The interesting part is, I had drawn this illustration without even knowing of it's true nature. I sat down one day and began drawing I have always loved cards so I started with the idea of a jester holding a hand of cards showing them outwardly in a mocking manner. I showed my dad the illustration and he named it instantly as the "Dead Man's Hand". Astonished, I asked him if I'd somehow recreated a piece I was unaware of. He then proceeded to tell me the story of Wild Bill Hickok and the story of the infamous "Dead Man's Hand".

The story goes that Wild Bill was quite the gambler, and made enemies wherever he went. He beat a man named Jack McAll at poker one day, taking all the man's money. Bill gave him some money back and sent him packing. The next day while seated at a table at the same saloon playing poker, Jack who had been drinking, snuck up on the unaware Hickok and shot him in the head with a .45, killing him instantly. The hand he was holding was Aces and Eights, all Black. Superstitious men of the time deemed it the "Dead Man's Hand", and it's been called that ever since.

No one truly knows what the 5th card was. Some say it was the discarded card and he was about to draw. Others say it was the Jack of Diamonds, or The Queen, Others contend that it was a 9 of diamonds. Whatever the card, the hand is legendary, and they all agree Aces and Eights is the "Dead Man's Hand".

The following excerpt is from: legendsofamerica.com [link]

...
