The final artwork had to follow these specifications:
A 192x160 scene - This image is scaled up for the sake of clarity her on dA.
We could only use 16 colors, but we could pick whatever colors we wanted to use.
Only of those 8 colors could be used on sprites.
2 sprites (32x32) - The tank and the jet
2 effects (8x8) - Fire
1 environmental hazard (32x32) - The was hard because what is a hazard to Godzilla? The best option was to use the electrified wire and draw some towers for it to hang on. but even that isn't very hazardous because, in the movie, he walks right through it without getting hurt.

Other than that I was free to do what I wanted. I made sure to ask if it was OK to do a larger sprite, and the teacher said it was fine as long as the other size requirements were met. Godzilla and the towers are 96x96 pixels.

We were given a lot of time, but the rest of the course was so busy with other projects that there wasn't much choice but to put this off until the last minute. So I basically did this all in one night. It was fun though. I wish this was a real game. ]]>

The main reason why I wanted to do this was because I thought it would be cool to draw Robin with really long spiky hair in the front, like maybe he would punk himself up as part of changing from his everyday identity. From there I figured Batgirl with go a bit gothy with purple lipstick and elaborate eye makeup. Nightwing I just tried to make look as cool and sleek as possible. Batman himself, well, he's Batman. What more can be said?

I took their costumes and symbols mostly from memory and just made up the rest as I saw fit, trying to put some logic into my design choices based on who the characters are. I especially like Batgirl's "cute" bat-symbol. It's like the Hello Kitty of bat-symbols.

Was inspired to create some artwork after reading that a CG animated movie is on the way. Currently watching the original 1970's series all the way through. Was inspired to create some artwork after reading that a CG animated movie is on the way. Currently watching the original 1970's series all the way through. The people demanded it, and so with much thought and deliberation through taking suggestions from fans, I have finally delivered the ultimate team of villains who have united to oppose the Justice League of Anime. [link] This image is meant to act as a counter-point to my Anime Justice League Returns artwork [link] and is in some ways a mirror of that composition. Of course, this group is based on the concept seen in the Justice League tv series episode "Injustice for All" [link]

Please understand that everyone got a chance to suggest members of this gang, and I did use some suggestions. Ultimately it was up to me to pick which characters to use, and I have my reasons for making those choices. I don't mean to be rude, but I am not at all interested in what character other people think should have been used instead. Characters from historical or alternate universes were not eligible due to logistics. Sorry, Naraku and Orochimaru. So feel free to comment on this artwork but don't bother making any more suggestions. There is no point.

So, with that in mind let's introduce our villainous cast of characters. Don't worry if you don't recognize one, I've included links to more information, and you will hopefully see why I gave each character a spot on the Gang. We'll work our way upwards, starting front and center with what might be the most controversial of all the characters I selected.

ROCK HOLMES : [link] From the world of Osamu Tezuka comes this sociopath of a villain, who would no doubt be the mastermind behind forming a gang to take on the Justice League. Rock does not come from one story in particular, but is rather a reoccurring figure in many of Tezuka's works. Throughout the character's history, Rock was not always portrayed as a villain, but when he was, he was truly evil. If you don't understand why, just read this: [link] I see Rock as the perfect counterpoint to Lupin III. They visually match up well against each other and I am very intrigued by the prospect of a Heroic Thief vs Evil Detective match-up. I used Rock's design from the 2003 Astro Boy anime here, simply to create some color variety.

VICIOUS: [link] This Cowboy Bebop villain was suggested a few times and when it was brought up that he was a great swordsman, I thought he'd be perfect as a rival for Captain Harlock. With his hair, scowly face, and uniform, he really does look like an evil counterpoint to Harlock, so much so that I wonder if that was the intention all along.

DORONJO: [link] It was a regret of mine that I was not able to work any heroes from Tatsunoko Productions into the Anime Justice League, so I endeavored to fix that with the Injustice Gang. Who better than Doronjo, the villainess from Yatterman? To me, she is the perfect opponent for Cutie Honey. Doronjo is to sexy evil what Honey is to sexy justice! Don't you want to see them fight? Someone did suggest this character, but after I had already decided to use her.

