I still tried to put it (him?) in an interesting situation. Not playing the scaryman, more on the candid side.
I hope I did it justice.

Récemment j'ai fait un échange avec *GreenEyedMonster88 : elle devrait dessiner quelque chose inspiré par une déviation de ma galerie, je devais dessiner son "personnage" Mothman.
Elle a dessiné une interprétation très personnelle de Prune et le monstre, c'est une très bonne version du thème.
J'ai pris comme référence Mothman (référence principale...), Do Birds Believe In God?, Mothman II and Your Teeth Belong To Me.
Je crains que mon dessin n'est pas aussi finement détaillé que ceux de *GreenEyedMonster88, mais j'ai aimé faire ce personnage. J'ai d'abord pensé m'en servir pour participer au mini concours anime/manga du mois précédent (Mothman en cuisinier aurait été intéressant...), mais j'étais trop en retard.

J'ai quand même essayé de le mettre dans une situation intéressante. Il ne joue pas les affreux, plutôt du côté candide.
J'espère lui avoir fait justice.

She drew her personal interpretation of Prune and the Monster, a very good take on the theme.
I took as reference Mothman (main reference...), Do Birds Believe In God?, Mothman II and Your Teeth Belong To Me.

I chose the computer generated animation way because I had no material time to do hand animation for this project.
Since I recently discovered the Processing "language" (actually a graphic layer/library/environment around the Java language), I chose to use it to do this.
I made a proof of concept sketch on paper, defining how I would build a fern: a trunk made of successive segments, two start of branches per trunk segment, branches made of successive segments too and two leaves per branch segment.
By varying the angles (relative to base and previous segment), widths, lengths and colors, I thought I could make quite varied kinds of ferns.
I had a bit of trouble building the base algorithms/structures (classes) but finally it is here.
Well, almost. I planned to make them evolve along a timeline, to animate them. Initially from very young state to fully grown.
I still haven't reached this part, so I thought I could at least show the static renderings I have, as kind of appetizer.
Since the deadline is in (less than?) two days, I might just do a translation (pan) with fixed ferns. Better than nothing, I suppose. But I will try to do better, anyway.

Note: as far as I know, currently deviantART has no category for computer generated 2D art, except for fractals. These ferns are not fractals (in the strict sense), so I have put them in a 3D category. Which is not incorrect: 2D drawings can be seen as 3D with a Z dimension (depth) always null...

I made no choice: I use all three stock images! By re-reading the rules, I realized that the first used photo was actually a landing... Bah, it works well also the way I used it.
I used for this page my character, Ania ji Gon, the Half dragon which I started to develop a bit more.
The scenario isn't a complex one, and the punchline is rather lame, but the story wasn't the main purpose of this contest entry...

It is far from perfect, the perspectives of the backgrounds are so-so, particularly in the last frame. And the middle frames are a bit empty: I planned to add speed lines, then I though it would be too much. What do you think?

Le but était d'utiliser quelques références faites pour ce concours pour faire une page de BD ou un dessin.
Je n'ai pas fait de choix : j'ai utilisé les trois images de référence ! En relisant les règles, j'ai réalisé que la première photo utilisée était en fait un atterrissage... Bah, it fonctionne pas mal comme ça aussi.
J'ai utilisé pour cette page mon personnage, Ania ji Gon, la demi-dragonne que j'ai commencé à développer un peu plus.
Le scénario n'est pas complexe, et la chute est assez bébette, mais l'histoire n'est pas le but principal de cette entrée de concours.

C'est loin d'être parfait, les perspectives des décors sont un peu bancales, particulièrement dans la dernière case. Et les cases du milieu sont assez vide : je pensais au début mettre des lignes de vitesse, mais j'ai pensé que cela ferait trop. Qu'en pensez-vous ?

After Christmas, I played a bit with the modeling clay my child had, named Patarêve (dream clay). It harden when drying, but remains supple and soft. Nice to manipulate.

I made a little Totoro magnet, and since my daughter got a comic about Emily the Strange, I copied this head (but it is a bit too narrow).

The size is roughly as shown here, around 5cm tall. They are flat... The head of Emily isn't as smooth as I wished to do.

Après Noël, j'ai joué un peu avec la pâte à modeler que mon fils a eu, nommée Patarêve. Elle durcit en séchant, mais reste souple et douce. Sympa à manipuler.

J'ai fait un petit magnet Totoro, et puisque ma fille a eu une BD sur Emily the Strange, j'ai copié sa tête (mais elle est un peu trop étroite).

La taille est à peu près comme montré ici, environ 5 cm de haut. Elles sont plates... La tête d'Emily n'est pas aussi lisse que j'aurai aimé faire.

To get away from the ugly standard tape covers, I used to cut out photos (flowers, etc.) in magazines.
For a change, I drew these covers, but never actually used them (or perhaps a copy of them?).
The first four are covers for albums by The Doors. The first two are (bad) visual puns, the other two are portraits of Jim Morrison.
The last cover is a mix of Jean-Michel Jarre's album sleeves, the Earth from Oxygène and the figures from Équinoxe.

Pour finir ma série de couvertures, je montre cinq jaquettes que j'ai fait pour des cassettes audio.
Vous savez, ces petits trucs que nous utilisions au siècle dernier pour enregistrer de la musique quand nous voulions l'entendre loin de nos disques (vinyles !). Avant l'ère du tout numérique...
J'ai enregistré plein de mes disques (et de mon frère) et plein de chansons à la radio aussi.
Pour me débarrasser des jaquettes standard affreuses, j'ai découpé des photos (style fleurs, etc.) dans des magazines.
Pour changer, j'ai dessiné ces couvertures, mais je ne les ai jamais utilisés (ou peut-être une photocopie ?).
Les quatre premières sont des jaquettes pour les albums des Doors. Les deux premières sont des (mauvais) jeux de mot visuels, les deux suivantes sont des portraits de Jim Morrison.
La dernière couverture est un mix des jaquettes des albums de Jean-Michel Jarre, la Terre d'Oxygène et les figures d'Équinoxe.

J'aime bien le look (coiffure) de ce personnage.
J'aime aussi les montures style reptilien, j'ai donc pris cette opportunité.
Le décor rocheux semble étrange, il a probablement été taillé par des ouvriers ou de la magie...

This cover is special... I wanted to celebrate the tenth issue with a surprise work. So I made a simple drawing close of line art, with a theme allowing to leave lot of white...
Then I duplicated as usual (xeroxed on Bristol paper), at 33 copies.
And I took my watercolors and started to paint all the covers by hand! Color copies were expensive at the time...

Cette couverture est spéciale... Je voulais célébrer le dixième numéro avec une surprise. J'ai donc fait un dessin simple proche du dessin au trait, avec un thème permettant de laisser beaucoup de blanc...
Puis je l'ai dupliqué comme d'habitude (photocopie sur bristol), à 33 exemplaires.
Et j'ai pris mes aquarelles et j'ai commencé à peintre toutes les couvertures à la main! ! Les photocopies couleur étaient coûteuses à l'époque...

I used Ursula, the heroin of Kiki's Delivery Service, the marvelous movie of Hayao Miyazaki, as guess star of this cover. I though her spunky character was fitting for the scene! And since she is a painter...
That's all, it is mostly a play on typography and texture effects.

