Political maneuvering judo! Maybe sorta. The still-Silencio'd Hat would be making ribald running commentary pertaining to the UST were he able to - shame about that. (Still more fun to watch than Super-Senior Chess...)

Aaand Jareth joins Team Snorkack Hunt! This will go well.
[That last panel shows Suspicious-Sarah, not Jealous-Sarah, as is hopefully logical.]

Couple of obscure-ish shout-outs here:
- The Hat is now named Cervantès.... because parallels to Chaucer showing up in one extremely good Labyfic y'all should've read....
- And that trick of Jareth's (actually a repeat from when they departed the rooftop) which is counting on human 'catch' reflexes when something [potentially magically dangerous or a Big Plotty Deal] is tossed their way and thereby getting to play some potentially nasty, classic Faerie rules of "you accepted the gift!" (and demanding equivalent exchange/compensation, etc...) - was nicked from 'The Books of Magic', the Timothy Hunter series started by Neil Gaiman. Though presumably in this case it's just Jareth cutting corners and nothing outright malicious. Yeah.

Panel 3 Raoul is like "daaamn Norrington I thought you were the token good guy and not another one of the violently jealous pyschos..."

So, not only is Raoul a focus-on-the-positive kinda dude, Christine also narrowly escaped a Le Bustèd of her own. See, in the great stalking foodchain of the Building, Marsha pervs on the boys perv on the girls - meaning Sarah and Christine's apartment is far less interesting to her video surveillance. Like, there may be a blind spot in the girls' main room, where a note might have been found on a counter and certain (not quite right) Words were spoken in stress by a certain prima donna... And while Raoul shows some astuteness regarding a lot of this situation, yet he came to a very charitable conclusion as far as Christine is concerned, bless his unsuspecting fancy silk socks.

And for all their animosity, Raoul will easily concede to Erik that his music is VERY expressive.

... Erik is too precoccupied with this news of a sneaky messaj/Sarah maybe possibly being in trouble to fully appreciate Mag's proposal of kinky sexxytimes, because some E/S shippers are just too precious not to ~~troll~~tease a wee bit. But Mag is a very understanding and cool-headed lady.

(Edit for clarity - Raoul paid, and tipped. Possibly he feels he needs to buy himself some fans.)

Zut.

Meanwhile, back in the (greyscale world of the) Building...

... On the positive side of things, Jareth actually went to sort of ask for help from the one person who knows exactly what he is going through. (Which makes Erik, like, his Villainous Abductors Anonymous sponsor, I guess). And Erik seems to have found the Right Words.

On the down side, Christine is forced to twig that maybe her roommate's paranoia about stepping into her estwhile and not-quite-redeemed adversary's Fae kingdom wasn't entirely f*cking unjustified. Because the status quo of "No power over [Sarah]" has seemingly been un-quo'd by her doing so, or at least is in a state of crux or vulnerability.

On the third hand, Nanny Ogg has just taken a piddle on all those Scarpia Ultimatum and Abduction Is Love/I Have You Now, My Pretty tropes, I'd like to think.

....Would anyone like to reassess their poll votes for Dark!Jareth?

Guh! A round of applause for *LouisaGallie for doing another gorgeous colour job on top of having a fairly crappy week her side of things.

So, Sarah's not taking quite the same route through the Stone Maze this time - welcome to the Chess Garden.
(I've had that idea of crossing over the two Jim Henson properties like so for a while now.)
(And seriously - that Hat is annoying.)

Sarah's first line, is of course, in response to a certain kinda garbled-but-discernable "ya mother is a fraggin' aardvark!!" insult from the Pavement Brownies, and like pretty much every university student I've met, she can quote Monty Python's 'Holy Grail'* to the word.
You really need to have seen 'Labyrinth' to be getting these pages, but then that really is a bit of a given for this fancomic.

Luna has a HP-verse magical camera, naturally, for field observation.

(* : ... but doesn't recognize the Dread Creature of the Cave of Caerbannog for what it is on first sight. In all fairness, it LOOKS like a harmless little bunneh, though, and that's half the point.)

GND208 - Credit where it's due

Sarah spends a lot of time in usual comics snarking and reacting defensively, though in her defense certain people tend to make every interaction a points-scoring verbal sparring match.

And Luna just... doesn't do bitchy.

And while it might have seen a logical-if-weirdly-meta thing to do, no, Sarah didn't show Luna her movie as preparation before setting out on this trip, for... various reasons.

