Habitable Worlds

Two Califormed moons orbiting one another in the Sunatta System millions of light years away.
The cratered moon in the distance is not finished with the califorming process, while the close up world has already been finished.

Califorming is making a planet/moon which used to be dead habitable, it is often called terraforming by others.
These worlds are both very small, roughly the size of Murcury so their atmospheres are at risk of erosion, they all have a transparent invisible global dome built around them miles above their atmospheres.

Neptunian Descent

Decades from now a small atmospheric probe plumets through the saphire clouds of the distant planet, Neptune. In a little over an hour its harrowing journey across the Solar System will come to an end as its main parachute fails, casting it down into the crushing depths of the planet's interior. Until then the probe relays back telemetry of its surroundings to a waiting orbiter. The faint glow of a far-off sun struggles through the gloom. A icy sleet of methane rain envelopes the probe as distant lightning illuminates the swirling and billowing cloud tops.

ARTIST's COMMENTARY
This is the first new(ish) piece I've uploaded to DeviantART since July or August. Its not really a full-on feature piece like Saturnian Dream was. Instead in's more of a digital painging study, and a rather quick one at that. I probably should have left out the probe, but without its just a rather naked cloudscape.

I've recently found my place in the drawing, and now that i know the artistic way that I want to keep, I've started practicing more, seeking resources, brushes and more ways to work, because in the rest of my artwork the importance it's normally in the humanoids, and the space is just... Not deep nor attractive. (in my opinion).
So I've started doing space art to practice and to give more realism to the rest of my artwork, specially to the planets.

This picture it's the first of that practices.

Been replaying Mass Effect 3 again, and felt rather inspired. My first piece of space art ~7 hours, Photoshop CS2

I mostly followed Advanced Planet Tutorial (who credits several other artists, that I strongly recommend checking out too!). Helped out a lot, definitely learned quite a bit.

This is the planet Aertwaen. It is the first planet in the Wanna System. Wanna is a K2 type star and Aertwaen orbits within its habitable zone just at the edge of tidal lock. Instead the planet is in an orbit in which its axial rotation is in a 16:1 resonance with its orbital period. Its year is exactly 16 days long. Its day is equivalent to 96 Earth hours. This means that in its short year, each day can experience as much climatic change as a terrestrial month. Its axial tilt is inclined 25 degrees to its orbital plane so it has seasons.

Aertwaen is an arid world with temperate zones at its poles where there are permanent bodies of water. The South Polar region is dominated by an ancient impact basin with rings of islands surrounding a central rebound peak. This mountain at the Soth Pole is the only place on Aertwaen that ever experiences snow (on the night of the winter solstice). The summit is considered to be holy by the intelligent inhabitants.

Aertwaen's ring system shades the equatorial regions. There is a band of cloud and rain that follows the shadow of the rings through the year. This brings equiable conditions to the lifeforms on any spot in the hot dry latitudes for two days each year.

I created this world for a completed, but as yet unpublished novel.

My latest piece created using Photoshop CS5. This one took a few days to do. Originally, this was supposed to be a large planet scene. However, after spending a day working on the nebula, I decided to make the nebula the main focus of the picture and shrank the planet in order to enhance the size of the nebula. I created the planet texture using Visible Earth. The nebula was painted from scratch, no textures used. I painted the nebula using these brushes [link] by .

A nebula, which to me, bears some resemblance to a green dragon.

I used Apophysis 2.02 to create a flame and managed to mutate it into this beauty using the magic green play button. Additional brushing was applied in Photoshop in order to further develop the flame. I also used a variety of layers and blending modes to enhance the flame.

I started by sketching several drafts and pondering my options. I wanted to convey a scene in deep space with a muse bestowing imagination and creativity to the world. Also with a shadowed figure seeming observing and manipulating the flow of the imagination and creativity, in a sense creating his dreams. After a few different sketches I had employed a technique often used in the Renaissance using triangular placement to unite the three major focal points. Another technique I decided to use was implied line, in both the possession of the muse and the point where the shadowed figure is looking. So no matter where you look your eye eventually moves to the orb. It was support to be the earth but it sort of just became an orb of light instead and also the source of light. The bright white light on the face and hand of the figure plus the body of the muse creates a better aspect of value and form. I had good contrast between the large use of white and the black of space. Then the construction of the anatomy for the muse began. She had to be basically pointing her entire body at the orb. I also wanted to leave her nude to show more of the values on her skin tone. At that point it was time to start the actual poster. Starting with a black background on Photoshop I slowly began digitally painting the entire scene. Using only the paint brush tool and 9 different colors; red, green, blue, dark purple, black, white, and three different shades of gray. At some point I wanted to alter the phrase “you can create tomorrow”. In my own personal belief, tomorrow will always be there weather I am or not, no matter what I do the sun will still rise in the morning, illuminate the world and bring life. But without or imaginations it would merely be a massive ball of burning gas. No beauty, no passion, no life, for these are human things and without them, without imagination we are nothing. That is my ultimate philosophy, so I wanted to convey that to the viewer, while still abiding by the guild lines of the competition. A few sentences came to mind; “Anything you can imagine can be drawn, written, acted, or built. For your dream belong to you and only you. Apply them and you can create tomorrow.” This I decided, while still telling want I wont to say, was too long. It needs to be shortened, more challenging, simpler. I eventually compressed it into,” Dare to create your dreams, and you can create tomorrow.” The letters were later added in using Adobe Illustrator. The figures hand at early stages was giving me trouble, both its anatomy and shading were difficult to depict. So using a bright lamp in a dark room I create a few reference photos of my left hand. Finally I moved on to the flowing shapes, they were very fun to draw at first but they soon became rather toilsome. Originally they were more complex, with intricate designs in each shape. But I felt it would be too distracting from the rest of the image, so they to became simpler. There I added the tenth color; a silvery tan. Finding room and the right font size for the text was tricky, or rather irritating. In fact once I got home to submit it I reanalyzed I had left some spare words in the wrong spot. So I ended up using a regular paint program to try and remove them. In the end the work was a success and I finished it on time.

Comments: This is a present for my father, which his birthday is today. I combined the two things he likes most. I had a weird ideal to create this about a few days ago. Lighthouses are not used as much as they used to be a long time ago, but I thought when we start exploring space more there is a chance that we may use them again. Logically this would not work, but I still think the concept is really cool. Hope you do too.

Just for fun who can guess what nebula I used in the background? Yes, it is a real one.

Hey, here's a new wallpaper from me. I tried a different approach this time and started out with a white instead of a black canvas. Personally, I wouldn't have expected that much of a difference
