Often, when people think of architecture on the waterfront, it is the Renaissance Center in Detroit that crosses their minds. While those buildings have often been a subject of mine, I will only be shooting the architecture of our city for this assignment.

I don’t intend to to include the river in the shots; rather, I want the shots to be purely architectural and not scenic. I will, however include the sky in my shots in order to demonstrate the height of the buildings, or at least to give an illusion of height that will make the buildings seem all the more imposing.

The buildings I intend to shoot for this assignment will be the Art Gallery, the Hilton Hotel, the Ambassador Bridge, St. Clair College Centre for the Arts, an apartment building, Caesars, and the Chrysler Building. When I have taken my shots of each building, I will then choose the best four.

The kind of shots I intend to take will be linear, angular shots, so there may be a lot of windows and glass. I also want to show the impressiveness of the building, so I will be taking the shots from below rather than trying to fit the whole building in a very stationary picture. Another reason for taking the shots from below is that any window shots will clearly show the sky reflected on the glass. These type of shots are often very pleasing to the eye rather than showing windows with everything inside visible through them.

I would like to shoot on sunny days, however, if it should be cloudy and overcast for the next week, I am prepared to convert the photos to black and white and to then raise the contrast in photoshop.

Depending on the time of day, it may be difficult to take shots that neither blow out the sky, nor silhouette the building. What I intend to do in this case is to take two shots, one exposed for the sky, and one for the building. I will then merge the shots in photoshop to create an exposure blend photo.

Since it will be sunny days I intend to shoot in, I will turn my camera to its sunny setting, and then give it a light setting of minus two. If, however, all days in the next week turn out to be cloudy, I will turn my camera to its cloudy setting and give it a light setting of minus one. I only ever go higher than minus one in my camera if it refuses to focus otherwise. I feel that a light setting of higher than minus one tends to blow highlights out, even in cloudy or shaded shots.

I will not need a close-up or super close-up setting for these shots, so those settings will be turned off. A tripod will not be necessary since I will be shooting during the day. I do not think I will need to zoom in since I do want to get the perspective of the building from my view on the ground until it touches the sky.

Architecture has become one of my favourite things to shoot, and through my photos, I try to show people how I see the world. With the shots I will take for this assignment, I want to show people how impressive our city’s architecture on the riverfront is, even if one cannot see it from Detroit.

We had choose a master (by master, he just meant a photograph we really really liked) and try to emulate the photo by taking our own shot and, through whatever digital means necessary, make it as close to the original as possible.

There was a purpose to this, I assure you. The purpose was to get us to see what other photographers might do to get their shot the way it is. How did they get that reflection? Was it natural or did they put it on in photoshop? What kind of light did they use? Were there any colour enhancements? Etc., etc., etc.

So, I bought a peacock feather (twelve dollars!!! what the hell?!?) and used an eyedropper (and you know you've been in my program way too long when you start calling it an eyedropper tool lol) to put a water drop on it, which is a lot smaller than it looks here. I had to try a few times with that because it wouldn't go in the right place. I tried to shoot it at the correct angle and then I brought it into photoshop, blurred some parts to decrease the depth of field, did some hue changes on parts of the feather, added bokeh, and painted into some parts. I think I did pretty well, and so did my class, and so did my professor; I got an A!

I have seen a great many photos of such water drops that I have wanted to try myself. These photos will not be emulations, however; they will be entirely my own.
I will shoot water drops on a CD, a leaf, a raspberry, and a jewel. These will be staged photos, so I will be using an eyedropper to place the drops. I am aware that water does not always hold together very well, so I am prepared to use glycerin if I cannot complete my shots with water. My last attempt at shooting a water drop, however, was indeed successful and I did not have to use glycerin, so I will try these with water drops first.
These will be light shots, both reflected and transmitted in the water drops. Colour will be a large part of these photos as well. Water drops may either blend the colours of whatever they sit on in a very painterly way, or they may act as small magnifying glasses to show the details of what they sit on so clearly and crisply it is as though the drop is a shot within a shot. Either way will serve for me.
While these will be staged, I intend to bring my objects outside, or at least to have them by a window with the sunlight shining through, preferably at sunrise or sunset in order for the drops to catch the soft rosy light or the deep golden light rather than the hot bright light of midday. Since wind may be a problem outside, either blowing the water drops or my objects away, I may very well have to shoot all of these by the light of the window.
Since water drops are very small, I will be turning my camera to its super close-up setting. And the light setting will either be minus two or minus one. I will have to take several shots under each of these two light settings to see what works best. I will also have my camera on its sunny setting, and, since the shots will be taken at sunrise or sunset, I will give my camera a scene setting of sunset.
Again, it may be cloudy every day in the next two weeks and, if this is the case, I will use a lamp instead. I will turn my camera to its incandescent setting and use a tripod in order to keep the camera steady and I will the give the camera a light setting of minus two. The problem with inside settings is that they often take away from colour and I cannot use flash when in the super close-up setting. In this event, I will try crosslight either with another lamp or with whatever light is available from the window.
These photos will be largely experimental since it is not something I have done before the master emulation assignment for this course. I intend to learn along the way about staging shots, appropriate light settings, how useful windows are, and whether or not I can successfully shoot inside super close-up photos. Most of all, however, I intend to have fun doing one of the things I love to do best: photography.

