Isn't it great now that that racket is over and everyone can look back on it and laugh at what a ridiculous circus it was? Because I was trying to point that out while it was going on, and damned near got crucified by outraged mobs over it. Now everybody's going "Oh yeah, that was so dumb!"

Backstory: Steve has been a zombie for the longest time, but Karen and Paul's cat Pixel just drank mana and turned into magical flying Nyan cat for a while, during which time she found her way to Steve's house and scratched him. "Darlene" was a character I introduced to parody the kind of girl who wants to land a geek, so she parades herself around declaring herself to be a geek as well. Whether it's babbling in techno-jargon (hastily researched in five minutes in Wikipedia), posting photos of herself wearing a gaming T-shirt and holding a controller, or trolling sci-fi conventions, she's learned to attract her prey by imitating its call.

This is of course the same transparent bit practiced by women who want to lure a male of any demographic. Women who want a jock wear football jerseys and attend games, say. Groupies and hangers-on converge around any romanticized lifestyle.

But strangely, geeks seem most likely to fall for it. Perhaps there are so many woman-starved members of this set that they just can't read the signals. A female can post a couple lines of C-code on Digg and instantly get 20 marriage proposals in her inbox. In the geek lifestyle, the guys don't even seem to care if she's faking it; they're so blown away that anyone would bother to fake it that they'll lap up the attention anyway.

In the strip, Darlene eventually upgraded her aim and became a manager-clone instead, trading her hacker-emblem T-shirt for a power suit and her techno-babble for business buzzword-ese, going over Paul's head to date his boss. She'll be back later to make trouble for Paul.

One of the strips from my little parody of $Big_Box_Retailers and the experience of doing your tech shopping there.

Scott Adams of Dilbert fame often said that there was no scenario of workplace stupidity he could come up with that his readers didn't immediately write in to top. Similarly, I can't come up with any ridiculous scenario about dealing with salesdrones when buying computer components that tops the real-life experiences I've had.

Tell them I run Linux? I've gotten accused of being Communist and un-American. Ask for a Motherboard at CompUSA (back when it was still in business, hint hint)? Had the clerk react with shock and horror, as if I'd proposed that we do some gross sex act right there in the aisle - they didn't carry motherboards anymore. Ask if they have any CD burners? Had a manager ready to throw me out for being a "pirate". Fiddle with the floor display Windows boxes and pop open a DOS prompt just to see if Microsoft still ships QBasic? Got store security called on me for "hacking".

Not to mention the raving idiocy salesdrones try to pass off on me when trying to upsell me. While trying to buy various components, I've been told that it's useless to replace a powerbox because the PCs harddrive is corrupted now (so better buy a new computer!), that I need to ditch my broadband and get AOL because "it's easier to use", that my Linux needs the most expensive McAffee antivirus they sell because "Linux is made by hackers", my monitor is radiating me to death so I need to buy their top model to replace it, and that the modem I was trying to buy would "burn out too fast from using the Internet too much" unless I bought the most expensive one to "keep up with broadband speeds". _EVERY_ _SINGLE_ _TIME_ I shop for _ANYTHING_ computer-related at a large chain retail.

I could start a blog and just go computer-shopping every day and tell the story. It'd be the "stupid shit computer-department salesdrones have told me" blog. Since I have a million blogs to juggle already, will somebody please steal this idea or link me if it's been done already? ]]> Doomed to Obscurity.

I've amazed myself by making it this far. This is over two and a half years of posting every odd-numbered calendar day, without missing once. It was a challenge to myself that I have met. The whole thing has gotten far broader than the original core cast of nine I envisioned - I keep coming up with cool new ideas and characters to throw in.

I'm back from the dead! Was crazy sick last month, whole month of July, so that nuked my whole summer.

This strip is the continuation of The Big Uncontrollable Plot Kerblewie, towards the end of the story arc when I was winding it up as manically as I could. It helps, as you read in your head, if you mentally set the voice of the narration boxes to the guy who narrated the old Bullwinkle cartoons.

Around Christmas time 2010, Hulu.com made the entire Lost TV series available for free viewing for the holidays. I never watched Lost on its first run... (I know, I know) so I thought I'd check it out now that the series was over to see what I was missing.

I ended up watching the whole first season that week. Yeah, it's fun, but you have to understand that I'm a writer myself, and have also been a fan of surreal films and TV series (such as The Prisoner, Twin Peaks, and Carnivale) so I know how the formula goes. At the end of the series when the web was full of fans groaning about how cheated they felt that nothing had been explained, I even blogged about this in "I Knew How Lost Would End And I Never Watched The Show". That was in May of 2010.