HAKAIDER: [link] The Mechanical Violator from the Kikaider franchise appears here, based on his animated form. I brought him on board to oppose Astro Boy and Cyborg 009, and I have an interesting story in mind about how that would happen. I always figured I'd use Hakaider if I ever did an Injustice Gang. A brain behind a glass dome is just too cool of a visual to pass up.

TOGURO: [link] The younger of the Toguro brothers from Yu Yu Hakusho. This character came up often as a suggestion, and since I didn't really know who else to use, I just relented and gave the fans what they wanted. He's a demon and a fighter, so he should provide a good fight for the super-powered League members like Goku.

CELL: [link] Well, this should be self explanatory. Of course there is a Dragon Ball villain, and I picked Cell instead of Freeza because Cell just appealed to me more. The way I figure it, Cell and Hakaider were resurrected as experiments by the Black Ghost Organization. Rock knew about this, had the Gang break into an abandoned secret facility, and set them free to unite against the League. But are Cell and Hakaider really interested in fighting for Rock's goals?

RUBY MOON: [link] I thought a CLAMP villain would make a great opponent for Sailor Moon, and Ruby Moon from Card Captor Sakura fits the bill. She really looks like an evil counterpart to Sailor Moon and fits in well with the rest of the gang. Even the name Ruby Moon makes me wonder if she was in fact meant to be a villainous answer to Sailor Moon. Perhaps this is the destined battle!

Will the Injustice Gang succeed in their quest to defeat the Justice League and demoralize the world of Anime? Probably not, but it sure has been fun to think about! Hope you enjoyed it too! ]]> [link]

Apparently this was hanging up at The Labyrinth in Toronto [link] but I didn't get down there to see it.

The Iron Giant is one of my all time favorite movies. When the opportunity came along to do a piece of artwork to celebrate the film and have it showcased, I had to do something. Of course I left it to the last minute so it's not as good as it could be. Colors turned out more purple than I intended due to monitor calibration.

The idea here is to present the Iron Giant in his rightful place among the great robots of pop culture by having him meet Astro Boy. You just know that they would be great friends. I wanted to include Mazinger Z and Optimus Prime too, but ran out of time.

I guess it works well having Astro there since his own animated movie is likely to go down the same historical path as a low box office cult classic that the Iron Giant did.

Usagi Tsukino thought she had lived a fairly normal, boring life. She somehow managed to coast her way into college without ever really applying herself. Aside from all the typical high school drama regarding her boyfriend Mamoru, there was really nothing notable that she could remember from her teenage years. But the more she thought about it, the more this bothered her, because something seemed like it was missing. She asked some of other people she knew if they ever felt this way, but no one seemed to care. This bothered her too, and she had been noticing that just about everyone had become increasingly more complaisant. Just what had gotten into everybody? Was this it?

While walking home on a cloudy day, she happens upon a stray cat. She picks it up and starts playfully talking to it, only to find that the cat can talk back! As the cat speaks, Usagi is enveloped in a bright, starry background, while images of the past appear before her. It is no coincidence that Usagi found the cat, because the cat tells her that, years ago, she was a magical heroine called Sailor Moon, and that she and her friends saved the world from evil. When the battle was over, all of her memories were erased. Usagi was understandably skeptical, yet somehow, she felt a sense of familiarity. When a flash of magic transformed her into Sailor Moon again, she knew that it was all true.

The cat told her that Sailor Moon was needed once more, to bring love and justice to world after the spirit of humanity has been corrupted. Last time, she was joined by others, but now there was only enough power in the cosmos to restore Sailor Moon alone.

"You mean I've got to do all of this by myself?"

The cat replied "No, don't worry. I've made sure that you won't be on your own."

The cat hopped out of Usagi's hands, and the scene faded back into reality. Usagi looked up and saw the clouds parting, revealing the gigantic space ship Arcadia. ]]>

After defeating the Black Ghost organization, the team of 9 cyborgs disbanded and returned to their home countries. For awhile, all was peaceful, as far as everyone could tell. But Joe Shimamura saw that the world was changing, and not for the better. The other cyborgs kept in periodic contact with him, and they confirmed the same thing. The spirit of the people was declining, and the government was making bizarre, totalitarian decisions. The other cyborgs said they would investigate, but Joe never heard back from any of them. Something must have happened to them all, and whatever it was, he must be next!

