I... don't paint humans. I find the process brutally difficult, in fact. Working in my favor here were the beautifully clean lines and lighting of the original photograph, Shaun Tia's sharp makeup, and the absolute crispness of the composition. My painting is usually the exact opposite of crisp, but treating the process as a series of lines and washes, laying in by layer - I used to do a lot of silkscreen work, and that mentality was very useful here - made it workable, and fun.

I don't collaborate or create derivative works terribly often, and it requires a love of source material to bring me to the table. Here? Both photographer and model do outstanding work, and it's hugely worth the time to check out their art. I expect I'll return to Shaun Tia's work at least once more for something more difficult - and somewhat more gestural - in the future.

So I printed the photo at lowest ink use and painted over it somewhat, and then inverted it as is my wont. That result is over here: [link]

I was reasonably OK with that, but it didn't flow right, so I set that painting next to a proper large sheet of paper and painted mostly from memory, but glanced over at the paint-over a few times - mostly for where the limbs of the tree enter the frame, and for making sure the general angles were natural - when I paint trees, I tend more towards upwards reaching branches and swooshes, but nature didn't do that in this case.

Then the painting started suggesting things, as is normal for me, and I went with it, as is also normal. There was a hairdryer and a poodle involved, as well as an accidental wettening of my bamboo floor-mat which has the long-suffering artist-splatter one might expect from one so clumsy as myself.

And this bottom is the result. After more than 400 paintings, this is the fourth or fifth I've done from a reference, and I really like where the process led. You can see the final at: [link]
