Based on a magazine illustration I did recently… changed it a bit and then painted in a bunch of stuff from my desk. Ignore the wildy inaccurate perspective work… it looked quirky and charming in my original sketch but now its starting to bother me...

Things to know.
• this is about the 7th or 8th time I've painted the plastic skull on my desk… and yes, I have a plastic skull on my desk.
• no, that isn't really me…. I have a goatee and don't dribble as much when I drink.
• painting multiple drinking cans is less fun than you might think.
• dinosaurs on the other hand are awesome!

Recently purchased a 2006 smart fortwo and it amused me that if I applied a logical sequence to the shapes of the cars I have owned over the years, the next one would, in fact, be spherical.

Of course I had to design it and draw up my old cars….

Part of a birthday painting for my friend - she'll be looking over his shoulder in the finished piece, but it tickled my fancy to do a version with Logan and an annoying cartoon bird. Just don't let Logan know it was my idea - wolverine has some anger management issues and I'd rather he take it out on the bluebird than me.

- Work up from the large overall shape first with general tones and shadows
- Start working out the ribbon like clusters
- Add the small groups and single hairs, usually lighter than the hair groups below it.
- Add the final highlights

Breaking hair down into ribbons or clumps helps save a little time, but there is no real way of getting around just drawing a whole lot of hair strands if you want a somewhat realistic look. ...Captain Shakespeare and his lightening pirates from the wonderful 'Stardust' movie.

Lots of fun to draw - though I didn't really nail the captains likeness as well as I would have liked and the background got a bit messy, but once you are committed on a sketch this size there's no going back!!
