Drawing lips tips!

I usually find it easier to get them aligned when I match the cupids bow to the bottom of the nose ^^ ( refer to the lower left corner)

More step by steps too! Once you know the shape of the mouth and lips its easy to apply it to any face angle.

You may use/edit/reference these without any prior permission. All my tips/tutorial sheets are for public use all I ask for is you have fun learning!

Key to drawing hard stuff? is simplifying it! cut it into shapes and remember the shapes and just readjust them when you want to body part to change position/angle etc.

Muscly man arms that is! I need to draw more feminine arms >.> I draw arms a lot don't I?

Just mentioning the red outlined drawing aren't muscle structure, they are just the shapes I use to plan the arm. Like I said in my other tips sheets, dividing anatomy up into shapes makes it much easier to draw consistently Using a reference doesn't hurt either. Studying from real life is the best way to set a foundation for anatomy, then simplifying it into what ever style you like.

Not exactly a full tutorial but this is pretty much the gist of it. Only leave the important lines or the ones that suggest shape depending on how much you want to simplify it.

This really depends on how realistic you want to draw. I recommend learning anatomy then simplifying just so you know how all the muscles, joints work etc. This will give you a better understanding of making poses and anatomy look more convincing.

Here is all I know.. Necks angle forward slightly, the spine joins to the skull just behind the jaw and muscles join from the collar bone to round about the mid neck, ( specially in buff guys :'D)

Like I always say dividing stuff up always makes it easier to remember. Do it piece by piece. Learn the basic shapes then when you are comfortable go to the next level and learn how the muscles join. Then all the fiddly bits. Always good to have an anatomy book with you and also draw from real life and photographs so you can see variance in the human form.

I only drew one body type here though it will still have the foundation for any body type. This one I use in particular...well because I like drawing it and also it shows all the muscle structures XD

Touching upon problems I had drawing females a while back....(backs, stomach, etc)

I've learnt a few new things, ( how to portray the hip bones and the ridge along the spine )

I've covered the naughty bits so I'm not bothering with a mature filter since this is for educational purposes. ( my last one got reported because there were nipples? and some douche face tried to report it as underage nudity because the girl had small breasts? hear that! if your character has small breasts their obviously underage!!!/*end sarcasm)

Damn the goddamn knee is so complicated...well not really but I spend too much time avoiding stuff I find hard... I need to kick that bad habit

Giving a character the expression you want can be a tad difficult at times T.T

Few tips?

Expressions are made up from a combination of the mouth eyes, and brows. Downward pointing brown and angry eyes combined with a smile will make some one look evil/sinister, while the same combination except with an open mouth can show a sort of angered surprise? It all comes down to mixing the right combos to make the right expressions.

Eyes
The eyes are an incredibly expressive feature. This varies from how wide open the eye is ( surprise or anger), to a narrowed eye ( anger ). The skin under the eye lifts up and makes the bottom of the eye appear almost flat when smiling. Remember different muscles will effect the eye according to what emotion you want to portray, I suggest getting a mirror and having a look at your own eye.

Brow
This can be used to easily express surprise, confusion, happiness and sadness. Upward sloping = sadness, surprise downward sloping = anger, surprise, concentration. Horizontal lifted eyebrows = indifference, unimpressed. one sloped up and one sloped down = puzzlement, annoyance.

Mouth
The mouth is pretty straight forward when showing expression, though a smiling mouth will have different meaning when combined with other different facial expressions.

Just experiment and look and see how other people do draw expressions, also looking at real life helps.

Im not sure whether I touched on realism or not.

The eye lid has thickness, this means that the eyelashes dont start directly on the eye, a common mistake.

The eyelids are molded over the globe of the eye, and will follow it as it moves.

They eye lashes point outwards and down slightly then curve upward, they dont point directly up.

There is often a shine where the eye lid meets the eyeball.

If you want to make a monster eye, best to reference, or get inspiration from nature, reptile, fish or squid eyes usually do the trick.

Make sure to practice drawing eyes consistently since they can define a character.

Clothes tips

In a way clothes are the same as hair, there is no exact way to draw it. Just takes a lot of practice.

First things first, apply gravity, the clothes will always be hanging downwards unless theyre in a vacuum, moving or there is wind.

If you want the clothes tight, they should hug the contours of the body. The clothes will stretch on the thicker parts and have less wrinkles, on the parts that taper down, the clothes will start to bunch up and cling.

Different fabrics will behave differently some are more stiff, some are softer, and some are elastic.

For loose clothes, try to pinpoint the part that stick out the most, the clothes will drape from there, e.g. top of the shoulders, chest, arms.

When adding layers of clothes keep in mind the thickness of each garment, since they will build up with each one added.

