● What is Rain?

Nearly a year and a half after first announcing that I wanted to post Rain in webcomic form, I at long last give you… the first page! Da-da-daaaaa! ^_^

For those of you only discovering this right now, Rain is a slice-of-life/comedy/drama that follows the life of a teenage male-to-female transsexual named Rain (coincidentally!) attempting to go through her senior year in high school identified only as a woman. It's intended to be a comedy, but it will also touch on some heavy subjects including acceptance from family and piers, blind hatred, and many of the other difficulties faced by members of the GLBT community. I write a lot of stories to put it bluntly, but Rain in particular holds a special place in my heart, perhaps due to its semi-autobiographical nature.

So, this is the first of hopefully very many. I hope it’ll be a long run that everyone will appreciate. ^_^

(It should be noted that the majority of the comic is in color. I plan to use black and white for flashbacks though.)

Poor, little Ryan.

Let it be said, that I’ve read MANY webcomics in my time. And I have at least a dozen times seen a point in which the author attempts to put some serious moments into their otherwise “joke of the day” comic for the purpose of directing the story. There are always a few understanding people who want to see where the author will take this direction (like me). But I’ve noticed some people actually get bent out of shape over it too “because it’s not what they’re reading the comic for”.

So, let me get this out of the way right now: Rain IS a comedy, but it’s also a drama. Just as in life, sometimes there won’t always be a punchline. (And then, sometimes the joke is in the middle of the page rather than the bottom. I like to spice it up, you see.)

Oh, and I'm not sure if this is obvious or not, so I'd like to add that the woman is "Ryan's" mother. The other kids are older siblings.

I can’t believe this is up to page 7 already. Where does the time go? ^_^

ANYwho, the first thing anyone’s going to notice about this page is all of the random uncolored students in the background. This was initially done on purpose so I could have random folks in the background without making unimportant people stand out too much. I ultimately dropped this idea when I decided to make all of the other students potentially useable characters (see here - [link]), so this is actually the only page that does this. I meant to go back and fix the coloring, but got sidetracked with my eagerness to move on with the story beyond here.

So, I’m just gonna go with the excuse that it’s symbolic; yeah, symbolic... that's the ticket! Rain is trying to pretend they’re not there to make herself less self-conscious. So rather than seeing classmates normally, she sees these almost transparent people. “They’re not real; they can’t be. No need to be self-conscious.” But then she enters her classroom to find two classmates (and future important characters as of next Monday) in color, as her mantra starts to wear off and she begins worrying just how difficult the coming year is going to be for.

That’s not bad actually, for having just made that up now. Significant, meaningful, and totally believeable. I’m kinda proud of that. Clever symbolism as an excuse for laziness - boo ya.

I hope it’s not too subtle. I wasn’t sure how else to depict Rain’s voice suddenly coming out ALL wrong.

This might sound kind of strange, but this is actually one of my favorite pages so far as it is based on one of my own very epic fails… and epic wins. Who wants to hear about the true story that inspired it? Well, I’ll tell you anyway. ^_^

About five years ago, on what was very possibly my first real outing into the real world presenting as a woman, a couple knowing friends and I went to a diner. I’m always quiet, but I don’t think I opened my mouth once from the moment we stepped outside. Not until it came time to order. What came out of my mouth though was not the female voice I’d been practicing all along to myself though. It was as though being silent for so long rendered me unable to find it on the spot like that. The end result sounded like Mickey Mouse trying to do falsetto after having already sucked in some helium. I was so embarrassed, and my “wonderful, supportive friends” burying their faces in their menus to try and hide their laughter wasn’t helping. The funniest part: the waitress never caught on (or at least, she never gave the slightest inkling that she noticed anything was up). Maybe she thought it was just some weird inside joke? Whatever the case may be, one of the most embarrassing moments of my life was also kind of a big achievement for me at the same time… because I passed even after practically giving myself away.

So, without fail, I look at this page and I remember that and I laugh. Every time. ^_^

This page is the reason I drew the little cheat sheet of the miscellaneous classmates a while ago (you know, this one [link]). Don’t worry though, it’s not technically necessary to know all of them by name. But it’s probably not a bad idea to get acquainted with them. ^_^

Also, you can almost kinda sorta see Rain’s left eye for the first time. The wacky part: I totally don’t remember drawing it like that.

Huh. I thought I’d have more to say about this one. But all of my points escape me at the moment. These ten-hour shifts at my job are apparently killing my ability to think. Oh well. If you guys have questions about it, just ask as always. ^_^

Gavin and Maria, once again so close to the truth, and yet so far. Rain’s compelling response to Gavin’s question (ie. - running the hell away) has helped to keep her secret safe for the time being, but was that really the best move?