Suddenly, he was attacked by two women. He evaded his assailants with his cyborg powers, but somehow they were prepared, as if they already knew all everything about him. They shot him with some kind of high-tech blasters. All seemed lost when two bullets shot from the shadows, and the attackers burnt like paper. Joe recognized his savior from the Wanted posters he'd been seeing ever since he started questioning the government.

"Zero Zero Nine." said Captain Harlock. "We are in need of your expertise."

"What do you need me for?" Joe asked defiantly.

Harlock told him that his attackers where the Mazone, the aliens responsible for the problems that he and the other cyborgs were so concerned about. "I have sympathy for them. They have no where else to go, and I take no pleasure in our struggle. But just as they are manipulating us, someone else is manipulating them."

Harlock walked over to the small pile of ash that remained of the attacking Mazone and used his foot to nudge one of their guns closer to Joe.

"Take a closer look." the space pirate said.

Joe took the pistol in his hand, and read the markings by the handle. He gasped. It was unmistakable.

While the android super hero Cutie Honey fights the security robots in the Ministry of Science, she continues to yell instructions to Lupin, who runs back and forth, plugging this into that, setting up something he's not too sure of, all the while dodging the flying severed robot parts knocked loose from the battle. When everything was set up, Honey seemed overwhelmed by the onslaught of robotic guards, but told Lupin to flip the large switch behind the tube. Lupin pulled and tugged on the switch until it finally budged. Then the lights went out.

In a blinding bust of light, the tube in the center of the room sparked, and began to pulsate with a powerful glow. Slowly, it opened up, and inside was the reawakened miracle of science, the Mighty Atom, Astro Boy.

As the Earth's government was being subtly influenced by the presence of aliens, the corrupting forces knew that Astro would question what is happening and oppose them. Astro would be seen by the people as a beacon of hope, and the aliens could not afford to allow that to happen. So robots with advanced artificial intelligence were completely outlawed, and Astro was shut down and locked away. But Cutie Honey, herself an AI Robot, used her shape changing power to act as a human to gain a position at the Ministry of Science so that she could, one day, right this injustice.

The lights came back on and Astro walked up to the guard robots to ask them why they were fighting. They stopped, standing there, confused for a brief moment by both the question and the robot asking it, until more arrived and the fight continued. Astro didn't want to fight, but he could tell that Honey was trying to help him, and these other robots would not listen to reason. Astro and Honey managed to fend many of them off, but more kept arriving at the scene. Astro used his laser to cut through some, which also melted a hole through the wall. The ever-so-crafty Lupin saw this as the way out, and so the three of them made their escape, with the robots being too big to fit through and follow.

When they were all safe, Lupin reached into his pocket, pulled out a communication device, and spoke into it.

"Mission complete, Cap'n. I made some new friends too. But somehow I think you already knew that." ]]>

Honey Kisaragi didn't really have much of a plan for her future when she was in school, but after the government placed a ban on all robots with human-like Artificial Intelligence, she committed herself to her studies, graduated from a high profile university, and got herself a job at the Ministry of Science in Metro City. She wanted to be in a place where, when the time was right, she could make a difference. On one of her late-night ventures using her employee security clearance to sneak in and hack into some classified information, this guy in the green coat shows up trying to break into a secret room. She had managed to discover just what the secret is in that's locked away in that room, and she happens to believe that this secret shouldn't be locked up at all. So, she manages to temporarily disable the security robot's operating systems and gives the would-be thief a hand. The time to make a difference has got to be now.

They enter the room. It's surrounded with dusty computers, and tangled cables, with a large metal tube in the center. Honey hurriedly instructs Lupin on what switches to flip and what cords to plug in while she feverishly types away on a computer. Lupin's not sure what he's doing but he goes with it for now. The security robots reboot themselves and go back on the hunt. Honey finishes what she was doing and stands in front to the entrance, waiting for the guards to come.

"What do you think you're doing!?" yelled Lupin.

"Inside that tube is something that can inspire and unite the entire world. I'm not letting them keep it in there anymore!" She exclaims.