Some good ways to understand how fabrics behave is to draw clothes out of a magazine or draw your bed cover. Once you have a general understanding its easy to apply.

Skin Tone tips

These are skin tones that Ive collected from some of my pictures.

Usually Ill make the skin tone while Im colouring but sometimes i will take them from a bunch that Ive saved in my pallet.

Making a skin tone is quite easy (for cell shading). Realistic or painting styles colours are quite a lot more complex and require a lot more tones.

Cell shading needs 2 to 4, and some times even 1 colour with a gradient overlay can look nice.

When picking your colour its best to start with the middle tone. If you dont like it change it a bit with the Contrast or Hue and Saturation options till your satisfied. For the next tone you can make another layer above and set it to multiply and add the same colour overtop on an opacity of about 50%. This is good but if you want a more lively skin tone its best to do it by hand and choose a darker tone a with a bit more red or purple in it. If you want another darker tone apply the same principles but there should be less contrast so dont make the colours too different.

For the lightest tone you just want it to pop out a little and dot it onto the parts that stick out the most ( top of shoulders tip of nose, line the lips...etc)

Once your done and if it still doesnt look quite right remember you can still edit the saturation and hue, if the colours don't differ enough add contrast, if the colours are to bright bring down the saturation

Okay drawing feet? here are a few tips

Not as hard as hands but don't really get focuses on so its hard to learn to draw them >.<

First things first, break the foot up into shapes, ( seen on the top right in red). This will help you draw the foot in the angle or position you want it.

The whole foot doesn't touch the ground, there is a portion that doesn't. This part is on the side with the big toe.

The toes are similar to fingers, the big toe and the little toe and the one next to it curve toward the inner toes slightly, while the two next to the big toe or roughly straight.

With the ankle, the bone on the outer side is higher than the bone on the inner side of the ankle (check top left drawing )

Remember you can use your own feet as references. Just look at them or use a mirror.

This is my manga/anime style of drawing and obviously styles and proportions will differ from person to person. but if you find these tips helpful feel free to apply them to your own style.

drawing faces at an angle can be difficult, but there are a few tricks to make it easier.

Make a grid on you initial sketch like shown above, divide it up half way for the eyes, half way between the rest is the nose and half way between that and the rest of the chin lies the mouth, of course all faces aren't the same and you can change the bottom two a bit, but make sure the eyes are always half way.

Doing this isn't just good for proportion it also shows you where the eyes nose and mouth will go when you change the angle. Remember that they are not straight lines, they curve with the shape of the face.

Foreshortening is also very important when drawing the face leaning forward, backwards etc. Whats furthest away will appear more compact and closer together/smaller while things closer will be bigger and further apart.

From the profile the eyes generally start where the mouth ends and the eyes are where the bridge of the nose connect with the forehead. The ears are in line with the nose and eyes and the neck joins the jaw a little bit back from the eyes.

More anime eyes and tips

I've done an eye tip sheet already but there's still a few more things i need to cover.

Making to eyes look like they match or are inline on the face is one of the most difficult things to draw besides hands. The only way to do this is to practice and become consistent but i have a few tips to that will hopefully help.

I always draw both eyes at the same time. ( as seen in the above pictures) this helps with consistency and gets the sizes similar. They eye further away is has less width and looks more compressed than the closer eye. Also remember at that angle you can sometimes see the curve of the eye and/or the eyelashes.

Best way to tell if you eyes are in proportion is to flip the image, you will be able to tell right away what is out of place if you do this. If your drawing on paper, turn the page around and hold it up to a light, this creates the same effect as flipping the image. This can also be used to tell what else in the picture is/or inst in proportion.

A few tips on drawing Anime noses and how to do the shadow. ( in my style)

Noses can be difficult to shade if your not familiar with the shape. The shadow will be different according the the type of nose you are drawing. The noses i have drawn have a bridge that extents up all the way to between the eyes, and the shadow is done accordingly.

If there is less of a bridge there will be less of a shadow on the upper part of the nose.

The nostrils aren't always shadowed, especially if there is more than one light source or the light is coming directly from the side of the nose.

The shape is pretty straight forward, but the problems come when trying to draw it from different angles, once again i suggest a mirror or to look at some reference pictures, even if there from real life since its easy to convert itto manga

A little more in depth on the shading and how to draw the hair itself >.<

Tips. (this is how i do it)

Hair falls over the shape of the head and generally goes in the same direction, so a helpful tip is to draw the hair coming from a point. (check bottom pictures ) The point can depend on were the parting of the hair is, but it usually goes at the top of the head. You can use a separate one for the fringe.

Remember to apply gravity (for straight or more realistic hair). The hair will drape over the top of the head and where it comes off the back, it will hang.

Different hair types will act differently, In anime/manga alot of the hair seems to defy gravity, so to keep it looking like hair remember to still make it follow the contours of the head.