This is the first cover I made for the Animapa, numbered 0 because few people participated to it, and there was, necessarily, no feedback on the previous issue...
I am quite proud of this one, made with little or no reference, and coming out quite well, despite some flaws.

The big disk isn't a vinyl audio disk, but a LD, video Laser Disk, of the size of vinyls, but much heavier. They were made of glass and plastic, readable on both faces: you had to turn them in the middle of the movie, if you haven't a reader with double head or with a turnable head.
These ancestors of DVD had analog image (of high quality) able (for some editions) to stop and step on images, and digital sound (CD quality). It was top-notch at the time, and movies in this format in Japan were cheaper than video tapes! I have some 60 of them, but alas the dual system (NTSC/Pal) reader is broken, I don't know if I can make it repaired.
I have bought, for example, all the Miyazaki movies in this format (around $100 each!). Now I have them in DVD, but I have some rare movies which I don't know if they are available in DVD now.

Well, the background of the cover was inspired by my own passions: a bronze statuette I have, a rank of video tapes (I recorded lot of anime stuff on TV at the time, it is now re-edited in DVD), of manga (only Japanese at the time, no French translations, English translations only in comic format) and of LDs.
The girl in kimono is quite nice, if I can say so, but the head is really oversized... The girl on the LD cover is, if I recall correctly, the eponymous heroin of Yawara, the judo manga of Naoki Urasawa. That's why I put the deviation in Fan Art.
The perspective of circles (disk, disk holder) seems a bit odd.

And I wanted to depart from the "mass", by remixing the meme to my own layout: I see myself mostly as a comic artist, so I used a comic layout with frames and narrative order.
I like this funny and witty meme, that's the reason why I did it, and why, despite my dislike for chain-letters and tags, I will tag artists I appreciate which have an original style. They are free to ignore me, of course, but I would enjoy seeing the meme done by them.

I don't mind coming late, I don't search to follow trends, even if I don't necessarily avoid them — hey, I didn't omitted to read Harry Potter because it was popular, or to hear The White Stripes because they have success, and I enjoy them because they are good!
And I wanted to depart from the "mass", by remixing the meme to my own layout: I see myself mostly as a comic artist, so I used a comic layout with frames and narrative order.

For the girl, I tried to make something cozy and feminine... The posters on the wall are taken from two anime TV series I watched at the time: Creamy Mami, and Hikari no Densetsu.
For the boy, I made him a bookworm and computer user (quite rare at the time), although the hardware is badly dated (floppy disk slot, impact printer...). The wall poster is a sketch of movie poster I have, of Dark Crystal, but I never finished it (it is quite complex).
Nothing fancy in there, but I thought it might be refreshing to show some scenery instead of the usual nice girls...

Une autre paire de vieux dessins. Je les ai groupés parce qu'ils sont fortement liés. J'ai conçu ici les chambres à coucher de Béryl de Vilys (celle du dessus) et de Cyril de Vilys (celle du dessous), en tant que référence pour des BD (jamais utilisé encore).
Pour la fille, j'ai essayé de faire quelque chose de confortable et féminin... Les posters au mur sont tirés de deux séries TV japonaises que je regardais à l'é

oque : Creamy Mami (Creamy, merveilleuse Creamy), et Hikari no Densetsu (Cynthia ou le rythme de la vie).
Pour le garçon, j'ai fait de lui un rat de bibliothèque et un utilisateur d'ordinateur (assez rare à l'é

oque !), mais le matériel est assez daté (lecteur de disquettes, imprimante à impact...). Le poster au mur est un dessin d'un poster de film que j'ai, de Dark Crystal, mais je ne l'ai jamais fini (il est assez complexe).
Rien de très séduisant ici, mais j'ai pensé qu'il pourrait être rafraîchissant de montrer quelque décor plutôt que les habituelles jolies filles...

Like those I put on the mantel of the fireplace. On the left, I have put a small gong (forged iron and copper), on the middle a big tray, both chiseled. I never learned to forge but I have notions on chiseling...
The big iron andirons topped with a copper "acorn" is inspired by work of my father too.
The Celtic knot on the back iron plate is just a wink to *TheKnotters club, I made the knot without reference.
The fireplace itself took inspiration in the one at the old house of my grand-parents: it is big enough that you can sit beside the fire.
Unlike what come to mind when we evoke fireplaces, and thus despite my initial idea, I chose to draw a dying fire: not only big flames would have messed with the knot pattern, but seriously, you can't sit beside a roaring fire, the heat is too much. Even less quietly sleep there...
I had the chance to see (and make) numerous fires in fireplaces, spending lot of time contemplating them. Thus, I hope this drawing is a little less abstract that lot of fireplace drawings I saw on dA, where authors probably saw these only in comics or movies... That doesn't prevent them to be nice and imaginative!
Yet my drawing is full of mistakes: the perspective is odd, not constructed rigorously (a bit more for the tiling, though). The shadows are not always consistent. The characters (and cat) are clumsy, as always. But hey, I hope the love and soul I have put in this drawing show up.

I made this drawing for the MAORC: Manga/Anime Official Repeating (mini-) contest, the official monthly contest organized by the Manga/Anime Gallery Director. This month's theme is "fireplace", as you might have guessed... Excellent choice of theme, and right in season. Unlike last month, I submitted in time, although dangerously close of the dead line: I like to take my time to do drawings, letting the initial pencil work some days, as it often allows to spot mistakes. I usually ink over the pencil, then erase it, but this time it would have been messy, so I digged up my old hand-made light box from my garage and put it back in service to ink on a nice sheet of Bristol paper. Yes, that's so XX^th century...

The sleeping child is Prune, which you can find in various drawings of my gallery (grouped in a folder too). I feel that I am starting to get back my drawing and inking skill, a bit rusty by years of hiatus. So I might finish a page waiting for years to complete a small story with Prune. And so, be able to finally show this comic! Yay!

Ne riez pas du chat, je l'ai fait sans référence ! Comme le reste du dessin, de toute façon. J'ai puisé dans mes souvenirs pour le dessiner.
Mon père, son père et son grand-père étaient dinandiers, artisans travaillant des feuilles de cuivre et des barres de fer pour faire des objets, depuis les grands chaudrons des origines jusqu'aux casseroles (que j'ai mises à gauche) et aux objets plus décoratifs. Comme ceux que j'ai posé sur le manteau de la cheminée. À gauche, j'ai mis un petit gong (fer forgé et cuivre), au milieu un grand plateau, les deux ciselés et repoussés. Je n'ai jamais appris à forger, mais j'ai des notions de ciselage...
Les grands chenets en fer surmontés d'un gland en cuivre sont inspirés de ceux que faisait mon père, aussi.
Le nœud celtique sur la plaque de fonte du fond est juste un clic d'œil au club *TheKnotters, j'ai fait le nœud sans référence.
Le cheminée elle-même s'inspire de celle qu'il y a dans la vieille maison de mes grand-parents : elle est assez grande pour qu'on s'assoit à côté du feu.
Contrairement à ce qui vient à l'esprit quand on parle de cheminée, et donc en dé

it de mon idée initiale, j'ai choisi de dessiner un feu mourrant : non seulement de grandes flammes auraient ruiné le motif celtique, mais sérieusement, vous ne pouvez pas vous assoir à côté d'un feu rugissant, la chaleur est insupportable. Encore moins vous endormir tranquillement là...
J'ai eu la chance de voir (et faire) de nombreux feux dans des cheminées, passant pas mal de temps à les contempler. Ainsi, j'espère qie ce dessin est un peu moins abtrait que de nombreux dessins de cheminées que j'ai vu sur dA, où les auteurs ne les ont probablement vu que dans des comics ou des films... Ce qui ne les empèche pas d'être bien faits et imaginatifs !
Néanmoins, mon dessin est plein d'erreurs : la perspective est bizarre, pas construite rigoureusement (sauf pour le carrelage, quand même). Les ombres ne sont pas toujours cohérentes. Les personnages (et le chat) sont maladroits, comme toujours. Mais bon, j'espère que l'amour et l'âme que j'ai mis dans ce dessin se voient.

