It's interesting thinking about the childhoods of these girls. We know Belle isn't happy in their village, so clearly she and Maurice haven't lived there long. Maybe the death of her mother forced them into more humble circumstances.

My take on it is that Belle's mother had a well-off merchant family and she grew up on the family estate. There, she was given a little colt named Phillipe who became her joy and best friend. Ten years later, when her mother died, the family left them nothing and evicted Maurice because they didn't approve of his 'layabout inventor' lifestyle(basically living off his wife's wealth). Belle refused to denounce her beloved dad and remain with her grandparents, so they left together, following the traveling fairs and earning their keep where they could. Eventually, they settled in a small village in an almost-forgotten Duchy. Maybe here Maurice's gadgets might find some noble patronage.

Like my version of Kida, Eilonwy's had a bit of a makeover. In her original form, she's kind of a blandly-designed kid with a watered-down pink version of Snow White's dress. So I glammed her up a bit and aged her a few years.
Maid Marian, I just removed the head-dress(because only married women concealed their hair in the middle ages, maidens wore it loose) and gave her boobs

Megara, Pocahontas, Kidagakash, Marian & Eilonwy.
All the outfits are my own designs or variations on their original costumes.

NOTE: ANASTASIA IS NOT DISNEY, so please stop asking where she is. Neither is Odette, Chel, Fiona or anyone from Quest for Camelot. Check your studios before assuming I've made a mistake because it's you who end up looking foolish.

Some of you have SERIOUS trouble grasping the theme of the picture. Esmeralda is a common gypsy girl, both in the Disney movie and the Hugo novel. Not a DROP of royal blood.

Qualifications:
Meg: In some versions of the Hercules myth, she's a Princess of Thebes.
Pocahontas: Duh.
Kida: Duh again
Marian: The origin of the real Maid Marian is uncertain, because there are a few versions of the Robin Hood legend. I included her because in at least two of them, she's either the cousin or the royal ward of Richard the Lionheart. So she's royal by relation or adoption and is nobility at the very least

Cinderella 3 is in stores now. It was the last project my studio worked on before we closed and I'm very proud of it. It's a good story and our animation stayed great to the very end. You can see an extended trailer here.

Once you've seen the clip, this pic will make a bit more sense and hopefully you'll get the joke
Maybe even better, buy the DVD. I know that a THREE sequel is an immediate cue to roll eyes, but as someone who worked on it from beginning to end, I can promise you that this one DOESN'T suck.

Mickey(or any of the Classic 6) is actually VERY hard to get right. You might think he's easy because he's all circles, but 90% of the time, if you tried he'd come out looking Mickey-ish, but not Mickey.
Thank god I have my model sheets, done by Bob McGrath - the Keeper of the Mickey Model.

Anyone ever taken the Backlot tour at Disneyworld and done the 'let's draw Mickey' part at the end? You'd think Disneyworld could hire someone who can actually DRAW to do that part 9_9

edit - did some minor tweaks to his eyes (lowered), skull(rounded) and cheeks (smoothed out). Kids, don't try this at home, even I don't think I'll ever get him perfect ]]>

The costume dates from 1660(specifically this portrait by Sir Peter Lely), about 30 years before Charles Perrault published the definitive Sleeping Beauty tale. I could have dressed Aurora in full 1690's fashion, but by then it was all curls on top of the head and fontanges and manteux with buckets of fussy lace and ribbons (which would eventually become the insane powdered wigs and pannier-gowns of the 18thC Versailles court.)

This has a touch of Photoshop, but it's most coloured pencil.

EDIT: Okay, some people are citing Pat Carroll on the DVD claiming that Ursula is a squid, not an octopus. Personally, I will only accept Ursula is a squid if I hear it directly from her supervising animator. I cite lack of evidence in Ursula's design that DIFFERENTIATES her as a squid from an octopus.
Squid have 10 arms, octopi have 8. The number of arms Ursula has in the movie varies from 4 to 8(so clearly the animation team didn't care much). Both species squirt ink and both are smarter than the average cephalopod.
Wikipedia refers to her as both a squid or an octopus in different entries.
So please don't point this confusion out thinking I have made a mistake. I won't be changing the name of the deviation and I have my reasons for keeping it. ]]>