I have to be honest. I’m not crazy about this page. Looking back, I think I could’ve probably condensed this page and the last page into one to make things move along a little quicker. But then I’d have had less time to establish foreshadowing for Maria in the last page, and Rain’s fear of discovery on this page. “Oh… my… god…”

Well, I thought about being a total jerk and just leaving it at that while you wait all weekend to see where things go from there, but there’s actually a number of things I wanted to address about this page.

You see, I have an outline for this comic, but I don’t really follow it all the time. Make no mistake, this crash was always planned; but there have been at least three separate candidates for the other end of the collision (the other two being miscellaneous kids from page 10 - [link]), all of which taking the story in different directions. I opted for this kid instead, whom you’ll get to know quite well in the near future. He’s an important character and this is SUCH a perfect opportunity to bring him in.

And for those of you wondering, “why does that boy have an orange collar instead of a blue one like all of the other students?” Well, as part of the uniform in St. Hallvard High School, the color of the collar (and ends of the sleeves) denotes what grade you’re in:
Red - Freshman
Orange - Sophomore
Green - Junior
Blue - Senior
I will probably clarify this directly within the comic at some point, but really haven’t had a solid means of doing so just yet, so I thought this friendly little reminder might be welcome, as I’m sure a number of you were wondering that.

And on a personal note, I didn’t realize it until earlier today, but I really have to stop using “crashing into each other in the halls” as a device for having characters meet… ^_^ (The Lavender Town fans will get it.)

Well, that probably could have gone better…

To avoid confusion, I’m just going to come right out and tell you this new boy that Rain’s bumped into is named Rudy. He’s Maria’s little brother. Normally, I’d prefer to let the story do the talking, but as I was reviewing the story before posting this, I realized that no one actually addresses him by name for another six pages. So, rather than having comments consist of people calling him “that kid” or something for roughly another two weeks, I’ll just make it easy for you and tell you straight out: it’s Rudy. ^_^

On a side note, Gavin and Maria are still sitting at the lunch table where Rain was eating, waiting for her to come back. Originally, I considered showing them divvying up the remainder of her lunch for humor’s sake. But after more thought, that just seemed like a really jerk thing to have them do…

I ended up changing the dialogue on this one a few times too. Maria’s final line, in particular, originally stated that she thought Gavin was being “emo” because “on the off-hand chance Rudy was right about Rain, he’d owe her ever more money.” As amusing as I thought that was, Maria did technically deny that bet. Plus, no matter how I worded it, it just never felt natural. So while a little funny, I don’t think I really liked the line at all. “I hope she slaps him” though, seems more fitting to me… and is potentially still kinda funny.

Anyway. Super busy page here. It may even feel like two pages. That’s because I ALMOST was! Originally, I was going to have one page just be Aunt Fara lecturing Gavin, and then a separate page for Maria and Rudy cheering Rain up. But I felt like I didn’t really have enough to work with to spread either one out. Hence, I left it as is. I guess I kinda figure it still works since it’s more or less the same scene… I mean, they can probably all hear each other anyway.

And before anyone asks or tries to correct me: Yes, of course I know that “tranny” is typically regarded as an offensive term, and yes, of course I know that it’s not correctt to refer to Rain as a “he” or a “him”. I know that, and hopefully, most of you know that (or do now, at least). Maria and Rudy however, are a little less familiar with the subject though. Supportive as they may be, they’ve only been aware that they know a “real, live transsexual” for maybe about five minutes now and really don’t have the terminology quite down yet. And in my experience, it takes at least a night for even the most accepting people to get their pronouns straight. -_-

Uh… focusing on Rudy again for just a moment, it’s dawned on me only now, that somewhere after page 20, he’s lost his tie. I mean… he WAS wearing it… and now it’s gone. Whatever. It’s after school; he doesn’t have to wear it anymore. He probably just stuffed it in his pocket. And yes, that’s totally viable excuse for forgetting to draw a part of his design for three whole pages… because no, he’s not wearing it in the next page either (LE GASP! Spoiler! ).

Oh, man. So much to talk about on this page. I could probably keep going, but meh… I’ll open up the floor to you guys. It’s time for me to shut up, and you guys to talk. ^_^

Whether you like it or not, a chapter page IS a page. Sure, it offers no plot and might not even literally reflect any actual scene within the chapter itself, but they’re fun to draw and - if I’m doing my job right - fun to look at. For instance, Rain’s face on this page still evokes a smile for me every time.