Nevertheless, the series had enough influence on me to want to toss a shout-out into my next story arc. So "The Big Uncontrollable Plot Kerblewie" starts with a close-up of Sherry's eyeball opening, and the plot revolves around her lost laptop, so it fit to title this strip "Lost". ]]> Doomed to Obscurity.

In my freelance work, I sometimes get new bloggers fretting that their blog isn't getting enough subscribers. The solution they want is always to make the RSS icon bigger, make it a spinning GIF, make it pop up on a Javascript frame, and so on. Fortunately after their site indexes on the search engines and the blog finds its audience after a couple of weeks, their nerves start to settle. But it's always a tense couple of weeks... ]]>

So, I'm a freelance digital jack-of-all-trades, mainly writing. I've stumbled on having a knack for music writing - the legendary Lester Bangs is one of my idols - and began writing for a lot of music websites (Songfacts and Lyric Interpretations blog are two big ones).

I'd been meaning to bring some Goth and Alt-lifestyle culture into DTO anyway, because there's such a huge crossover with geeks. (For some reason, I have never met a Goth who would not also claim to be a geek.) And that led to the whole concert story arc.

Went all-out with the whole arc. New sets, detailed posters on the walls, eccentric cast of extras, and all kinds of geek-culture in-jokes. ]]> Doomed to Obscurity.

So Paul got a cat, the hard way. I like how the car turned out, just a nice, generic, believable car without calling attention to itself.

Real life writes the plot: I actually did get a cat at just this time which was abused. Our neighbor was throwing it out, literally "throwing" as in spiking her into the ground. We took her in (actually I opened the door and said 'what's a matter kitty?' and she ran in and hid under our daughter's bed.)

The cat is now our beloved house pet, but she has a mess of psychological scars left over from her abuse, which I pretty much gave the cartoon cat verbatim. Mainly, I wanted to have a realistic cartoon cat, as opposed to all the talking, walking, lasagna-eating cats in the comics.

Also, Paul's last line is actually from my son, who answers his phone this way when he knows I'm calling about something that he'd rather not discuss. ]]> Doomed to Obscurity.

"Cowboy coders" are a trope from way back - hotshots who think they're too good to use a debugger and have other symptoms of over-confidence. So Paul has been appointed "code cop" and Audrina is his sergeant-at-arms, making slapstick justice happen with the whiff of a riding crop.

Here's a good place to explain: Why do I put a dominitrix in my comic? Well, I wanted to be progressive. Gays in comics have been done to death. Also, as liberal as I am, I really can't think like a gay person and didn't want to inadvertently insult them. So I probed around for other alt. lifestyles and came up with BDSM. There's a huge crossover between the world of Master-and-slave roleplay, geeks, and other subcultures such as Goths and Ren-faire-fans.

Plus, I wanted to draw a woman in black leather. But Audrina only moonlights as a Domme - her real job is a mainframe admin. ]]> Doomed to Obscurity.

This strip was part of my reaction to the Oracle lawsuit of Google over the Android phone. James Gosling (father of Java) actually posted words to this effect in his blog. So I cast him as a court jester, and yes, the drawing is based off his photo and the costume is authentic. Those flying tomatoes in the last panel just finish the Vaudeville touch I was going for.

This one was my little parody of the rumor that was going around in the early days of the BP oil spill, that it was liberal saboteurs. Yeah, OK, so my militant left-wing Che-fan character cracks and confesses.

Graphic highlights: The real environmentalist flag flying over their training camp, saboteurs going down there with the "little geek" robo-sub from the Abyss, not much else. ]]> Doomed to Obscurity.

Having some Dilbert-flavored fun with the cult of SEO. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a superstition that will be very familiar to anybody working the web design field.

How many times have you had a client hysterically insisting that the meta tags have to contain miles of crap, the text has to have a keyword density of 2.972%, the project has to be completed one week before the next "Google dance," and so on? All of this snake oil is sold by SEO consultants, who are kind of like feng shui decorators for your website, helping arrange the HTML tags and CSS elements so that Google-Chi will flow freely to you.

It's bull. In the first place, search engines are supposed to find the most relevant, highest-quality result to your query. If they allowed themselves to be gamed by black magic tricks, people wouldn't use them any more. So the whole premise of SEO is a ridiculous fail in the first place.