"But those robots will tear you apart!"

She looks back with a cute smile and winks at him. "I'm changing now."

He didn't know all the details. That enigmatic Captain Harlock sure keeps a lot of secrets. All he was really told to do was to find a way in, locate a specific containment tube in some secret room, and then contact him and await further instruction. He knew it was dangerous, doing all this after the strictly imposed curfew, but he figured he was up to the task. He didn't know what was inside the tube or why it was so important. But, it didn't matter. He's Lupin III, the greatest thief in the history of the world, and he's got a reputation to maintain! Breaking into the Metro City Ministry of Science? No problem! Now that he's gotten this far, it should be just a simple matter of sliding down this vent, opening the door, and....

Huh... this screen says "Insert key card". He didn't have a key card, so he just figured he'd pick the lock. He jammed his tie clip into the slot, fidgeted around with it, and listened for that sweet click of success. Instead he was treated to the sounds of an awfully loud alarm and a squadron of security robots on his tail.

Never did get the hang of this computer stuff! Time to run.

Lupin tried to shake his pursuers without much success, sprinting from room to room, trying to find a place to hide, knocking over various electronic gizmos along the way, and generally making a mess of things. Just as he thought he was cornered, the robots suddenly malfunctioned. He breathed a sigh of relief, until a woman in a lab coat walked in. He saw her name tag and figured that she must work here, but if it's past the globally enforced curfew, than what's she doing here so late?

"Looking for this?" says the beautiful Miss H. Kisaragi while waving a key card back and forth. ]]>

He didn't want the glory, he just wanted everyone else to be happy. Yet, despite everything, it was as if the crowds had no real appreciation, no enthusiasm, and just didn't care anymore. One day, as I was watching DVDs of the awesome Justice League animated series, I wondered... what if?

What if there was a Justice League for anime characters?

And so, I sought to properly assemble a team and paint a piece of artwork based on the classic Justice League artwork by Bruce Timm and Warner Bros Animation seen here: [link] The characters poses, the lighting, the shadows, and the background were all meant to be the same as this original artwork.

My criteria for who from the world of anime would belong in a Justice League was that I wanted all of the members to be classic characters that all anime fans should know, not just new and popular characters, but rather legendary characters that deserved to be there. Wherever possible I wanted the anime characters to fill the same role as the Justice League member they are replacing one way or another, or at least for the different powers and personality archetypes that compose of the Justice League to be mostly represented in this version, even if they are rearranged. I also wanted a wide variety of colors, character designs, and original manga creators to be represented. Not everyone will agree with my choices, mostly because I used more classic characters instead of what is popular right now, but I think those who have a wide knowledge of both anime and comic books will agree that this is what a Justice League of anime should look like!

With that in mind, here is the line up! If you don't recognize any of these characters, don't worry. I'm providing links to information about who everyone is so you can learn about their origins. From left to right they are:

CAPTAIN HARLOCK : [link] Created by Leiji Matsumoto, he is one of the most classic and epic heroes in all of anime. He was actually the last member of the team I decided upon. I knew I needed someone who wore a cape since the pose J'onn J'onzz is in has him holding one. But after picking Harlock, I could see an entire storyline fall into place. Although he isn't an alien and has no actual powers, Harlock would serve the same central role in a Justice League as J'onn J'onzz does. CUTIE HONEY : [link] Created by Go Nagai, she is the original kick-ass anime girl! She definitely had to be the one to take Wonder Woman's spot. She also has a limited shape-changing ability, which sort of covers J'onn J'onzz's main power. The design comes from the "Cutie Honey Flash" series, because I liked the colors better, but the face comes from Hideki Anno's "Re: Cutie Honey". She is totally beautiful! Go Nagai is one of the all time greats, and so one of his characters had to be on the League.

GOKU : [link] From Dragon Ball Z, created by Akira Toriyama. Well, who else is going to stand in for Superman? They pretty much have the same origin anyway, and they're both strong goody-two-shoes, so it absolutely had to be Goku! Incidentally, he's the only member of the League who comes from a series that is not named after the main character

LUPIN III : [link] Created by Monkey Punch. Kind of odd to have a thief in the Justice League, but still, he's a classic character who deserves recognition. I don't think he's really a bad guy anyway, and under the right circumstances, he could be a real hero. I put him in Batman's spot since they both use their own ingenuity rather than powers, and he also has the smooth talking and wise cracking attitude of the Flash. He's skinnier than the typical American super hero, so it was hard to make the composition work since he takes up less space than Batman. I did the best I could while still staying true to my intent.

