Bun's Day Out

My first casual drawing in nearly a year! This weekend I went to "Rabbit's Day Out" at a nearby vet. Rabbits of all shapes, sizes and colours gathered there to frolic and disseminate information to the mingling humans.

I was inspired to draw rabbits, because RABBITS.

I guess she pretends she's tough, but really she's still quite young and light-hearted...

It was fun to go back to my more usual vector-style, though it took a few incarnations to get them right! I wanted to tweak them more, but I had to finish it off in a hurry.

A homage to Robot Unicorn Attack. As with most of my drawing projects, this was a challenge. I'm very pleased with some aspects, but I know there is a lot that could be improved!

I like that I managed a front-on pose that I didn't really have a reference for. However this did cause some anatomy and perspective problems. I like that this is the first time I've attempted to draw a floating island and I quite like how the rock turned out, but I feel it doesn't quite convey the Robot Unicorn landscape. I'm proud I attempted to draw a background, but I'm apologetic for the tacky stars.

Tamandua sketch from a while back (when I was doing these sketches), hastily scanned and coloured this afternoon. I wouldn't mind inking and colouring him properly one day. I think he possibly deserves it!

A dog breed I spontaneously fell in love with recently... probably only the third breed I've become obsessed with in the last 12 months :> (the first was Shiba Inu, the second was Basenji)

Unfortunately, in my quest for "dog-looking dogs", I tend to gush over the less domesticated and therefore "more naughty" (by human standards) breeds. So naughty that I probably couldn't consider getting one, without quitting my full time job. Entlebucher Sennenhunds don't seem to have made it out to Australia yet, so that makes it even less likely. Ah well :<

Trying more painterly things with Photoshop + Wacom! I'm getting more comfortable with the Wacom pen, but I'm still trying to find a balance between attempting realism but keeping my own style and expressiveness.

Denizens of the Room

Another quick sketch, this time of some of my favourite companions who live in my bedroom.

Peabody the meerkat keeps watch during the night for intruders or other suspicious circumstances (meerkats are good at keeping watch). He sleeps during the day and likes having the king bed to himself. He gets to sleep in on weekends and thinks this is a pretty good deal.

Gloomy is a gloomy bear. He came from Singapore. He commutes into town to network and coffee with potential business partners, and otherwise spends his day thinking up grand schemes for internet entrepreneurialism.

Maximilian is a skeleton euplocephalus. He is sensitive about being a skeleton and would prefer you didn't mention it. He is a recent import from London, where he mingled with high society.

I should apologise for Maximilian's atrocious anatomy. It is my fault, not his.

This was a bit of a test for tablet-sketching (trying slightly different line styles) and using colours.

Origami

It probably did take me almost an hour, all up, to finish one piece of origami. It was a protoceratops from the book Dinogami, which is very cool, but a bit challenging for a novice

Tamadua Sketches

After seeing a tamandua (lesser anteater) on this funny japanese game show video, Domino Animals, I was intrigued and wanted to study and draw them.

Upper sketch was drawn in Photoshop using my Wacom tablet - my first serious attempt at drawing with it. I meant to work more on the rest of the fur, but I tired of it and felt like I had learnt enough from the exercise.

Lower sketches were done a few nights later, pencil on paper. So, so much easier! I think I would have also gotten a better result with my first sketch if I'd done some preparatory sketches first. Ah well

2003-2009 Art Meme

Art improvement meme, [template here].

It was fun to go back through all my old work, though it was hard to figure out which years the 2003-2005 artwork was done - it's all in one big backup folder.

It's weird seeing the ways in which I have and haven't improved. I think used colour better back then, but it's a bit hard to compare. There are more complete pieces from the early 2000s, since I had a lot more time to draw when I was at university than now.

I was slightly dismayed by how little artwork there is in 2008. World of Warcraft has a lot to answer for

Mazil and Hypsilophodon

Me and my lil hypsilophodon friend! He needs a name. I'm thinking Elliot.

I had a lot of trouble with Elly. I wanted him to look like a hypsilophodon - they are spindly, delicate, narrow-snouted - but I also wanted him to be cute. He is pretty little!

The head, arms and legs were more realistic originally, but stylising them seemed to work so much better. I think I could have gone further with the legs, they are the only thing I'm not happy with!

He was also blue, but green really popped against the purple background. Green probably works better on multiple levels, I guess!

Wallpaper I made for my boyfriend, circa 2005. He liked orange and technology and this is what I came up with!

The shading isn't great but I'm quite proud of the overall concept. And the hands.

I think the binary reads "cogito, ergo sum".

This is a mimbi, a Neopets petpet. I think I drew this around 2005, because the Lost City of Geraptiku had just recently been uncovered.

Although I never finished the background in much detail, I'm still quite proud of the composition of this drawing. I rarely finish a piece with a background or think about the composition beforehand - something I need to do more often!

I don't know why there isn't shading on the mane or tail, I think I must have forgot! Or maybe I was still going to add more details - I believe they have flowers in their hair.
