</media:community>
A painting that was a long time in the works, 12 or so years. Like my 'Small Shrine in the Emerald Jungle' [link] I painted just a bit when I had a palette out for something else, and then let it sit for a while, drying completely, because I wanted just little streaks of paint of different colors right next to each other streaming out from the center. I just arbitrarily decided when each of these was done, either could have been done a bit sooner, as I was losing detail as well as creating it as I added more dabs. Finally, I just said 'done' because I want to publish pictures, and maybe start another few of these 'side projects' to have sitting around. It's handy to have something to do with excess paint when I'm done with a palette, I hate wasting. The walls and ceilings are good for that too. Those aren't quite as completed, it is quite a bit of furniture rearranging (for the walls) or neck craning (for the ceilings) to work on them. More than once I've thought of building a scaffold inside my room, or maybe bunk beds or something, just so I could lie down while I paint the ceiling, like Michaelangelo did. The name of this piece is a reference to H.P.
Lovecraft's deity, 'Azathoth', which I spell differently for no particular reason, but which is otherwise the same.

Valpigle did a nice remix

Mostly inspired by my own experience digging foxholes and trenches, of which I did a few, all with a small shovel called an entrenching tool. Not that I fought in one, do people even do that any more? But after you've been digging a trench with a toy sized shovel for 12 hours in 100 degree weather, it still feels a bit like hell on earth. Although a bit satisfying to have finished, I must say. Makes digging graves for the cats when they die seem easy by comparison.

This is a bit raw. I left it that way partly because I want a bit of a raw, harried look to the whole series, to sort of bring the viewer in to the way soldiers feel and see when they're exhausted and sleep deprived, and also, just because it's the first one. I'll probably do a couple more detailed as I get into it. Just testing the waters now, the next one'll probably be quick too. I haven't tried to make this an exact copy, just my interpretation of the original. As I've been looking at other artists' work carefully I notice they make silly mistakes they probably didn't notice at the time, just the same way I do. I won't nitpick the original, but it makes me feel good that I'm not the only one who does that. There's always things I notice about my own stuff and I'm thinking 'I can't call this finished it's crap!' but then I show it to someone else and they don't even see what was bothering me so much. Some things are just hard to change once you've gone far enough with the painting.

I've seen various versions of the original on the net, several of them make the coat look dark turquoise, or even bluer. I used a print in an art book as reference. I'm not sure which gives better color interpretation, and I rather like the blue look to the jacket, but I'd guess the color matching put into making an art history book print is probably better than some blog on the internet's rendition. But, I haven't seen the original in person so who knows.

This is unfinished, but it's on a slightly dented piece of cardboard, and I've already spent more time on it than the poor materials warrant, so it's probably all I'll do.

I like the painting overall, but it does have some problems, part of why I left it unfinished, and I'm not sure if they'll bug anyone else as much as me. Like, I shrunk down the size of the foot; it originally filled the whole curve in the hand. Lost the heel on a rework of the hand and never replaced it, now the foot is too small. But when it was bigger it looked wrong too because then the angle of the leg was off. It's not intended to be anatomically correct or anything, but I wanted it to at least be cohesive, and I think in my original sketch I didn't leave quite enough room for the woman's legs, she should be slightly higher in the painting and with thicker legs increasing to an even larger foot. But then I like it like this, and hopefully that stuff won't really bother anyone else.