For the shading just use common sense, shade where the light hits the hair, and shadow where the hair lies against skin or underneath bangs, behind the neck ...etc. Best to look at real hair since it will show the shape of the head best >.<

Male and female hair are exactly the same, they just generally have different hair styles.

The title is suppose to say 'Cell shading anime hair and tips' but it was too long T.T!

For this one, you will need a general understanding of the layers, and layer features

Hair.. (This is how i do it)

Its really hard to explain how to draw it since there is not really any sort of step by step process >.<

You just need to place the hair around the head and make it fall in the right places. remember hair has different weights, thicknesses and acts different accordingly.

I will make another tip sheet with a bit more info on drawing the hair itself and drawing male hair as well but for now this will just cover colouring.

Colours! . You need to know how to pick them if you want a nice finish. Or at least how to edit them? Say for example if you pick a green for the base tone, make sure to change the colour slightly when you pick your darker tone, make it a bit more purple, and say for the highlight make it more yellow. This vary in tone will give the hair a bit more life and it will just simply look nicer and not so flat.

for the gradient effect, add a new layer over your hair and clip it on so the colour stays only on the hair itself, For PS its called a gradient mask. Brush on the desired colours, preferentially a darker for the bottom and lighter for the top. Set the layer to overlay and it should make a nice gradient effect. Remember if its to saturated bring down the layer opacity.

I always play a bit with contrast after Ive coloured my line art, it will just do that bit extra and make the image "pop".

Important note, when using the overlay or contrast features be very careful not to overdo it, since this is a easy way to ruin a nice picture >.
feel free to reference the colours but remember to experiment with picking your own ones too!

+Drawing hands and tips+

Drawing hands is arguable one of the hardest parts of the human anatomy to draw due to its complexity and wide range of movement.

Best way to learn is to reference, and theres no better reference than your own hands. Get a camera or a mirror and have a look at them from different angles. You need to understand the shape before you can start drawing them consistently.

Tips ( my way of drawing hands)

Fingers are generally the same length as the palm

The middle finger is the longest.(for most people). Individual finger lengths vary, though generally after the middle finger the ring finger is longer in males while the pointing finger is generally longer in females.

Best way to draw the hand is to divide it up into shapes, I have a few examples above on how I do this.

Some of these hands are quite realistic and anatomically correct but Ive designed them for anime use. The detail is just to show the shape. Its best to understand something and have a good amount of knowledge about it before simplifying and stylizing it.

Anime and Realism lips tips

My favorite part to draw , i love plump shiny lips regardless of gender.

If you like my style feel free to reference the mouths or colours ^^!

There really is no right or wrong style but there are a few guide lines when drawing lips. The upper lip generally juts out a little bit over the bottom lip and requires a highlight on the top part of the lip and the rest is shadowed and darker than the lower lip. The bottom lip needs a highlight on the center as this part stick out the most. The corners of the mouth also need a highlight on the bottom edge on the bottom lip. Lips come in many different shapes and colours. They also differ a bit between genders though men can still have plump full lips and women can still have thin lips. Though generally mens lips are thinner and longer while female lips of softer and fuller.

lips are also textured with tiny soft ridges instead of being completely smooth if your doing realism. This is because the lip stretches when the mouth is opened or when pulling certain expressions and needs a degree of elasticity.

Anime eyes and Tips

Now for Anime eye tips? ( these are merely my opinion and derived from my own experiences)

Your characters eyes can say a lot about them, whether you want them fierce or kind, mysterious or bold, eyes are a great way to show character and help portray personality.

I find evil/fierce eyes tend to be sharper and more elongated in shape, while kinder eyes are generally more curved with a flatter bottom and a more curved top. To create a more intense eye, giving the iris a dark out line and making the pupil very small tends to do the trick ^^!

Animes eyes are also extremely varied from semi realistic to chibi, and allow for a lot of creative flexibility. Just keep in mind the basics when drawing the eye. It is not flat, instead it is more of an oval/circular shape and when viewing from the side is is visibly curved with the cornea creating another curve on top of the globe. Also it is important to remember to give the eye lids thickness.

I recommend becoming more familiar with the anatomy of the eye, find some good photos or diagrams to see what is what, and what goes were.

I cannot seem to stress this enough, I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL, there is definitely room for improvement with my anatomy, but im just sharing a few tips on the way I myself draw.

This is the last one of these that Im making >.< (*off to make a proper tutorial*)

Theres a mini tutorial on the top right, its a bit vague but remember easiest way is to divide what you want to draw into shapes.

I drew a few more complex angles, just to show how the body changes and what the muscles do.

Drawing hands? apparently its the hardest thing to draw, and im gonna have to agree >.