I just put him and 009 in these spots because the poses worked better this way. His youthful nature would add a lot to a team like this. One day, as I was watching DVDs of the awesome Justice League animated series, I wondered... what if?

What if there was a Justice League for anime characters?

And so, I sought to properly assemble a team and paint a piece of artwork based on the classic Justice League artwork by Bruce Timm and Warner Bros Animation seen here: [link] The characters poses, the lighting, the shadows, and the background were all meant to be the same as this original artwork.

My criteria for who from the world of anime would belong in a Justice League was that I wanted all of the members to be classic characters that all anime fans should know, not just new and popular characters, but rather legendary characters that deserved to be there. Wherever possible I wanted the anime characters to fill the same role as the Justice League member they are replacing one way or another, or at least for the different powers and personality archetypes that compose of the Justice League to be mostly represented in this version, even if they are rearranged. I also wanted a wide variety of colors, character designs, and original manga creators to be represented. Not everyone will agree with my choices, mostly because I used more classic characters instead of what is popular right now, but I think those who have a wide knowledge of both anime and comic books will agree that this is what a Justice League of anime should look like!

With that in mind, here is the line up! If you don't recognize any of these characters, don't worry. I'm providing links to information about who everyone is so you can learn about their origins. From left to right they are:

CAPTAIN HARLOCK : [link] Created by Leiji Matsumoto, he is one of the most classic and epic heroes in all of anime. He was actually the last member of the team I decided upon. I knew I needed someone who wore a cape since the pose J'onn J'onzz is in has him holding one. But after picking Harlock, I could see an entire storyline fall into place. Although he isn't an alien and has no actual powers, Harlock would serve the same central role in a Justice League as J'onn J'onzz does. The concept here is that Mario has taken Peach by the hand and pulled her out onto the field so he can finally show her all the trouble he has to go through to save the day. How a terrible creature like me ever came up with such a sweet idea, I do not know. I thought it would be fun, but circumstances made it harder than I thought it'd be. There are some flaws but I'm still happy with it.

Actually, there is a secret to this artwork. You see, I was actually commissioned to draw this picture for someone who wanted to give a gift to his friends, a couple of Nintendo fans who are getting married. I drew their faces on Mario and Peach's bodies. I started this artwork in April 2006. That's right, it took me a whole year to finish it! Of course, I did many other things in between all of that time. But one jackass thought I copied it. He was scared of me though. And rightly so, because I didn't copy it, and I didn't appreciate the insinuation!

From top to bottom we have Vector Prime, his trusty Minicon Safeguard, Lori, Sixspeed, Reverb, Coby, Bud, and of course, Jolt. Transformers artists hardly ever draw humans or Minicons, so I wanted to be different. It took a lot of reference material and screen shots to try to get the details and structure of the characters correct.

It was all painted in Photoshop. There is a pencil drawing underneath everything, but as I was painting I realized how bad that drawing was, so I ended up painting over the whole thing to correct it. The final product looks nothing like the drawing I originally did.

I did this painting because Transformers Cybertron/Galaxy Force is a great series with excellent toys and animation, and so even though there's a lot of excitement with the movie and classic Transformers, we should not forget this significant contribution to Transformers history. ]]>

I was working on this, thinking that it would be fun to draw Magenta in her witch costume again (first seen here [link]). I drew it up and it was looking good, scanned it into Photoshop and started painting, and was really happy, having a decent enough day for a change.

I was almost done when, for no reason at all, the computer I was using just decides to reset all of a sudden! Holy smokes! Well, no big deal, I thought. I had just saved, so I shouldn't really lose anything, right?

This was done a few months ago for some kind of book about creatures that may or may not be real. I have no idea if it is going to be published, but I'm tired of waiting and it's not like I got paid for this artwork anyway. Hopefully it will be published someday though.