J'ai fait ce dessin pour le MAORC: Manga/Anime Official Repeating (mini-) contest, le concours mensuel officiel organisé par le directeur de galerie de la section Manga/Anime. Le thème de ce mois est « cheminée », comme vous pouvez le deviner... Excellent choix de thème, pile dans la saison. Contrairement au mois précédent, j'ai posté à temps, bien que dangereusement près de la date limite : j'aime prendre mon temps pour faire mes dessins, laissant mon crayonné initial quelques jours, parce que cela permet souvent de repérer des erreurs. D'habitude, j'encre par dessus le crayonné, puis je l'efface, mais cette fois cela n'aurait pas été propre, alors j'ai resssorti ma vieille boîte à lumière faite main de mon garage et je l'ai remise en service pour encrer sur une belle feuille de Bristol. Oui, c'est tellement « XX^e siècle »...

L'enfant endormi est Prune, que vous pouvez voir dans divers dessins de ma galerie (groupés dans un dossier aussi). Je sens que je commence à retrouver mon niveau de dessin et encrage, un peu rouillés par des années de non-pratique. Je vais donc peut-être pouvoir finir une page qui attend depuis des années pour compléter une petite histoire avec Prune. Et ainsi, être en mesure de montrer enfin cette BD, youpi !

Format: A4 (21 x 29.7 cm) ]]> My father, his father and his grand-father where "dinandiers", artisans working on copper sheets and iron bars to make objects, from the initial big cauldrons to pans (which I put on the left) to more decorative items. Like those I put on the mantel of the fireplace. On the left, I have put a small gong (forged iron and copper), on the middle a big tray, both chiseled. I never learned to forge but I have notions on chiseling...
The big iron andirons topped with a copper "acorn" is inspired by work of my father too.
The Celtic knot on the back iron plate is just a wink to *TheKnotters club, I made the knot without reference.
The fireplace itself took inspiration in the one at the old house of my grand-parents: it is big enough that you can sit beside the fire.
Unlike what come to mind when we evoke fireplaces, and thus despite my initial idea, I chose to draw a dying fire: not only big flames would have messed with the knot pattern, but seriously, you can't sit beside a roaring fire, the heat is too much. Even less quietly sleep there...
I had the chance to see (and make) numerous fires in fireplaces, spending lot of time contemplating them. Thus, I hope this drawing is a little less abstract that lot of fireplace drawings I saw on dA, where authors probably saw these only in comics or movies... That doesn't prevent them to be nice and imaginative!
Yet my drawing is full of mistakes: the perspective is odd, not constructed rigorously (a bit more for the tiling, though). The shadows are not always consistent. The characters (and cat) are clumsy, as always. But hey, I hope the love and soul I have put in this drawing show up.

started a contest some time ago: the goal was to draw one of my characters and one of her, interacting, and with living entities in their hair.
I chose Pip as character, although I made her hair more like the character in 5000 Thanks, better suited for the theme. And I naturally thought of Prune and her little friends to fit the theme.
I made a WIP in my scraps, if you like this kind of stuff.
I just finished this less than hour ago...

a lancé un concours il y a quelque temps de cela : le but était de dessiner un de mes personnages et un des siens, en interaction, et avec des entités vivantes dans leurs cheveux. J'ai choisi Pip comme personnage, bien que j'ai fait ses cheveu plus comme le personnage de 5000 Thanks, mieux adapté au thème. Et naturellement j'ai pensé à Prune et ses petits amis pour coller au thème.
J'ai fait un travail en cours dans mes scraps, si vous aimez ce genre de chose.

(JFaK) is currently bashing deviants gaining popularity by making fan art!
But I appreciate the irony of the situation... And since I just found time this week for finish the page I sketched some months ago in my Mysterious WIP, I might as well upload it.

To be totally honest, all I wrote is true: when I discovered JFaK, and saw he put links to fan art of his strip in his Artist's Comments, the thought of boosting my pageview counter by making a fan art too has crossed my mind...
Now, I wouldn't do this for everybody: I truly admire Daniel's art and humor. As odd at it seems (but see my gallery...), I really like cute characters and grotesque drawings, plays with comic conventions and black, cynical humor, and so on. I believe in eclecticism. My fan art section is very small (and will remain this way!) and quite atypical...

As usual, I had hard time finding a good idea for a strip. For this one, I realized playing with the ambiguity above would be funny. Cynical and violent, yet cute. How true to the original strip is it?

I also had the idea to introduce a new character, in the spirit of the other animals. There is no dog (yet), and I wanted to make one like Tex Avery's Droopy. I stylized it a bit more to make it blend in the strip...
I initially stopped at the penultimate panel, but then I had the idea of the current ending and thought it added a funny twist...

I might not get my link and (illusory) popularity, but actually I don't care much now. I had fun making it, and if it makes Daniel (and some other people) smile, I have reached my goal!

Note: Search no special meaning to the title, it is just a play on words, mostly for the rhyme.

[EDIT] I don't believe it, during the few seconds my deviation lasted on the first browse page, I got 2 faves! JFaK is really popular!

Lol! C'est probablement un très mauvais timing, du fait que *justflyakite

(JFaK) mène en ce moment une guerre contre les déviants qui ont gagné de la popularité en faisant du fan art !
Mais j'apprécie l'ironie de la situation... Et puisque je viens juste de trouver le temps cette semaine pour finir la page que j'ai esquissée il y a quelques mois de cela dans mon Mysterious WIP, je peux aussi bien le mettre sur dA.

Pour être totalement honnête, tout ce que j'ai écrit est vrai : quand j'ai découvert JFaK, et que j'ai vu qu'il mettait des liens vers les fan art de ses strips dans ses commentaires de déviations, la pensée de booster mes pageviews en faisant un fan art moi aussi a traversé mon esprit...
Maintenant, je ne ferais pas ça pour n'importe qui : j'admire réellement l'art et l'humour de Daniel. Aussi bizarre que cela puisse paraître (mais voir ma galerie...), j'aime réellement les personnages mignons et les dessins grotesques, les jeux avec les conventions de BD et l'humour noir, voire cynique, etc. Je crois en l'éclectisme. Ma section de fan art est petite (et le restera !) et assez atypique...

Comme d'habitude, j'ai eu du mal à trouver une bonne idée de strip. Pour celui-ci, j'ai réalisé que jouer avec l'ambiguïté ci-dessus pourrait être amusant. Cynique et violent, mais mignon. C'est pas fidèle au strip originel, ça ?

