We were hunters and foragers. The frontier was everywhere. We were bounded by only the earth, the ocean and the sky. We who cannot even put our planetary in order, we who have rivalries and hatreds. Are we to venture out into space? By the time we are even ready to settle in the nearest planetary systems we will have changed. For all our failings we humans are capable of greatness. What new wonders undreamt of in our time will have rot in a generation and another.

As children we fear the dark. The unknown troubles us. Anything might be out there. Ironically its our fate to live in the dark. Head out from the earth in any direction you choose and after an initial flash of blue you are surrounded by blackness. Punctuated only here and there by the faint and distant stars. Even after we're grown, the darkness retains its power to frighten us. Life is a comparative rarity. Life looks for life.

We can recognize a short coming in some circumstances in our ability to understand the world. Characteristicly we seem compelled to project our own nature onto nature. Man in his arrogance thinks himself a great work. Worthy of the interposition of a deity. Our thoughts and feelings are not fully under our own control and on top of all this we are messing up our planet and becoming a danger to ourselves. The trapped door beneath our feet swings open. We find ourselves in bottomless free fall. We long to be here for a purpose. Even though despite much self deception.... none is evident. The significance of our lives and our fragile planet is then determined by our own wisdom and courage. We are the custodians of life's meaning. We long for a parent to care for us. To forgive us our errors, to save us from our childish mistakes but knowledge is preferable to ignorance. If we crave some cosmic purpose then let us find ourselves a worthy goal.

Cascading Milky Way

There are approximately 200 globular clusters which may contain up to 200 billion stars each. The Milky way contains 200 billion stars give or take. These numbers are essential to understanding what a galaxy is but when contemplating this with the human mind, it protests that it cannot be so. Yet the examination of the evidence brings you to the conclusion that it is and if you take that conclusion out on a clear dark night and look up to the night sky you will see something that might change your life. Take a modest telescope and let your eyes adjust to the dark and get the focus just right, you will see that mist for what it really is. More stars. Like dust. Fading into what tastes like infinity. But you've got to have the knowledge, seeing is only half of it. Hopeless gravity. The despair of distance. But I feel safe because I know my world is protected by the very distance others fear. Its like the universe screams in your face "Do you know what I am? Do you know how grand I am? How old I am? Can you even comprehended what I am? What are you ...compared to me?". And when you know enough science you can just smile up at the universe and say "Dude, I am you".

About The Shot
I honestly didn't do a whole lot of editing in photoshop. I cropped, cut, and re-sized it. I also enhanced the contrast and brightness because the initial image (and milky way) was so dark but the rest of it is hardly touched. It is -amazing- how beautiful the stars can be when you are out in the middle of no where. Look up and be humbled by the world we live in and be happy to be privileged the gift of life <3

Sorry for the ugly watermark. Must be there.

This photo doesn't do justice the magnificence of this beautiful place. On the way home from Oregon (visiting my grandmother for Christmas) you pass through a few mountain ranges and beyond the fog and rain this beautiful sight emerged into view.

Towering over the thick relentless weather this amazing sight of rock and snow envelopes the entire scenery leaving you truly breathless. This is one of those things I happened to capture and share with you all.

Spirit lounging on the nice tilled earth (dad was preparing to replant grass). She LOoooooooooooooovvvvved it! I think she was rolling around in it for a good 15 minutes! I caught this after I saw her laying there in a beautiful shaft of light. *mur* She's so beautiful.

For those of you who dont know who Spirit is or are fimilar with her breed. She is 98% Timber Wolf / Hybrid. She was brought to the home from Oregon.