(Also, that first "endless path", cue the 80s-synthesizer-music-running sequence, until she has a tizzy, and meets the Worm, is definitely a point of Sarah's Labyrinth run I feel gets misunderestimated - it took me a few viewings to really have it sink in that in not-movie-time, she spends HOURS (the original 13 are down to "nine hours and twenty-three minutes" when the scene cuts shortly afterwards to Jareth dandling Toby) on that first corridor, running straight ahead with only the hopeful self-admonished "I'm only taking it for granted that it goes on for ever" and the clock ticking on her and just this unending unchanging unturning slightly claustrophobic path, moving ever away from the gates where she started and obviously not getting anywhere closer to her goal - that's pretty awful.)

(Step one, distract Karen/keep her busy. Step two, acquire address and phone book from mum's strictly out-of-bounds study. Step three, find Sarah's number, backing up hesitant 5-year-old reading skills with a birthday card signed by sister to compare letters and identify her name. Step four, make call to cool big sis in secret from mum who doesn't like you talking about monsters and goblins. Result: Get to borrow cool big sis' giant shaggy monster friend to show other kids on the playground.)

(Yeahh. I had a late, and a bit of a hurry.)

One possible plot point to take away from all this: Ludo won't be around for the girls' Labyrinth run.

Well ain't this boding.

The frying-pan as weapon of choice comes from Discworld [+ 'Tangled' and Sam Gamgee] by way of Roommates' "Such Stuff" dream-arc. And I have long been itching for the chance to pimp out Jareth's armour in the wicked style he sports over there.

And coincidentally, in both comics it seems there are characters who have the common sense reaction, when dealing with a potentially dangerous/overpowered Goblin King, to give Harry Dresden, wizard PI, a call. I mean, there goes one guy who has as good a chance as any of blasting his way through the Nevernever to kick Fae butt, if the money is good and there are girls in trouble.

(And panel 7 Christine is all like, "if he wannabe my lover, he gotta help out my friends".)

Yes, he changed his name from Williams to protect his brother's family, obviously. And in panel 5 he was catching himself from telling Sarah she looked more and more like her mother because that would be insensitive. And he is totally made of overprotective awesome to Sarah in contrast to her somewhat absent-minded, harried father. One day Agent Roumanov will owe Coulson a favour and Sarah is going to get the BEST Close-Combat Self-Defense 101 crash course.

'Cos there's no school like old school, when it comes to monster slaying. Unfortunately, swimming all the way from 11th century Scandinavia gets you in half-dozen pages too late.

This idea was sparked by some bright cookie in comments to the Monster Hunter arc - sing out for credit. I accidentally deleted a backlog of comments I meant to respond to.

You might notice that, fatally, Sarah has developed some minor resistance to Distracted by the ~~Bulge pants dangly bits~~Sexy and just about masters the art of maintaining eye contact against all odds.

Yes. While the 'Roommates' "Such Stuff As Dreams Are Made On" arc has delved deep in Jareth's split psyche and handled Shadow Archetypes, literary allusions à gogo and questions of life and death... I'm gifting him with a much simpler dream here.
It's fun to fluster him.

(Man, I am pushing the rating on this puppy...)

A slight call-back to 'Royal Weddings' ([link]), as it is once again demonstrated that somehow or other Jareth and Sarah have ended up with a faint mental connection to one another (stronger in the Dreaming) - if she picks up on the wedding-dress fantasy and shudders, you can bet a full-on would-be sex dream is going to hijack her higher thought processes - and quid pro quo the connection goes both ways.
And another reference to that page, as that is Edmund Pevensie with Luna in the final panel - established as a classmate of Sarah's - they actually get along rather well, although he is probably to blame for the lamp post appearing.

And we also find out Jareth's crystal ball dream-spinning/entrapping technique seems rather akin to the HP's Pensieve business.

(I'm sure those of you who were looking forward to the Opera Ghost/Goblin King epic throwdown are terribly disappointed.)

Aka, Episode one-hundred-and-forty-f*ck in the Roommate Wars between Goblin King and Opera Ghost, which their neighbours know well enough by now to steer clear of 'til the glitter settles.

Seriously. Last time one of these prank wars/cycles of excessive and ever-escalating retribution for a perceived slight/expressions of intolerable exasperation with their roommate's very existence happened, Christine dipped into her joint account with Raoul and took Sarah and Liz down to Hawaii for a lovely relaxing spa and beach weekend away from the bumps and the screeches and the madness and the boys never even noticed they were gone.