J'ai aussi eu l'idée d'introduire un nouveau personnage, dans l'esprit des autres animaux. Il n'y a pas de chien (pas encore), et j'ai voulu en faire un comme le Droopy de Tex Avery. Je l'ai stylisé un peu plus pour qu'il se fonde dans le strip...
J'ai d'abord arrêté à l'avant-dernière case, mais j'ai eu l'idée de la fin actuelle et j'ai pensé que cela faisait un retournement amusant...

Je n'aurai sans doute pas mon lien et ma popularité (illusoire), mais en fait je m'en fiche un peu maintenant. Je me suis amusé en le faisant, et si cela fait sourire Daniel (et quelques autres personnes), j'aurai atteint mon objectif !

Then I scanned my artist's signature at the bottom of one of my drawings, and cleaned it up a bit. And I vectorized it with potrace, which created a SVG file.
At the time, I was jobless and I spent quite some time to study SVG, an XML dialect describing vector graphics. Quite fun for a geek like me...
Anyway, I wrote a small SVG file layering the splash image, binary data (Ascii translation of the address of my site and of my main e-mail address...) and my signature.
I put also there a scaled down version (with bigger digits so they are still identifiable) and a banner version.
I have yet to use than in my site. I also made nice navigation buttons this way...

Avec un peu de gouache, j'ai fait plusieurs "taches" de peinture diluée sur papier. J'ai scanné celle qui paraissait la plus intéressante.
Puis j'ai scanné ma signature d'artiste au bas d'un de mes dessins, et l'ait nettoyé un peu. Puis je l'ai vectorisé avec potrace, qui a créé un fichier SVG.

oque, j'étais sans boulot et j'ai passé pas mal de temps à étudier SVG, un dialecte de XML pour décrire des graphiques vectoriels. Assez amusant pour un geek comme moi...
Quoiqu'il en soit, j'ai écrit un petit fichier SVG accumulant l'étalement de peinture, des données binaires (traduction Ascii de l'adresse de mon site et de ma principale adresse e-mail...) et ma signature.
J'ai aussi mis là une version réduite (avec des chiffres plus gros pour qu'ils soient toujours identifiables) et une version en bannière.
Je ne l'ai toujours pas utilisé sur mon site. J'ai aussi fait de jolis boutons de navigation comme ça...

Je le mettrai dans les scraps une fois le dessin final fait, mais je le poste ici pour avoir à l'avance des critiques sur l'anatomie, l'angle, la densité du nuage d'insectes, etc.

I made a first version quite hastily, to meet the deadline, inking it in less than hour. I added a bit more work on it, hence the new submission (2007-11-03).

Oh. Donc, j'ai essayé d'en faire un, sans référence... Puis j'ai ajouté un poisson. Et une grenouille (naïve), sur son nénuphar. Et une libellule et un de ces insectes marchant sur l'eau.
Et j'ai pensé que je devrais rendre le dessin un peu plus intéressant. Alors j'ai ajouté une sorte de robot/extraterrestre en armure (pensant vaguement à Predator), puis un autre alien...

It was done with ordinary ball pen on ruled paper. I found a way to get rid of the paper lines... ^_^'
Yet another attempt at drawing chibi, this one isn't bad, isn't it? Perhaps I should have made the hand more simplified. It looks strange with regard to the oversized head...

[UPDATE 2007-10-19] I redrew the hands, they should be correct now, and I improved a little the shading. So I take it out of scraps now.

J'ai fini ce dessin il y a deux jours, c'est un effet de bord de deux réunions d'équipe intéressantes au boulot...
Ce n'est même pas ironique : dessiner ne bouche pas mes oreilles, et je suis parmi ceux qui participent le plus activement à ces réunions !

C'est fait avec un stylo-bille ordinaire sur papier ligné. J'ai trouvé un moyen de me débarrasser des lignes du papier... ^_^'
Une autre tentative pour dessiner un chibi, celui-ci n'est pas si mal, n'est-ce pas ? J'aurai peut-être dû schématiser plus la main. Elle fait un peu bizarre par rapport à la taille surdimensionnée de la tête...

This month (September), the challenge was to add some color to an ink work.
As I often said, I am not a great colorist. But, I picked some gel ink pens on the desk of my wife, to make a colorful deviation...
I started by some random doodles with my Pentel pocket brush, in a pattern I already done, for example in the hair of my Ecstatic girl...
I planned to fill the whole page, but I was bored, and I found it started to have an interesting shape. So I worked a bit more in a less random way, and I got a kind of alien...
Then I took 7 pens, and colored the figure, still quite some randomly, except I applied the theorem (it has been demonstrated now) of seven colors: whatever the complexity of a map, you ever need only 7 colors to fill it without having ever two adjacent countries of same color.
I finished with some semi-random background, structuring it later with black ink.
Interesting, isn't it?

Une autre déviation pour le concours mensuel du club ~Inkslingers. Ce mois-ci (septembre), le challenge était d'ajouter un peu de couleur à un travail à l'encre.
Comme je le dis souvent, je ne suis pas un grand coloriste. Mais j'ai piqué quelques stylos à encre gel sur le bureau de ma femme, pour faire une déviation bien colorée...
J'ai commencé par quelques traits aléatoires avec mon pinceau de poche Pentel, selon un motif que j'ai déjà fait, par exemple dans les cheveux de mon Ecstatic girl...
J'avais prévu de remplir toute la page, mais je me suis lassé, et j'ai trouvé que ça commençait à avoir une forme intéressante. Alors je l'ai travaillé un peu plus de façon moins aléatoire, et j'ai eu une sorte d'extra-terrestre...
Puis j'ai pris 7 stylos et j'ai colorié le dessin, toujours de façon assez aléatoire, excepté que j'ai appliqué le théorème (il a été démontré maintenant) des sept couleurs: quelle que soit la complexité d'une carte, vous n'avez jamais besoin de plus de 7 couleurs pour la remplir sans jamais avoir deux pays adjacents de même couleur.
J'ai fini par un fond semi-aléatoire, structuré plus tard avec de l'encre noire.
Intéressant, non ?

On holidays, on the shore of a Landes lake (South-West of France), I found some seagull feathers (they love to pick leftovers of people). I tried to cut them, without success: I forgot to split the end. So I used the other tip, first making big black areas, then trying some lines.
The result is here. It probably won't win an artist prize, but perhaps an originality one... Unless somebody else has some other crazy idea!

Comme je fais presque tout mon encrage avec des pinceaux, aidé parfois de plumes tubulaires (style Rotring), un choix évident aurait été d'utiliser une classique plume métallique. Excepté que je n'aime pas trop ça, donc j'avais pas ça à la maison.

J'ai essayé de les couper, sans succès : j'ai oublié de fendre le bout. Alors j'ai utilisé l'autre extrémité, commençant par faire de grandes zones noires, puis essayant quelques lignes.
Le résultat est là. Il ne gagnera sans doute pas un prix artistique, mais peut-être un prix d'originalité... À moins que quelqu'un d'autre ait une autre idée folle !

