WIP: Marilyn Manson Portrait

For my Intro to Painting class, we are examining "celebrity" (the idea and an actual celebrity) by painting the portrait of a celebrity. I've chosen Marilyn Manson because he's a genius, and one of my biggest artistic inspirations. I also think he's one of the most culturally relevant musicians of the 1990s/early 2000s. I originally tried to be pretty photorealistic, but I decided that it wasn't fitting. My goal with the final product is to make the viewer uncomfortable a bit, and to be a little humorous and ostentatious.

Here is a piece that I started for no apparent reason about 3 weeks ago. I wanted to hop back into art, and I really (REALLY REALLY REALLY OTL) like the word "headclouds." I have no clue why. It's an interesting combination to me, and (both versions of) the song it came from are really brilliant. What would headclouds be? Your head is in the clouds? Clouds that are coming to a head?

I had no specific goal going into the piece. I started by taking the font "Bebas" and severely messing with it. I followed a motif for the text and wanted to design something to go along with it. Naturally heads came to mind (omgpuns).

Thanks to *otohime0394 and =JaiLatte for giving me feedback in the early design stage! Here is a Sta.sh'd version of an earlier copy, which is significantly different from the final product!

A Trio of Rs Book [Coptic]

This is a coptic stitch book I made for my RA (Resident Assistant) on my floor. She's been awesome to us! She makes us food every other Sunday and also gave me a birthday gift this year, which was the first time (and probably the only) an RA has done that for me. xD

The design is a trio of three letter Rs because her name is Renee. Covers made with illustration board, covered with corrugated cardboard on the outer faces and decorative paper on the inside. Binding is coptic stitch with beeswaxed thread that I dyed orange.

The stylized characters, 忍耐, on this book mean "patience." In Japanese it's pronounced nintai and in Mandarin it's pronounced rěnnài. Yana told me that red is one of her most favorite colors, so I dyed the binding thread red and braided a clasp on the right side of the book that has red, brown, and black string. The book has 10 signatures of lined paper inside and is bound with a coptic stitch.

Hello!
The first piece of art I'm uploading from my Amish vacation is this, my first oil painting ever! I completed it over the course of a month while I was at home.

My friend gave me a canvas and she had tried to paint some green, hilly-looking thing on it, but eventually gave up and said she didn't want it. As the canvas hung over my bed, I noticed that the blob looked like a woman's face, and then I drew on some inspiration from HR Giger's work. C:

Living Landscapes

This was inspired by Florence+The Machine's song, "Landscapes." Particularly these lines:

Cause she's just like the weather, can't hold her together
Born from dark water, daughter of the rain and snow

Growing in the landscape, darling, in between you and me

I thought it would be cool to paint something like this, where the woman is becoming part of the landscape, or vice-versa. It's done in watercolor and took about 5 hours total! C:

Hello from Amishland! I'm stopping by to post this design I did. I don't have experience in cubism, and I wasn't exactly inspired right off the bat, but I came up with this design for the latest design challenge.

I started with a sketch of two heads merged together and then went from there. The color palette was a mish-mosh that I found worked nicely together.

Even if people completely ignore this and no one cares about it, that's okay with me, because I'm strangely very satisfied and happy with this even though it could quite possibly be the worst thing I've ever made.

If you couldn't tell, it's a bunch of faces. My take on the birth of an idea.

Last submission of my freshman year! I had to get this one in before I left.

I drew and painted this yesterday, and I'm fairly happy with the results ~~except for the massive fail at painting a wave~~. Actually, I only drew in the serpent, and then decided to wing it and try and draw a seascape.

That may have been a bad choice because I don't know how to do that yet, but I am happy with the colors, the serpent, and the little boat people who are about to be obliterated!

Feng Mei Notebook [Coptic]

This is a coptic-stitch notebook that I made for an old woman who I met in a Buddhist Temple in Chinatown. Her name is 凤美, which means "beautiful phoenix." A lot of work went into the planning of this book, especially because Chinese culture has special meanings attached to certain colors. I nearly wrote her name in red thread, which would have meant I was wishing for her to die and haunt the earth as an evil spirit.

So, my first step in this process was to dye the binding thread gold. The package said "Aztec gold," so I bought it. It came out more orange-like. I don't even know, what the heck is "AZTEC gold"?!