When you factor in things like Jareth's squid-like natural defense of dissimulating his escape with a cloud of glitter, Erik's ingenuity in designing deathtraps, the resilience and general expendability of goblin minions, highstrung artistic nerves... gravity-disabling powers.... history of violent psychotic issues... cabin fever... presence in the appartment of cherished and expensive and very vulnerable musical organs.... long-standing familiarity with the other's touchy issues... yeah, it's batten down the hatches and get out of the way of the storm time.

In other words, to quote Christine from last week, things are back to semi-normal 'round here. Legolas, this is what happens when you're busy off canoodling with Cheryl and neglect your job.

His schtick is cutting out his victims' eyes, placing them in his own mini-mouth-like eye sockets, "seeing" as they did briefly, then chomping down. Om nom nom.

Bahahaha. So while everyone is squeeing and flailing over 'Avengers' (including me, eh), Imma digging up last year's Marvel comicbook-movie fan-favourites...

Yep, continuity issues all up the wazoo. That's an 'X-Men' (movie I) version of Sabretooth, with a 'Wolverine: Origins' relationship with Logan, being tailed by 'X-Men First Class' Charles and Erik who are post-movie but still best bros. I DO WHAT I WANT.

(Hugh Jackman, you are a very fine-looking man, but I had forgotten how ridiculous your pretty, pretty tresses are in 'Van Helsing'. As are many things in that movie. Don't get me started on that Gypsy Princess stiletto-heelin' it through the Transylvanian mud....)

And yes that is calling back to the last time we saw Jareth taking notes to help him on his quest to ~~get into Sarah's pants~~ convince Sarah he is not a playing Fae rake solely intent on bedding, mocking and tossing her over.

... and yes, this arc is eventually going to get somewhere beyond crescendo cameo craziness.

*sigh* EDIT: Seeing as how the 'Van Helsing' movie pretty much ripped off all the interesting visual elements from 'Vampire Hunter D' ANYWAY, I'm afraid no, D will not be showing up as that would be redundant. Amano awesomeness and hand-demons notwithstanding.

GND184 - Monster Hunters, Part V - Card tricks

Christine does not approve of your sexist game mechanics!

This one is for the boyfriend, who is a big fan of the character. (and rather sulky he gets bounced.) Another cameo absolutely no one requested or suggested!

A brief explanation: Geralt of Rivia is from the video games/novels/Polish TV series 'The Witcher'. He is a magic-potion-enhanced (cat-like eyes, super reflexes...) mutant sorcerer&swordsman trained from a young age to slaughter nasty beasties. Witchers travel the land, a rather grim and f*cked up fantasy setting, hiring themselves out to local lords having trouble with marsh ogres or cursed princesses, stuff like that. The novels rather hilariously describe how feared/reviled they are - when Geralt enters a town, "dogs howl, cats hide and small children start crying."
He is an angsty aaaangsty character à la Drizz't, always musing on his outcast nature and whether the monsters are truly the ones he's paid to kill.
His world has, among other nonhuman races, the classic fantasy Elves - forest-dwelling arrow-happy xenophobes - but also is occasionally visited by the Wild Hunt, a dimension-hopping spectral horde of properly weird and powerful Fair Folk, and one of his main story arcs is trying to find his on-again-off-again love-of-his-life Yennefer, a wonderfully neurotic and extremely powerful sorceress, when she is abducted by the Fae.

The card thing has to do with a gameplay aspect in the first video game - Geralt gets to have a LOT of Optional Sexual Encounters, despite having regular girlfriends (he is amnesiac when it comes to Yennefer for a long time). Like, it is well ridiculous. In-story this is actually fairly reasonable and justified - all the potions Geralt ingested while training and growing up render him both immune to most human diseases and sterile. HOW CONVENIENT for all those medieval wenches, dryads, renegade princesses, courtesans, sexy female scholars...., who can show their gratitude for Geralt having saved their town/killed their abusive pimp/written them a poem/brought them flowers. And ~~because all video game developpers and players are male~~ these nubile young ladies are really very very grateful. Or just friendly. Or curious about human mating rituals. Or horny succubi. Or... Anyway - the gimmick is, the player gets a souvenir of each time he scores by obtaining a rather nicely-painted, Art Nouveau-esque card depicting the sexy lady he has just banged. The "gotta collect 'em all!!" trophy-like aspect strikes me as ridiculous and offensive and hilarious all at once.
(You gotta hope he didn't strike up a conversation with Ash Ketchum while they were waiting outside...)