! Mostly for the fun of it, I liked the idea to draw a vampire based on myself. Plus it will add some variety in the vampire bunch!
Sooo, I made this one. Well, the body (almost wrote "corpse", from French "corps", but funny lapse) is almost SD, even more as the head is too big!
That makes a kind of midget vampire... Well, I am not tall, but not that small either! Whatever... That's not me, but a character based on me: we share a massive body, and the head isn't far from mine...
The cape has quite a strange form too, but I will call that artistic license...
I did the drawing by penciling first, then inking with my Pentel pocket brush. I should dig out my true brushes, this one is handy but gives quite thick lines, making rough drawings.
Fooray wants a color scheme. Not much to say, I would make the face white, of course, the eyes pale blue like mine, the lips pink to red, the hair brown to black. The outfit would be dark blue, almost black. Black boots.
Personality? I would say quiet, almost cold, laconic. He likes to eat plums even if that won't nourish him...

[EDIT] I didn't pass a turn as competition was really of high level, but it was interesting anyway.

J'ai fait hier un vampire pour le petit concours initié par *Fooray

! Essentiellement pour m'amuser, j'ai aimé l'idée de dessiner un vampire basée sur moi-même. De plus, cela va ajouter de la variété au groupe de vampires!
Dooonc, j'ai fait celui-ci. Bon, le corps est presque un SD, d'autant plus que la tête est trop grosse !
Ça fait une sorte de vampire nain... Bon, je ne suis pas grand, mais aussi petit non plus ! Qu'importe... Ce n'est pas moi, mais un personnage basé sur moi-même : nous partageons un corps massif, et la tête n'est pas éloignée de la mienne...
La cape a une forme assez étrange aussi, mais je vais appeler ça licence artistique...
J'ai fait le dessin en commençant par un crayonné, puis en l'encrant avec mon pinceau de poche Pentel. Je devrais déterrer mes vrais pinceaux, celui-ci est pratique, mais il fait des lignes é

aisses, faisant des dessins assez rustiques.
Fooray veut une charte de couleurs. Pas grand chose à dire, je ferais le visage blanc, bien sûr, les yeux bleu pâle comme les miens, les lèvres roses à rouge, les cheveux bruns à noir. La tenue serait bleue nuit, presque noire. Bottes noires.
Personnalité ? Je dirais tranquille, presque froid, laconique. Il aime manger des prunes, même si cela ne le nourrit pas...

This is my first OCBC (Original Character Battle Contest) entry I make!
This one has been initiated by *SeaLover456

, in OC BATTLE CONTEST!. I am in the List Two (#78) and for this first round, I am opposed to ~Kadarami

, Dominique Erawaza is against his character: Kereyan which can become a Griffin at night.
I wanted to make a battle on the light (funny) side, but it is easier to mock a big bad warrior than a young, seemingly feeble character... So I made a rather classical fight, trying to use as much as I could of the long story ~Kadarami provided.
I had to make some stretches on his story, like Serena being able to summon creatures, directly or indirectly, or even training Kereyan. Hey, I had to find a way to make these characters to meet, knowing that Dominique lives in a modern (parallel) world while Kereyan seems to live in a medieval-fantasy world. I used the ultra-classical dream pretext, taking the opportunity to make a wink at my beloved Little Nemo in Slumberland comic! Another cliché, but one I love...

I wanted to make it a two-page comic (lack of time to do more) but story called for another page...
I have scanned the various steps of the work in progress (WIP) and I submitted them in the scraps section: OCBC 1 - B1 - WIP 1 (5 pages!).

Edit: I had a scanner issue, so to respect deadline I uploaded the latest WIP I have, but now this is the final version.
I am not super happy with this, as I has to rush, so inking is sloppy, anatomy could be better, I was rusty on the inking and I found that I have no good brush, they are all wear out!

C'est ma première participation à un OCBC ! Ce sont des concours de batailles de personnages originaux.
Je suis opposé à ~Kadarami

et son personnage : Kereyan qui peut devenir un griffon pendant la nuit.
Je voulais faire une bataille du côté léger (amusant), mais il est plus facile de se moquer d'un gros méchant guerrier que d'un jeune, apparemment faible, personnage... Donc j'ai fait un combat relativement classique, essayant d'utiliser autant que je pouvais la longue histoire que ~Kadarami a fourni.
J'ai dû faire quelques extensions à son histoire, comme Serena étant capable de conjurer des créatures, directement ou pas, ou même entraînant Kereyan. Hé, je devais trouver une façon de faire rencontrer ces personnages, sachant que Dominique vit dans un monde (parallèle) moderne alors que Kereyan semble vivre dans un monde médiéval-fantastique. J'ai utilisé le prétexte ultra-classique du rêve, en profitant pour faire un clin d'œil à ma BD chérie, Little Nemo in Slumberland ! Un autre cliché, mais un que j'aime...

Je voulais faire une BD en deux pages (manque de temps pour faire plus) mais l'histoire réclamait une autre page...

It is imperfect, but not so bad. I dug out my good old faithful Pentel pocket brush (with ink tank) to ink it. It is harder to make fine and regular lines with it, but it is easier to use than by taking an ink bottle and a regular brush you have to clean up after work.

Il n'est pas parfait, mais pas si mal. J'ai exhumé mon fidèle bon vieux pinceau de poche Pentel (avec réservoir d'encre) pour encrer le strip. Il est plus difficile de faire des lignes fines et régulières avec lui, mais il est plus facile à utiliser qu'en prenant un flacon d'encre et un pinceau ordinaire qu'il faut nettoyer après.

I wanted to do something a bit "virtuosic" to show my know-how (could be better...), with symbolic meaning (with a vague reminicence of Da Vinci's man in a circle, and the use of the number 5 which I like: 5 tips in the head, 2x5 fingers, 5 limbs), and using the idea of celtic knots, which I love.

I drawn it on ruled paper, taking care of symmetry... Which I didn't used as is, anyway, but at least it gave me an idea of the final rendering, and it allowed me to take care of central transitions.
I drew, working on interlaces to make them interesting. It wasn't obvious, even more on the hands. I also took care of spacing the lines, to take in account strong downscaling and to balance the blacks and whites.

Then, by transparency, I cleaned it with a black felt pen, drawing only the right part with small overshots on the central part. Then, I scanned it, patiently touching up irregularities (still some work to do) almost pixel by pixel (on a master picture of 1500x1500 pixels!), and I use mirroring to complete it with perfect symmetry.

Then I erased the going above/under with white lines, reducing their width in the hands to preserve lines too close.

I want to vectorize it, to ease the process of smothing it furthermore.

Je voulais quelque chose un peu « virtuose » pour montrer mon savoir-faire (tout relatif...), symbolique (avec vaguement l'idée de l'homme inscrit dans un cercle de De Vinci, et l'utilisation du nombre 5 que j'aime bien : 5 pointes dans la tête, 2x5 doigts, 5 membres), et utilisant le principe des nuds celtiques que j'adore.

Je l'ai dessiné sur papier à carreaux, en soignant la symétrie... Que j'ai de toute façon pas utilisée telle quelle, mais au moins cela m'a donné une idée du rendu final et ça m'a permis de soigner les transitions centrales.
J'ai dessiné en travaillant les entrelacs pour qu'ils soient intéressant. Pas évident, surtout au niveau des mains. J'ai aussi pris soin à bien espacer les traits, en vue d'une forte réduction, et d'équilibrer les noirs et blancs.