I might be biased, but I really think it all gets better from here. ^_^

I think it’s abundantly clear by now that I like lots of dialogue, but this page has been toned down rather graciously. Originally, I had an entire dialogue in place with Maria telling some funny story, that random boy trying to ask Rain out, and of course, Rain herself just being neurotic. Then a few pages later, I reread this page and thought it sounded AWFUL. So bad in fact, that I just deleted all of the dialogue. With no dialogue bubbles, the “silent” page kinda spoke to. Then the better idea of having Rain narrate over the scene while this short montage of events occurs came to me. And that worked ever so much better. What everyone's actually saying, we just leave up to your imagination. ^_^

Pay no mind to the random guy. He really is just that: a random guy. After the death glare Maria gave to him, I wouldn’t blame him he ran right out of this comic altogether. And we may never see him again…

Or will we…?

Nah. I didn’t care much for his design, so probably not…

Welcome to my world. I’ve been asked every last one of these questions at one time or another (many of them, more than once). Most of these (and many others) tend to be more likely to induce a facepalm than an answer.

Now, please don’t misunderstand. If someone has questions for me about transsexuality for the sake of better understanding the situation and condition and whatnot, I would be happy to educate others on what I have learned and experienced over the years. I mean, it’s certainly better to ask questions (whether good or not so good) than to make derogatory remarks or accusations. I guess they’re not technically invalid questions, but think of it like this: When I tell someone I’m transgendered, it tends to be a less than easy task for me. So when I entrust this heavy aspect of my life which for better or worse has made me everything I am today, and the first question I get is “do you sit to pee”, I’m going to feel just a little bit insulted.

Anyway, venting aside it IS supposed to be a joke page. I mean, normally I don’t get barraged like this (thankfully). ^_^

Also worth noting is the extremely experimental page layout. I hope it’s not too hard to follow. Just start at the top and follow it down.

Fun fact: I was originally going to keep gym class out of this story altogether. My line thinking was, “I’ll just come up with some excuse, because getting Rain through gym undetected would probably make things so much harder for her.” My first - and only halfway decent - excuse was to give Rain asthma. But then, I asked someone who had asthma if that was plausible, and she said, “maybe if it’s REALLY bad. I still went to and enjoyed gym class.”

Well…

But it was after that that I sort of realized I was just trying to avoid this whole thing out of laziness. So, I told myself to get over it. I’m going all out with every other aspect of the story, why get lazy about THIS of all things? Hence as a result, I actually kept Rain being asthmatic and am still making her take gym class. And heck, this page as a whole is sort of me poking fun at myself for trying to cop out of potentially good drama - trying SO hard to get out of it to have my best idea shot down in seconds.

That’ll learn me to try and be lame like that.

You know, this is probably the most “action” to appear in this comic to date. ^_^

For all of her teasing, there’s probably nobody who cares more about Rain than Aunt Fara. You really kinda can’t blame her for getting upset anyway. It’s frustrating to hear someone speak ill of or make accusations toward someone you care about. It’s even more frustrating when their remarks are completely wrong and baseless. And then it’s downright infuriating when you can’t even tell them why they’re wrong in the effort of keeping a secret. Metaphorically speaking, Mrs. Parker was walking blindly into a lion’s den and stepping on every tail along the way; she didn’t know it, but she kinda had it coming.

And don’t worry, Mrs. Parker will be fine. It’s just a rolled-up, poster-size piece of paper (Fara’s student’s homework). Aunt Fara wasn’t trying to hurt her, after all… just shut her up.

As a side note, it was entirely unintentional, but the pairing of these two characters reminds me vaguely of Yukari and Nyamo from Azumanga Daioh (possibly due to the dramatic poster slap). Mrs. Parker wasn’t originally meant to be that important of a character, but I think I’d like to explore more of this dynamic in the future. ^_^

If not… well, I guess that’s okay too. It won’t really hurt how you see the story for now. Just don't ask me to explain it, because I won't. ^_^

Once again, Rain’s neuroticism knows no bounds. And it’s more or less true. If a person is panicked enough, they may start to fear totally irrational and implausible things. Even though Rain MUST know Mrs. Parker is just teasing and doesn’t actually have X-ray vision, the very minimal chance that she wasn’t lying was enough to freak her out.

Fortunately, Rain can apparently scream like a girl, thus protecting her secret.