[Someone pointed out his scar is on the wrong eyebrow - sorry, but I had this one magazine picture of him pinned up on my wall my entire adolescence with it on that side and I cannot change that Head-Spike. (and hey, Sarah's hair parting is on the opposite side of how it is in the movie anyhoo.)]

Buffy... may yet show up.

And as to the matter of what season Spike this is and the chip business - Who's to say he's truthin' ? I'm thinking for a "post-canon" Spike, the chip gives him a good excuse to act decent if he chooses to hang out with "good" characters, and an ace to play when least expected.

Also, Christine's anti-vampire stance was briefly mentioned in the Wibsy club introduction - basically - (the whole blood-drinking and sublimination of sexual urges aside)... what is the classic vampire if not a murderous aristo [often Frenchman] in period evening dress with hypnotic-esque powers hiding away underground and being predatory around young girls...? Been there, done that, starred in one of the original Gothic Romance tales. (Also, too many badphics think making Erik a vampire is such an original awesome idea...)

Anyone unfamiliar with Harry [Blackstone Copperfield] Dresden - good golly goodness, is that a search bar top right corner of your browser?
In a nutshell of awesome - Chicago Police's occult consultant, wizard private investigator, unhappy faery godson, snarky genre-savvy narrator of getting his ass handed to him by serious Big Bads, walking techbane, tendency to apply massive fireballs to tricky situations. Works with Bob, a very knowledgeable, lecherous spirit housed in a skull.
(Great book series, and one so-so TV show.)

He is not letting go of his staff because the girls' apartment kinda reeks, fig'ratively speaking, of Fae magic and it's making him a tad nervous. [Assume this is Books 1-5-ish power levels Dresden...]

What ho, Blind Mag (from Repo! The Genetic Opera)makes it into GND. Exact continuity with events in 'Roommates' is unreservedly fudged, as is the precise nature of her relationship with Erik, at this point.
As previously stated: giving the Phantom a blind girlfriend seems a bit trite and contrived, yet the Sarah Brightman connection and the emotional scars of both characters just make this too perfect a Crossover Ship to not explore.

Also, yes, the boys use cell phones.

And really, it *is* a bit odd that the ever insta-poofing, possessive and protective Goblin King was a no-show during that little kerfluffle on campus... non?

... while I don't subscribe to the Mayan end-of-times prophecy for 2012 (December 21 is 'The Hobbit' release, the world can't end then!), I do feel horribly cynical and a little depressed at the way some things are looking up ahead for the world (you know - financial meltdown, Big Money getting away with everything, the rise of the far-right parties here in Europe, the head-banging obscurantism and reactionary sexist, poverty-bashing attitudes coming from the Republican candidates, SOPA and its ilk....) .... despite being guardedly optimistic about my personal situation ... and, more whimsically, I can't help but wonder if the sheer amount of expectations that something is due to happen in 2012 won't somehow, in some Discworldian-power-of-human-belief rules-of-narrative-causality twist, cause something to actually happen...

Anyhoo. In the light of all that, best wishes to all.

Both Jareth and the assembly of Dear Readers will know, of course, that that last line qualifies as a city-wide, down-central-avenue, twenty-float parade and cheerleader-trumpetted welcome back from Sarah.

Yes, that is him.
Sarah can tell because she knows what he smells like (something like cinnamon and leather and night air and magic, as any Labyrinth fanfic writer knows).

(and thanks to the couple of people whose comments made me ponder and weigh the comic/awful potential of an originally unplanned return of the Pale Man. Yes, he has earned a Brownie sash, too. Or taken it from a corpse. Your call.)

(I had plenty of alt titles in mind for this one, from the still-somewhat-seasonal 'You Betta Watch Out...', or 'A Warm Welcome', but when one has a chance to reference and therefore rec' one of the best damn vampire/childhood films out there (... the original Swedish one, with all my love to Hit-Girl...), seems a major fandom fail not to do so. Watch it. It is creepy and ghastly and adorable all at once.)

O_O Ack. Maybe some day I'll finish this as smoothly illustration-like as I'd wish, but that day is not today.

(Influenced by French telefilm version with Gérard Depardieu - while I'm no fan of his butt-nose, he brought a lot of presence to the role).

- Azi and Crowley at an unprepossessing but very yummy little restaurant in the Marais. Random order-to-go guy is a trifle surprised by them eating en terasse while the weather is Not Warm, but the angels aren't too bothered by such physiological trifles.