Puis, par transparence, j'ai mis au propre avec un feutre noir, en ne dessinant que la partie droite avec léger dépassement au-delà du centre. Enfin, je l'ai scanné, j'ai soigneusement retouché les irrégularités (y'a encore du boulot) quasiment pixel par pixel (sur une image maître de 1500x1500 !) et j'ai utilisé l'effet miroir pour le compléter avec une symétrie parfaite.

Enfin, j'ai effacé des passages dessus/dessous avec des traits blancs, réduisant la largeur dans les mains pour préserver les traits trop proches.

Je l'ai dessiné sur papier à carreaux, en soignant la symétrie... Que j'ai de toute façon pas utilisée telle quelle, mais au moins cela m'a donné une idée du rendu final et ça m'a permis de soigner les transitions centrales.
J'ai dessiné en travaillant les entrelacs pour qu'ils soient intéressant. Pas évident, surtout au niveau des mains. J'ai aussi pris soin à bien espacer les traits, en vue d'une forte réduction, et d'équilibrer les noirs et blancs.

Puis, par transparence, j'ai mis au propre avec un feutre noir, en ne dessinant que la partie droite avec léger dépassement au-delà du centre. Enfin, je l'ai scanné, j'ai soigneusement retouché les irrégularités (y'a encore du boulot) quasiment pixel par pixel (sur une image maître de 1500x1500 !) et j'ai utilisé l'effet miroir pour le compléter avec une symétrie parfaite.

Enfin, j'ai effacé des passages dessus/dessous avec des traits blancs, réduisant la largeur dans les mains pour préserver les traits trop proches.

Je vais le vectoriser pour faciliter le processus de lissage des traits.

I had a dream... I often have dreams that are real action movies, with lot of events, but usually I have only vague recollection. But I had a dream so strange I recalled it when I was awake.
I am in a kind of university, full of halls, corridors, stairs... I take a lift, which suddenly stop. Then it start an horizontal move! I find myself, through a window (!), going on rails between two towers of the university, passing by buildings above the ground...
I had the idea to use this dream as the starting sequence of a comic. I used a new character, Muriel Lazzulli better looking than myself...

The first version of this page is here. Not bad, but it was confusing. So I made a high quality laser photocopy and cut out the good parts. Then I made two pages around these parts, with a bit more dialog, hopefully easier to understand.
Pour dA, I actually took panels from the initial page and pasted them with The Gimp in the two final pages, the copied parts were crappy after scanning...
It is the comic page where I used the most screen tones, in manga tradition... The remainder was done with brush.

J'ai eu un rêve... J'ai souvent des rêves qui sont de vrais films d'action, avec plein de péripéties, but en général je n'en ai que quelque vagues souvenirs. Mais j'ai eu un rêve si étrange que je m'en suis souvenu quand je me suis réveillé.
Je suis dans une sorte d'université, pleine de halls, de corridors, d'escaliers... I prends un ascenseur, qui s'arrête brutalement. Puis il commence un délacement horizontal ! Je constate, part une fenêtre (!), que je vais sur des rails entre deux tours de l'université, passant en hauteur devant des immeubles...
J'ai eu l'idée d'utiliser ce rêve en tant que séquence initiale d'une BD. J'ai utilisé un nouveau personnage, Muriel Lazzulli, visuellement plus plaisante que moi-même...

La première version de la page est là. Pas trop mal, mais assez confuse. J'ai alors fait une photocopie laser de haute qualité et j'ai découpé les parties correctes. Puis j'ai fait deux pages en intégrant ces parties, avec un peu plus de dialogue, espérant que c'est plus compréhensible.
Pour dA, j'ai en fait repris les cases de la première planche et recollées avec The Gimp dans les deux planches définitives, la photocopie s'avérant médiocre après scan...
C'est la page de BD où j'ai utilisé le plus les trames mécaniques, dans la tradition du manga... Le reste est fait au pinceau.

Another frustrating upload...
I wrote the full scenario for this comic, it should be 6 or 8 page long, but I ever finished only two pages. The third one remains at the state of vague layout sketch for years...
I don't know why I never finished it. Perhaps I lost interest after making the two most interesting pages...

Perhaps I will finish it someday, but I should rewrite a bit the scenario, it is quite wordy at the end.

In case it escaped some viewers, this is a kind of fan art, or, instead, an homage. To Tsukasa Hôjô's City Hunter, the well known manga featuring a fearless but leechy private detective and his feminine side-kick. I found interesting to make the homage with a twist, setting the action in some fantasy medieval town, hence the title...

I tried to capture the spirit of glamorous girls and outrageous slapstick comedy...

Une autre soumission frustrante...
J'ai écris le scénario complet pour cette BD, elle devrait faire 6 ou 8 pages, mais je n'ai jamais fini que deux pages seulement. La troisième reste à l'état de vague mise en place depuis des années...
Je ne sais pas pourquoi je ne l'ai jamais finie. Peut-être que j'ai perdu mon intérêt après avoir fait les deux pages les plus intéressantes...

Peut-être que je la finirai un jour, mais je dois réécrire un peu le scénario, il est assez verbeux à la fin.

Au cas où cela aurait échappé à quelques lecteurs, c'est une sorte de fan art, ou, plutôt, un hommage. Au City Hunter de Tsukasa Hôjô, le manga bien connu (aussi connu en France sous le nom stupide de Nicky Larson) mettant en scène un détective privé sans peur mais pervers, et sa partenaire. J'ai trouvé intéressant de faire cet hommage avec un détournement, situant l'action dans une bourgade médiévale, d'où le titre (town = bourgade, petite ville)...

J'ai essayé de capturer l'esprit avec des filles glamour et une comédie outrancière.

I have mixed feelings about this page, overall it isn't bad, but I see lot of weaknesses in the drawing, and it isn't funny! Oh, well... Of course, I didn't won.

The original size is A3 (297x420cm), so hard to scan (two parts, stitched together), and the page was teared when returned to me, hence some changes in tones.
Made with brush and China ink (tubular pen for girl's hair), plus screen tone for the dragon, the ground and the reflections on the windows of the car.

Oh, I forgot, here is the translation of the dialogs:

First panel:
- Do you hear me? I say there is a noise in the garage. Go check!
- Crap!
Second panel:

Hé, c'est peut-être le moment de montrer une de mes bandes dessinées !
J'ai fait quelques douzaines de pages de BD, aucune publiée.

Celle-ci a été faite pour un concours, organisé par la Fnac en 1991, le thème du concours étant résumé dans ma première case. Le thème disait « Dominique votre femme », donc j'ai dessiné un personnage mâle partageant quelque ressemblance avec moi...
Les autres personnages sont purement fictionnels ! Surtout le dragon...
La chute finale est plate, je ne suis pas très bon aux gags en une page, encore moins avec les strips ! Je voulais juste montrer que le dragon était familier avec la famille...
J'ai des sentiments mitigés à propos de cette page, globalement elle n'est pas mauvaise, mais je vois plein de faiblesses dans le dessin, et elle n'est pas drôle ! Enfin... Bien sûr, je n'ai pas gagne.

