I like my old blue Pamlico so much that I bought a second one for my husband (and also for me...because hey, sometimes you feel blue and sometimes you feel red, you know?).<br /><br />Of course in the tradition of my other kayak, this one had to be decorated as well. The Wilderness Systems kayaks have these long plain bows that are just begging to be painted. My old blue is officially the "Koiyak"...you can see it here: <a href="http://fav.me/d3id8d8">[link]</a><br /><br />Since this is ostensibly my husband's kayak, it needed to be a little more badass than my girly, pretty koi...so I decided on something both nautical and kickass; an octopus.<br /><br />Yes, I know he only has seven legs. Seven is a lucky number, and luck is important when you are on the water. If it really bothers you, you can imaging that the eighth is curled behind him. Or perhaps he lost it in a fight but is growing a new one (cephalopods can do that).<br /><br />My husband has dubbed it the "Kayaktopus", but my brother thinks we should call it the "Cephalo-pontoon". I painted this koi on my kayak yesterday in about an hour, because I thought it might be fun to have a koi on my kayak. <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/smile.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=":-)" title=":-) (Smile)"/><br /><br />It's my favorite kind of koi; the lucky three-colored kind. I think they're called Showa? Tansho Showa? Something like that. I used to know. I made the tail all long and fantastic like one of those dragon koi or butterfly koi or whatever the type...because it's my boat and because I can. I sketched it on there (in white paint) in about 5 minutes.<br /><br />The kayak is a 12 foot Wilderness Pamlico. I love it because it's small enough to be maneuverable, but it is pretty fast and tracks straight. Very stable in the waves. <br /><br />I used my favorite Liquitex paints, and when it was very dry I sealed it with a waterproof acrylic spray. I know this should last a good long time because I paint all kinds of things around the house this way (garden rocks, my mailbox, the garbage can!).<br /><br />I might end up adding some Japanese-looking waves to this. Or maybe a second koi. Not sure! It always seems like magic to me, when the dandelions start blooming everywhere. It's like one day there aren't any and the next day, the fields are FULL of them.<br /><br />What if there was a little fairy responsible for getting the dandelions going? What if her only job was to go about looking for grassy fields and magiking a single dandelion there? You know, it only takes one and before you know it there are thousands of them...<br /><br />So I did this watercolor of her. That's actually based on a photo of myself at 17. I had neither wings nor pointy ears, but I often thought it did. <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/wink.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=";-)" title=";-) (Wink)"/><br /><br />This is one of the few watercolors I "cheated" on...added acrylic paints to get the textured lighter colored grasses atop the darker dune grass. I usually get my lighter effects in my watercolor paintings with masking medium and a careful working-around my white space, but this needed more. It took me less than an hour to complete. <br /><br />I was on vacation in Miami a few years ago and SO BORED. I thought it would be good to take a vacation from my leather mask career for a while, but after two weeks I was crawling the walls, looking for something to do with my hands. It's not in my nature to not make things for even a short period of time.<br /><br />So I bought a really basic set of watercolors from a shop, a cheap pad of watercolor paper, and sat myself under an umbrella on Miami beach and did this painting. I've always loved it...it came very naturally to me in a rush of inspiration (it was a sort of seaweed-maned sandy lion, because I was on a beach after all).<br /><br />I think I used no more than three colors in this painting...a yellow ochre, a burnt sienna, and Van Dyke Brown. Possibly a little black mixed in the darkest brown for definition. I never intended it to be anything special (the real painting is a tiny thing on my wall...no more than 5 inches high) but somehow it remains one of my favorite pieces.