This page is particularly special too for a number of reasons. First of all, it was actually just drawn yesterday. Yes, even though I’m 20+ pages beyond this scene, I decided something more needed to be squeezed into this arc (the best part about being ahead of the game). As such, this is actually the first of THREE new pages added into this chapter (although ironically, the last to be drawn). But it’s funny, because now I look at it and wonder how I ever thought not having this page was a good idea… ^_^

The other worthy mention is the art... particularly in the first panel. That panel depicts the very first semblance of a dynamic angle in this comic (you know, something other than perfectly eye-level). And if I may add, it was a really fun image to do and I’m very pleased with how it came out. Now I should probably work at making the rest of the comic so dynamic…

In case anyone was wondering, Rain is trying to stretch out the gym shirt a little. What she’s trying to hide is already plenty hidden, but in case I haven’t driven this point home yet, Rain is neurotic and worries about these things. Of course, it just makes it appear as though she’s posing for Maria or about to curtsy, making a totally innocent gesture appear decidedly cute. Cue overactive teenage hormones and confusion. ^_^

Much like the boys of the previous page, the other female classmates have not been formally named in canon yet, so once again to make things for you:
The freckly-faced redhead is Holly.
The plump, spectacled girl is Debbie.
And the snobby blonde ringleader (who actually HAS been named) is Emily.

It’s funny, because these are the kinds of girls I would’ve HATED in my high school days… and yet, I had so much fun with this page. I would even go so far as to say I regret not having had more opportunities to work with them quite yet (and the boys too, actually).

Sigh… Leave it to me to get attached to my supporting cast.

And yes. FaceSpace. It’s an exceedingly popular social networking site among teens… and practically everyone else too. What? Were you thinking it was called something else? I’ve mentioned this once before, but there is no actual product placement in this comic. That said, I’m all for parodies. ^_^

(I’d like to just point out that the boys would have their own gym teacher, as the boys and girls would normally be separated during gym in this particular school. Incidentally, I didn’t think of anyone for that role yet though, so we’re just going to pretend he’s really late for whatever reason. In this case, Mrs. Parker has every right to yell at even the boys to return order… and apparently pelt people with basketballs? Well, that might just be her getting aggressive as things continue to blow up in her face throughout the day...)

Anyway, that could have gone a lot better. I mean, I guess it COULD have been a lot worse too. Like, a LOT. But it still wasn’t an ideal scenario. I rather feel bad for Rain.

I have mixed feelings about the third row of panels. It’s cute and funny watching her face change as each new thought enters her mind, but I do worry she may have gotten over being sad a little too fast. On the other hand, I hesitate to drag out sadness longer than necessary (at least at this early stage of the game), or I could run the risk of making Rain annoying (which I obviously don’t want).

I realize this a tricky sort of scene and something that may hit home pretty hard for some of my readers. My goal going into this page was to come up with both an absurdly over-the-top reaction (the father) and a painfully real reaction (the mother) and use both in the same context. I hoped I could portray this without detracting from the facepalm-inspiring humor of the one and the shudder-inducing gravity of the other. Did I succeed?

And for those of you wondering where the explanation for Gavin and Maria is: keep your pants on, I’m getting to it. The actual reason is fairly simple, but it does require a little setup. You’ll know the answer next week. I promise. ^_^

On SmackJeeves and Comic Fury, this page is called “Slight Overreaction”. That was apparently one letter too long for DeviantArt though.

I hope you don’t mind the whole “phone conversation” thing. I feel like I use it a lot in this chapter. Admittedly I debated turning this specific scene into an IM conversation just to break it up, but figured it’d be more dramatic to actually have Gavin and Maria physically yelling at each other. Verbal rage for the win (I guess).

I really like this page because I feel like it’s something ANYONE can relate to (making it so delightfully frustrating). I mean, they’re arguing with each other, but they’re kind of on the same side… it’s just a different view from the same side. If they just shut up for a second and listened to each other instead of trying to make their own point, they might even see that.

Poor Maria. I have nothing but sympathy for anyone who thinks they have to feel like this. Having tried to deny my own transsexuality for a majority of my life, I can say that in my experience, hiding something like this NEVER gets easier, emotionally-speaking. Even Rudy feels bad. He wants his sister to accept herself and be happy (although he may have an unconventionally mischievous way of showing it).

Anyway, this page is super talky! (As if you needed me to tell you that.) But I hope it’s not too confusing or anything. There is after all a lot of important dialogue here. Of most important note is the foreshadowing to developments involving the still unrevealed brother, Aiken. But then again, it seems Kellen herself is left out of the loop no matter what side of her family she’s talking to (I’m particularly proud of the punchline in this one).

