I really wanted to capture a sense of motion and wild action in this picture; the sweeping curves of the track, twisting of the cloak, topplling of the timber supports and detail of the right hand side of the vignette, help create that mood. The eye is led through the composition by the points of light, whilst the resolution of the action is framed between the beams. ]]>

This is my latest cover for the Talisman boardgame. As uusal I had to creat a composition using a diverse range of pre-existing characters ranged against a monster, in this case a water elemental. I used the complimentray colours of blue and yellow/orange, along with saturation/desaturation, to help the narative flow, and make that beastie pop-out. ]]>

"To soar you must fly high on your journey.'

I enjoyed working with the simplicity of this composition; lots of horizontals help contrast with the amorphous cloud shape, which then emphasises the Dragon in flight.

I also experimented with a different acrylic gel for most of the painting, and was especially pleased with the blending on the upper third of the sky. ]]>

This was my first exploration of painting in oils. I was excited by the process, and especially enjoyed the energy that I could get into the rendering of the clouds, and texture of the treees.

"Wherever blood is spilled in anger the Red Knight rides."

This piece shows a Goddess rearing above a battlefield. I wanted to carry the feeling of mist into the figure to help create the air of a supernatural apparition, this was achieved by blurring and softening the edges of the figure. The cloak is a key example as it dissolves into the background. ]]>

"Any human eyes witnessing the twisted form of that city soon wished they hadn't when they saw the horrors within..."

I really enjoyed painting this epic scene showing the underground city and its denizens.

I chose a low a horizon line and 3-point perspective to help with the impression of awesome scale. The eye is drawn to the centre by the 'train track' cavern walls which contrast with the strong central vertical silhouetted by the central light.

The palette is fairly desaturated against the glowing green lichen, which helps give depth and lead the gaze around. ]]>

"Who needs a pick and shovel when you have one of these."


I loved working with the juxtaposition between the stocky dwarf and elongated insectoid Umber Hulk. The help emphasise the disparity in the relationship I put the Dwarf into the shadow cast by his monstrous companion. This in turn helped provide the different focal points of light against dark and vice versa. ]]>

"Harsk really began to wonder why he'd agreed to investigate the mine, especially when he was yet to step foot inside it!"

This is a dramatic cliffhanger moment, and I really wanted to convey that through the composition and palette. Lots of strong lines lead our eye to the point of impact between Harsk and the creatures emerging from the crevasse. This is accentuated by the use of saturated colour set against more muted surroundings.

'The first wingbeat signals the start of life’s journey.'

Dragons are invariably shown as solitary and frequently engaged in combat, which is why I chose to paint a more intimate scne, but still one wrought with it's own drama and narratives.

The compositional structure is a strong triangular form, drawing the viewer to the parents head, accentuated by the positioning of the sun and rim light. Overlaid this is a sinuous 'S' which helps with creating energy and movement. ]]>

'Scar not only carries a big axe, but he can also wield some powerful magic.'

This was created as the cover art for a Dungeons & Dragons fortune cards set. The focus of the image needed to be in the top part of the picture, in this respect the magical fire proved to be a useful tool in providing focus and letting me add some strong rim lighting to give the figure depth.

I have always been inspired by mountains, I love the way that light can illuminate them, and they are also the perfect dwelling place for Dragons. Both of them have a mysterious, unknowable quality, that combined seems even more powerful. ]]>

This piece of art was created for the Dungeons & Dragons supplement 'the Book of Vile Darkness'. It is unusual to be asked to show a Golden Dragon in such a parlous situation, and I relished showing the details of the fight.

I tilted the horizon line to add tension, which along with the curve of the Dragon's back and wing leads the viewers eye to the action on the right.

The artwork also needed to fit into a strict format to fit across two pages, and you can find out more about that on my blog:

'As Vecna recited the incantation the vicious maelstrom whirled around him whipping itself into a frenzy that soon, oh, so soon, he would unleash upon the world...'

This piece of art was created for the Dungeons & Dragons supplement 'the Book of Vile Darkness'. I deliberately chose a restricted colour scheme to keep the action readable, whilst also dropping the saturation back so that the contrasting glow from the book would really stand out.

I especially enjoyed trying to fit as many different types of Demons and Devils into the image, so that the players could enjoy trying to spot them on the battlefield.