PS. You can read my proposal below, but first:
Here are the rest in the photo essay:
<a super_img="http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/048/b/4/Dawn_Pond_by_Pentacle5.jpg" super_w="1024" super_h="759" super_catid="" href="http://Pentacle5.deviantart.com/art/Dawn-Pond-154547860?q=&qo=" title="Dawn Pond by *Pentacle5, Feb 18, 2010 in Photography > Animals, Plants & Nature > Waterscapes"><a super_img="http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/096/d/e/Dusk_Pond_by_Pentacle5.jpg" super_w="1024" super_h="768" super_catid="" href="http://Pentacle5.deviantart.com/art/Dusk-Pond-154580256?q=&qo=" title="Dusk Pond by *Pentacle5, Feb 18, 2010 in Photography > Animals, Plants & Nature > Waterscapes"><a super_img="http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/049/6/0/Night_Pond_by_Pentacle5.jpg" super_w="1024" super_h="743" super_catid="" href="http://Pentacle5.deviantart.com/art/Night-Pond-154585264?q=&qo=" title="Night Pond by *Pentacle5, Feb 18, 2010 in Photography > Animals, Plants & Nature > Waterscapes">

There's also a great photo right here which, for some unknown reason has absolutely no favourites aside from the one I just gave it! <a super_img="http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs30/i/2008/165/5/6/Reflection_by_janboi.jpg" super_w="900" super_h="600" super_catid="" href="http://janboi.deviantart.com/art/Reflection-88541925?q=&qo=" title="Reflection by ~janboi, Jun 13, 2008 in Photography > Animals, Plants & Nature > Waterscapes"> by So go check it out, please!

And check out the link system <a href="http://dALinkSystem.deviantart.com/art/dALinkSystem-User-s-Manual-143455558?q=&qo=" title="dALinkSystem User's Manual by #dALinkSystem, Nov 13, 2009 in deviantART Related > DA Tutorials">

For my third and final photo essay, I will be taking four shots of one scene: one at dawn, one at midday, one at sunset, and one at night. These shots will be taken at the main campus duck pond and they will be waterscapes.
In this assignment, I want to show how wonderful it is to live by the water at all times. I would do seasons, but that is not possible for the time constraints of this assignment, but that may be a personal project down the road.
A tripod will be absolutely necessary for this assignment since it would be impossible to get a clear night shot otherwise. For the morning and evening shots, I will have my camera on a scene setting of sunset. For the day shot, the scene setting will be landscape and for the night shot, the scene setting will be night scene.
I intend to mark the spot where I take the first shot in order to have each shot as close as possible, especially if I have to complete the essay over several days, with the only changes being what Nature provides.
Again, for the day shots, I intend to shoot sunny scenes so I will have my camera on its sunny setting and at minus two or minus one.
I cannot think that every day from now until the due date will be cloudy, but in that event, dawn and night will not be a problem since one cannot tell the difference with night and a cloudy day is sure to be preceded by a rosy dawn. For the day shot and the evening shot, however, I will have to be resourceful. For the day shot, I will give my camera a cloudy setting and I will then boost the contrast in photoshop to add interest. For the evening shot, I will wait for twilight, and I will then bring the photo into photoshop and give it a dark blue hue in order to give it a look of mystery. I have seen such shots and they work well.
Since I will not be shooting anything very small, my close-up setting and super close-up setting will be turned off. I do not know if I will need to use the zoom on my camera, but that is easily done.
I will not be using the flash on my camera since the fall off is too close and would create very dark photos.
I cannot know what the water will do in these shots. It may be still as glass and reflect everything like a mirror, it may be wavy and roiling, or it may be calm, but not still so that it would only reflect light and brokenly at that. I intend to make use of it either way. If it does something different in each shot, so much the better to show the joys of living by the water. If it is much the same for each, then it will bring ever more unity to the four photos.
The duck pond is a wonderful place to relax and to take photos. With mine, since my photos are to show others how I see the world, I hope to show people how magical it can be.