La taille de la page est A3, elle a été difficile à scanner (en deux parties, recombinées), et la page avait été froissée lors du retour de la Fnac, d'où quelques changements de tons.
Fait avec des pinceaux et de l'encre de Chine (plume tubulaire pour les cheveux de la fillette), et de la trame pour le dragon, le sol, les reflets des vitres de la voiture.

Another old stuff, this time a comic that is finished, for a change... The fact it has only three pages helps a bit, I suppose.
Believe me or not, but I think this is already a remake of three old and crappy pages, which I didn't found back yet. This is still old (17 years...) and, alas, quite crappy too.
I am frustrated by my limitations at anatomy, although I believe I improved a bit since then. Perhaps I should do a third remake (probably without screentones), I kind of like this story, with its punchline.
The vertical screentone looks awful after scanning. These are made for high resolution reproduction, not for the Web... Plus it is cheaper now to do them with some software like Manga Studio.

Ah, yes, I have to do a translation...

- Who is she?
- What does she do here?
- How did she come up to here?

Encore un vieux machin, cette fois une BD qui est finie, pour changer... Le fait qu'elle n'a que trois page a aidé un peu, je suppose.
Croyez-moi ou non, mais je pense que c'est déjà un remake de trois vieilles et moches pages, que je n'ai pas retrouvé encore. C'est toujours vieux (17 ans...) et, hélas, assez moche aussi.
Je suis frustré par mes limitations dans le domaine de l'anatomie, bien que je pense avoir fait quelques progrès depuis. Peut-être que je devrais faire un troisième remake (sans doute sans trames mécaniques), j'aime bien cette histoire, avec sa chute.
La trame verticale est affreuse après scan (moires). Elles sont faites pour une reproduction en haute résolution, pas pour le Web... Et maintenant il est moins coûteux de les faire avec un logiciel comme Manga Studio.

It is probably among the last serious (pencil & ink) works I did, before the big gap where I lost my job, met my wife, found a new job which I lost later, get children and all that stuff that make you busy...
Since it was about giving news about me, I featured my characters, Sylvan & Prune and me (kind of self-portrait...) in the three others, on the light, funny side, in the grand tradition of summer postcards!
First one (top-left) is a bit clumsy (big knee)...
The next (twist your neck!) is a remark on the time I spent, at these times, on the Minitel, a teletex terminal. It can be easily convert to Internet, so the legend would say: "Internet addict, trying to compensate the lack feeling with snail mail and props to trick the mind..."
The bottom-left is a wink to those sexy postcards found at the sea shore... "Ah, the French Landes! Their hot sand dunes..." "Hey!" "Don't change the framing!" The right side of the girl's face is a bit strange, but it was probably like that in the photo reference (some magazine).
The last one says: "Ah! The sun, a nice girl, a superb car... (or the reverse)" "Hasten to finish your photo, I want to get back my car and my mate" "OK Patrick, and thanks again!"

J'ai donc pensé que c'était un bon jour pour faire cette déviation : je l'ai faite pendant l'été 1994 (en juillet) avec l'idée de couper le dessin en quatre et envoyer les parties comme cartes postales.
Je ne l'ai jamais fait... En fait, j'avais même oublié ce travail, je l'ai trouvé en cherchant quelque chose à scanner.
C'est probablement un des derniers travaux sérieux (crayonné & encrage) que j'ai fait, avant la longue période sans dessin où j'ai perdu mon travail, rencontré ma femme, trouvé un nouveau boulot que j'ai perdu plus tard, eu des enfants et tout ce qui fait que vous êtes très occupé, sans voir le temps passer...
Comme ces cartes étaient conçues pour donner de mes nouvelles, j'y ai fait figurer mes personnages, Sylvan & Prune et moi-même (sorte d'auto-portrait/caricature...) dans les trois autres, du côté léger et amusant des cartes postales d'été !

For the monster, I was inspired by Jeff Smith's Bone comic, which I highly appreciate. Just inspiration, I didn't tried to copy his rat monsters...
The little girl is Prune, the main character of one of my unpublished comics. She meet elfs, fairies, trolls, and so on, but she is never afraid.
I wanted to make a contrast between the menacing, impressive creature, and the girl, more surprised / perplex (why is it aggressive?) than afraid.
The story behind this scene is yet to be written, despite the fact the drawing dates back to January 1993...

Après avoir montré un dessin comique et un monstre, je donne quelque chose d'intermédiaire : un monstre et une petite fille. La Belle et la Bête, en quelque sorte...

Pour le monstre, je me suis inspiré du comic de Jeff Smith, Bone, que j'apprécie énormément. C'est juste de l'inspiration, je n'ai pas cherché à copier servilement ses monstres rats...
La petite fille est Prune, le personnage principal d'une de mes BD, toujours inédite. Elle rencontre des elfes, des fées, des trolls, etc., mais elle n'est jamais effrayée.
Je voulais faire un contraste entre la créature impressionnante, menaçante, et la fillette, plus surprise / perplexe (pourquoi il est agressif ?) qu'effrayée.

L'histoire autour de cette scène reste à écrire, malgré que le dessin date de janvier 1993...

The rhythmic gymnastics pose is taken from Hikari no densetsu, the shôjo manga made by Izumi Aso. The related show was broadcasted in France under the name Cynthia ou le rythme de la vie. I am fan of the series, so I bought the manga (16 volumes), and a couple more from Aso-sama. It made me discover a superb sport discipline...

Le problème principal de ces planches était qu'elles ne sont pas bonnes (euphémisme...) : le dessin était mauvais (encore pire que mes déviations) et la narration est naïve et maladroite.
Mais j'aime mes personnages, pour lesquels j'ai conçu tout un monde et une histoire.
Donc j'ai commencé à faire une reconception des personnages (en avril 1991 !), les améliorant beaucoup, dans ces feuilles de modèle. Bon, il y a toujours quelques erreurs de dessin, but c'est nettement mieux !

Je montre là Béryl de Vilys, 9 ans, vive et téméraire, toujours en mouvement... sauf quand elle utilise son pouvoir (que je ne vais pas révéler maintenant !)

He has a more classical power: he can teleport (hence the strange top-left artefact, the graphical effect of a teleportation). He has also telekinesis power and can teleport stuff (less usual power).

This guy is much older than it seems... He has an extensive experience as soldier, and his power (yet to be unveiled...) has saved him an uncountable number of times. He is a good martial art practitioner.
Since the disappearing of the parents of Béryl and Cyril, he is their official tutor.

Celui-ci n'est pas fini, il manque la charte de proportions et les informations. Elles sont quelque part, sans doute, mais je dois les rechercher... D'où l'absence de nom de famille.

Ce gars est beaucoup plus âgé qu'il ne semble l'être... Il a une grande expérience de soldat, et son pouvoir (que je ne révèle pas encore...) lui a sauvé la vie un nombre de fois incalculable. C'est un bon pratiquant des arts martiaux.
Depuis la disparition des parents de Béryl et Cyril, il est leur tuteur officiel.

This guy is much older than it seems... He has an extensive experience as soldier, and his power (yet to be unveiled...) has saved him an uncountable number of times. He is a good martial art practitioner.
Since the disappearing of the parents of Béryl and Cyril, he is their official tutor.

