The snow-sculpture is actually a couple of day's worth of effort, packing snow into a plastic tote and then carefully removing said snow into these elements. The shorter ones took two loads each, the taller ones were three, with two more making the lintel. Needless to say, I stripped the snow off of a major portion of my yard.

This was taken at night (obviously) with no flash, a couple of LED lights and there's a streetlamp behind the sculpture as well.

You can imagine it, though: The sculpted piece looks like the ivory-colored half above the purple mold in the top image.

What I did was make a mold of half a blade, poured the resin in the mold and allowed it to fully set. Then de-molded it, and poured the other half. Just before it finished setting, I added a small amount of resin on top of the half still in the mold, and then placed the other half on it, so I would get the effect of a two-piece mold from only one-half of the mold. I had to do it this way because I didn't get enough of the rubber, as the original idea was for the finished blade to only be the "half-size" shape.

Impulse-decisions while molding materials is probably not the best way to do it, but the end result worked better than I'd expected.

The middle shows the de-molded blade after both halves were joined, and the bottom shows the finished product after grinding/filing/sanding and painting (Lots of painting)

I raced to finish this (that impulse-decision thing once again) so that I could wear it to the Michigan Renaissance Festival on Sunday.

I liked the result enough that I'll probably make more of these. ]]>

I was watching the costume contest at the Michigan Renaissance Festival, and thought I was snapping a quick picture of the contestants all lined up in two lines hoping we the audience will pick them as the winner.

What I didn't realize until I was sifting through those photos was that the dog being held by the woman on the left was attempting to acquaint itself (if you will) with the griffin puppet on the shoulder of the woman on the right.
The timing was so lucky to get not only that wonderful moment, but look at the expressions on the people's faces, and I love how the host of the contest (behind everyone and to the right wearing a nifty hat) is facing that way and holding her hand up as if she's calling attention to that moment.

I couldn't have staged it any better, but I do wish my camera had been aimed directly at them so that we'd have a better quality photo, alas. ]]>

This is an oddly relaxing hobby, and if you are even remotely tempted to try it I highly recommend giving it a go, it's fun, and you'll be surprised at how meditative it can be. ]]>

The end result was pretty satisfying, and to my amazement is still standing this morning. These usually fall over after a few hours.

For the record, no glues or strings or photoshop-trickery, this is all just gravity and friction. The rock at the very top is about the size of one of those big bread-loafs that you can get from specialty-shops. ]]>

At any rate, this collage is made of pictures I took during the party. THe top row is of people having fun and enjoying the ball, all of them are wearing costumes they made. I think that's what I enjoyed the most, people putting their creativity to work and doing something fun. The two bottom left photos are of the official Krampus and "Lady Krampus" characters who hosted, the 2nd from the lower right is a picture of me in my costume taken by the AnnArbor.com photographer, and the lower right is the maker of the masks he's wearing, and the ones in the upper right corner. He runs the "Mad Tinker Workshop" in Wisconsin, and is a very fun and creative guy as well.

The staff is made of several stalks of the ornamental "Pampas grass" that's now spreading wild across Southeast Michigan. There are several ornaments on it that include feathers, maple seeds, horse hairs, leather, and wooden beads I made.

ChacXib-Chan is a former dragon warrior who's age combined with growing knowledge of the arcane has compelled him to retire as one of the elite king's guard, and now wanders the Manukest lands as a mage/alchemist/druidic oracle. Imagine something like a cross between a druid and a voudoun with a nice dosage of witch-doctor. While the Manukest respect his knowledge, he's a bit feared and not fully trusted by his people anymore. ]]>