Little things: Originally, I was thinking of setting actual song lyrics as ringtones for peoples’ phones. I ultimately opted against this for a few reasons though. For one thing - as anyone can plainly see - the page is a little crowded as is, and doesn’t really need MORE words filling it up. Second, I AM trying to avoid any actual products, names, franchises, etc. just to avoid potential legal complication later. It might actually be okay to do it but I personally feel better just playing it safe. Finally, I was still having trouble thinking of exactly what song Fara would have as a ringtone (I’m far too much of a perfectionist to just pick some random song out of a hat). I have narrowed it down to that I imagine her a classic rock fan; just think of your one of your favorites and just hear it coming from her phone. ^_^

Also, Kellen does not actually a psychic link with Aiken. Fara is teasing. If you hadn’t picked up on it by now, Fara teases everyone. That’s what she does. Kellen and Aiken are twins though; that part IS true.

Hey… panel 5 looks a little familiar…

This was actually a tricky page. Many of the poses that Rain is in were not easy as they were uncommon sorts for me to draw. Still, I think the end result worked quite well. Just thanks to character posing alone (as my backgrounds still verily suck), I think panel 4 may actually be my personal favorite artistically in this whole comic so far. It’s just so damned cute.

Also, yes, Rain has a pet bunny. It’s been like forty or so pages since its last appearance, and I still haven’t even said the thing’s name in canon, but yeah, it’s always been there (Its name is Puddle, by the way. Thanks again to ~Suki-chan36 for the name.) I decided I could progress things a little better by adding Fara’s little segment at the end though. Besides, a whole page of a lazily drawn image copy/pasted that many times could get pretty tiring. I even decided to have Rain turn her head once or twice to avoid that.

It’s inadvertent, but this one kinda reminds me of neapolitan ice cream. That aside, I really like it. ^_^ Anyway, there’re a number of significant things to note (but I’m only pointing out the most obvious two):

No school uniforms
- This chapter will be the first to take place almost entirely outside of the school setting. People have wanted it, I’ve wanted to do it, and finally my chance has come. Should be fun.

That girl on the right
- You don’t know her yet. Yes, I’m still introducing characters. There’ll be three new ones in this chapter, but I don’t foresee any need to add more for a while afterward. Not to say I don’t have more characters planned, but it will probably be a long time after this chapter before I bring any other new folks in.

Fifty pages! Wow.

Anyway, introducing a little bit of Gavin’s home life, including his all too doting mother, Simone. I enjoyed doing this page a lot. Despite the ever present feeling of doom that Gavin gives off throughout Chapter 2, he didn’t actually play a big part, and it was pretty much entirely as a bad guy. As such, it was nice being able to portray him as being a little bit more human again.

Fifty pages! Wow.

Kind of amazed I could fit the whole title for this one.

I get such amusement out of watching Gavin become progressively more and more exhausted as the week goes on. And albeit unintentional, I’m further amused by how he kinda looks like Stephen Stills from the “Scott Pilgrim” graphic novels by the time Friday rolls around.

On the other hand, while this is basically a gag page, if I’ve done my job right, you might be feeling sympathetic for Gavin at the same time... once you've finished your hearty laugh, that is.

Centerville Mall, yes. For a long time, I’ve been struggling to come up with a name for the town where the story takes place (even going so far as to consider just never naming it at all). I finally settled on Centerville, which is kind of throwback to an old, abandoned story idea of mine, “Everyday Life”. Although, that story was considerably sillier, as the town was surrounded by other locations like Uptown, Left City and South by Southeast Place. I won’t go that far in this, but I feel Centerville is generic enough to work. In a way, I DO sort of consider “Rain” to be kind of like the successor of that old story, so the name of the town just feels right to me.

Rain (and Aunt Fara’s) outfits were borrowed from the Dirty Picture gag pic I did a while back (except with a slightly longer skirt). Originally, I wanted to deck Rain out in her basic outfit, but I decided I really like her in yellow and wanted to see this again… which is odd, ‘cause I totally never like yellow.

Also, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: my favorite pages to do are STILL those involving Rain and Fara bickering. My maintain my stance. ^_^

This really is a mostly unnecessary page, but man, does it make me laugh. In fact, this really may be one of my favorite pages period. It was so much fun to draw. Plus, Maria’s shyness is adorable, Rudy’s prodding is hilarious, and there’s just a hint of transition and foreshadowing at the end to make the page a little more worthwhile.

The only thing that compares to “Rain and Fara bickering” pages is “Maria and Rudy bickering” pages. I guess I just get a lot of amusement out of watching people who care for each other bicker. ^_^

Oh, and I can't even begin to imagine what sort of ringtone Rudy would have... ♫

I’m wondering how many people read the title of my pages before looking at them, and think “what the HELL is she talking about? Cardboard!?” until actually reading it. ^_^

This is an unusually text-light page, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to take note of. That said, I strongly suspect many people will notice none of these things in favor of remaining focused on the bottom row of panels.