Celui-ci n'est pas fini, il manque la charte de proportions et les informations. Elles sont quelque part, sans doute, mais je dois les rechercher... D'où l'absence de nom de famille.

Ce gars est beaucoup plus âgé qu'il ne semble l'être... Il a une grande expérience de soldat, et son pouvoir (que je ne révèle pas encore...) lui a sauvé la vie un nombre de fois incalculable. C'est un bon pratiquant des arts martiaux.
Depuis la disparition des parents de Béryl et Cyril, il est leur tuteur officiel.

But in short, this girl is the princess of a few islands near Japan, her father being the king of this archipelago. So she is extremely rich and has body guards accompanying her in the special school in France where she go to study, and will meet Cyril and Béryl. And Dominique, but actually, she is a long time friend of him already...

Her name is Iyona Ôtandoku, and right now I don't recall the meaning of the kanji I chose at the time... ^_^'
I won't reveal more this time, I will eventually redo the existing pages (where she didn't appeared yet) that are bad, and do more, I have a number of stories to develop!

Ce personnage (la fille) appartient au monde que j'ai créé, où Béryl de Vilys, Cyril de Vilys, Romain and Dominique Erawaza vivent.
J'ai écrit "monde" parce que c'est une uchronie (un monde parallèle au nôtre, où le passé est différent) pour laquelle j'ai créé une ligne de temps, et un bon nombre de biographies étroitement liées. Un monde où les super pouvoirs existent...

The girl Béryl comforts cannot see anything in daylight, but the bad guy stole her special goggles and Dominique is intending to reclaim them...

À vrai dire, Béryl est inspirée (design & personnalité

de Pelsia (Vanessa et la magie des rêves), une magical girl dans un dessin animé, et Dominique de Kôtarô, héros d'un manga assez méconnu, Kôtarô makaritôru...
Les conceptions étaient bof bof, et je voulais me débarrasser de ces influences pesantes, je les ai donc re-dessinés : Béryl, Cyril and Dominique. Mais je n'ai pas encore refait la BD. Je devrais réécrire l'histoire et dessiner les pages...
La scène que je montre prend place peu après les pages que j'ai dessiné. Dominique a déjà affronté le mauvais garçon à droite, c'est pourquoi ce dernier a le bras dans le plâtre... La fille que Béryl console ne peut rien voir à la lumière du jour, mais le dur a volé ses lunettes spéciales et Dominique veut les réclamer...

The poor old man has no hope, but Béryl, my character with some secret super powers, is perfectly safe. That's why she is more attentive to save her prudishness than her life... Plus the odor out of the mouth of the secondary monster isn't sweet...
The main monster isn't bad, although I should have made the muscles more around the limbs.
The pet monster is just OK. I wanted to make an organic car in the background, but it wasn't very good, that's why I made it much darker, to hide imperfections...
Overall a quite strong drawing that I like.

Le pauvre vieil homme n'a aucun espoir, mais mon personnage Béryl a quelques super pouvoirs secrets, dont elle ne court aucun danger. C'est pourquoi elle se préoccupe plus de sa pudeur que de sa vie... De plus, l'odeur de la bouche du monstre secondaire n'est pas agréable...
Le monstre principal n'est pas mal, mais j'aurai dû faire les muscles plus arrondis autour des membres.
Le monstre animal familier est juste OK. Je voulais faire une voiture organique à l'arrière-plan, mais elle n'était pas très bien faite, c'est pour ça que je l'ai faite beaucoup plus sombre, pour cacher des imperfections...
Finalement un dessin assez puissant que j'aime bien.

I love the TV series as well as the manga!
As often in Takahachi's manga, the key to humor and storytelling is to have lot of characters well defined, original and lovable.
So I started by making a cast, occupants of the same building, neighbors that cohabit more or less peacefully.
The Parisian building is owned by the little old woman at the first rank.
Occupants are a young man, fan of rock (looks a bit like a friend of mine...), another young man, comic artist, with a good collection of comics that the twins like to read on Wednesdays... A third young which is probably a nerd. The parents of the twins, quite classical in taste and habits. And the Japanese young woman, which is a newcomer at the start of comic. The comic artist will fall in love at first sight of the Japanese...
Well, you won't see the comic anytime soon. I started the first page, but only half inked it, then moved to something else. Like many dormant projects, it might revive one day.

And yes, I made a wink to the stupidest (and deadliest!) barbarian ever walking in an heroic fantasy world...

J'adore la série télé (Juliette je t'aime en France) autant que le manga !
Comme souvent dans les manga de Takahachi, la clé de l'humour et de l'histoire est d'avoir beaucoup de personnages bien définis, originaux et adorables.

Bon, vous ne verrez pas la BD de sitôt. J'ai commencé la première page, mais elle n'est qu'à moitié encrée, puis je suis passé à autre chose. Comme de nombreux projets en suspens, je peux le faire revivre un jour.

The hair of the woman use the same technique as in my Black portrait, made some months before (this one date to end of 1993). The man is a vague reminiscence of Vampire Princess Miyu's Larva character.

Not perfect, but I like it...

Un couple mystérieux, une scène qui laisse place à l'imagination, même si je n'ai pas encore écrit d'histoire autour de cette image.

Les cheveux de la femme utilisent la même technique que dans mon Black portrait, fait quelques mois avant (celui-ci date de fin 1993). L'homme est une vague réminiscence du personnage Larva de Vampire Princess Miyu's Larva.

I vaguely remember I drew this after a sentence in a book, a description of a painting.
Rain and grass probably made with tubular (technical) pen, man and tree made with brush, and China ink. October 1984. Scan kept dark on purpose...

Première vieillerie, prise dans un petit carnet de dessin commencé au début des années 80... Beaucoup de choses maladroites dedans, et quelques petites perles surprenantes, comme ce dessin...
Je me permet de juger positivement mon propre travail, parce que 23 ans après, j'ai presque une vue objective sur lui...

Je me souviens vaguement avoir dessiné ça d'après une phrase dans un livre, une description d'un tableau.

I had several characters, and of course I made a portrait of each of them. One day, I will dig out them and show them.
Anyway, sometime I made an illustration with one of my characters. Here, I show my illusionist character (forgot her name...) in her childhood, how she got her vocation.
This old drawing has lot of clumsiness, but I like it for its theme, the work on light, the attempt at setting a background and support characters.
I voluntarily left the scanner's dark rendering (and the paper texture) as I find it fits well the atmosphere.

Quand j'étais étudiant, au début des années 80, j'ai découvert les jeux de rôle. J'en ai essayé plusieurs, mais la plupart du temps je jouais à AD&D 2.
J'avais plusieurs personnages, et bien sûr j'ai fait un portrait de chacun d'eux. Un jour je chercherai ces portraits et les montrerai.
Quoiqu'il en soit, parfois je faisais une illustration mettant en scène un mes personnages. Ici, j'ai montré mon personnage illusionniste (j'ai oublié son nom) dans son enfance, montrant la naissance de sa vocation.
Ce vieux dessin a plein de maladresses, mais je l'aime bien pour son thème, le travail sur la lumière, la tentative de créer un décor et des personnages secondaires.
J'ai volontairement laissé le rendu sombre du scanner (et la texture du papier) parce que je trouve qu'il va bien avec l'atmosphère.
