can show off the details I am proud of. Don't go stealing stuff and make me put a watermark on it. <3

I wanted her to be the devil, not just some tattooed girl, and load it with lots of snake and apple and occult imagery. Woot.

For the (sort-of) Annual ConceptArt.org All-Girl Thunderdome this year. Topic was "Something Wicked This Way Comes..." which was probably the most awesome topic ever.

I based mine VERY loosely on the 2012 doomsday cult built around the Mayan Calendar... some kind of horsewoman (snakewoman) of the apocalypse and Quetzalcoatl and a little human sacrifice. Trying to make myself consider whole illos and backgrounds and all that stuff...

Part 4 of 6

Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, the arts, industry, justice and skill. She was the favorite child of Zeus. She had sprung fully grown out of her father's head.

Athena and her uncle Poseidon were both very fond of a certain city in Greece. Both of them claimed the city and it was decided that the one that could give the finest gift should have it. Leading a procession of citizens, the two gods mounted the Acropolis. Poseidon struck the side of the cliff with his trident and a spring welled up. The people marveled, but the water was as salty as Poseidon's sea and it was not very useful. Athena's gift was an olive tree, which was better because it not only gave the people food, but also oil and wood. Athena named her city Athens.

This is the fourth of a six piece portfolio for Independent Study in Digital Drawing, with piece examining a uniquely feminine trait as represented by a goddess. Athena represents wisdom.

I had trouble choosing, I settled on 3 - Havana, Cuba; Austin, Texas; and St. Petersburg, Russia. In the end, I have the deepest affinity for Austin, having lived there for a while (I want to move back SO BADLY), so I went with her. She is kind of the chick everyone wants to date or be in college, she's impossibly cool, she's the live music capital of the world, she loves nature and her Longhorns, she's a biking city (I mean, Lance trains there!) <3 Austin

My original painting of this one got corrupted by the bluescreen-a-day old computer, so I've had to scramble to finish on time, and it shows. I totally want to go back and rework this one again, but I like the countess herself. This was also one of my early attempts at getting environment/background involved in my character pieces.

Agonized over this for months and finally scrapped all my other ideas in the last 2 days and went for Ophelia (fr. Hamlet) floating in the river, dead. I'm so so on this piece right now, what with being burnt out with the competition (also, my match looks BRUTAL, wish me luck)

Collaboration with my friend

For a contest over on ConceptArt.org, two teams, light and dark, competing RPG style for art supremacy. Yeah, cause we're cool like that. We kinda messed it up, tho, because we worked together.

The Light Goddess of the Leaves and the Dark God of the Leaves.

Also note, this is HUGE and will require side scrolling. So there.

Medusa the Queen

This was CHOW #100 - Medusa the Queen

Edit (01.16.2008) - Turns out I won CHOW 100. Woo!

Medusa was a beautiful nymph, loved and pursued by many, though she spurned all her suitors. The God Poseidon was even entranced with her beauty, so much so that he accosted her in Athena's own temple and raped the lovely creature. Athena, so enraged over this defilement of her sanctuary, sought her revenge. She could not lash out at her great Uncle, so instead she turned the nymph into a hideous beast, so that any man who should look upon her would be turned to stone.

Medusa, ashamed, angry, and already pregnant with Poseidon's child, Pegasus, went into hiding, where the great "hero" Perseus later found and beheaded her.

Was going for an overload of symbolism and what not. And learning how to REALLY paint with my PhotoShop. Go PhotoShop! Also had to bang this one out, as I was dashing off to Seattle for the CA Workshop. Man, my mind is still reeling, and I am running about like a headless chicken sending out resumes and portfolios... So much to do, so little time.

Minos

The King of Crete, step father of the Minotaur (his wife was made mad and cursed with zoophilia because Minos would not sacrifice a magnificent white bull to Poseidon, she then mated with the bull and produced the Minotaur monster of legend.) Also, in Dante's inferno, he is made a judge of the dead.

Birthday Surprise