I cut the covers out of art board, the pages are from a sketch book, and the inner covers are covered in thicker yellow paper. Her name was done using a single piece of green hemp cord, which I threaded in and out of holes that I measured out and punched into the cover with an awl. If you want to see another example of that, you can look at these two deviations:

So, yep, I'm giving this to her today! Took about 5 hours total.

The Walking Dead

To me there's a lot wrong with this, but it was still a lot of fun to do. The composition is too boring, the background is terrible, and the hair looks more like sheets of wood or something. xD

But nonetheless... I am going through a withdrawal from The Walking Dead, waiting for the third season to come on this Fall, and I was inspired to paint this. I drew it in pencil first. The total thing took about 3 hours.

This is also a companion piece to my first oil painting ever, which is in the works now.

Going along with the theme of the Delicately Insert Into Orifice illustration, I made this one. It's inspired by another song of Rolo Tomassi's called "Tongue in Chic." In context, the lyrics are:

Listen to me when I say I am not afraid to say this

The illustration is more my interpretation of the line. I wanted to make it look like the processes going on inside his head were convoluted and too complex, thereby making him numb to emotion because of all of the intricacies of his thoughts. I would love feedback!

Delicately Insert Into Orifice (Obey the Trap)

During a meeting at a real-life club (#NYUDAC) we were designing posters, and I decided that I wanted to have an artistic project to work on for the following days. So I started this on Thursday and just finished it now (after finishing every homework assignment I have until Monday ). The main quote, "Obey the Trap" is taken from the first line of Rolo Tomassi's song, "Nine." This isn't necessarily how I interpreted their song, just that specific quote. It's supposed to be the machine of society producing perfect little copies, which I have recently come to think is quite common. Everyone just goes about their life acting like everyone else.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this and learned a lot from it. I'm very excited with the final copy, and I especially like the tag on the bottom, "Delicately Insert into Orifice." I would love feedback on it! Everything in here was made by me in Illustrator. I have to say that I quite like messing with "normal" geometric shapes and making them come together like they do here. Every part of this piece was placed deliberately by me. Everything is where I want it to be.

Dragon Notebook [Coptic]

This is a book that I made in about 4 hours using a coptic stitch, some art board, decorative paper, and bookbinding thread/hemp cord. On the cover is a Chinese character, 龍, which is a traditional version of 龙 (dragon, lóng).

The overall design of the book is simple. It has five holes, coptic binding, and simple paper on the cover. What's interesting (to me) is the Chinese character on the cover.

So let me tell you how I did it. xD You can see my guide here:

First I looked at the character and measured out distances between the different "levels" of the strokes. It is completely proportionate, and every hole I made aligns with another one!

After I measured it and decided how to approach it best, I cut one single piece of hemp cord and began threading it through the holes in the cover. I started at the top left-most hole and ended on the bottom right.

The character is made by going in and out of certain holes so that you can never see how it's made from the outside. But I did keep the inside of the cover bare so you can see the way I did it. xD

I hope that made sense.

This is an idea that I had for a poster or something similar because in my class our teacher was talking about how no one looks up in the city anymore. :C I personally look up more than I look down because of the awesome buildings and stuff, but I guess it's understandable that most people don't because everyone walks and texts. So this is just something everyone should keep in the back of their mind. Start looking up!

A Deadly One

I really wanted to design a piece using the continuity and shape of lines, and so I decided to create this, which I am quite proud of and like a lot! I was wondering how many people can see the word that it spells. If not, that's okay. Interpret it how you will, since I'm not going to tell you. But it does say something, so I suppose it's a bit abstract!

I used Adobe Illustrator 5.5 to create the dark blocks for the letters, and then exported that to Photoshop for coloring, texture, and general effects that I don't know how to do in Illustrator. xD So I suppose it's half-vector. The texture is from a stock image that I can't find, but it's not on dA. It's on another stock site, and I remember that it was moss of some sort.

Recipe Book for Mom [Coptic]

This is a small book that I created from scratch (using materials I bought, of course) for my mother. It's a recipe book for her to write things in because she throws the entire pantry into the pot and whatever comes out is godly.

So now she can document it!
Originally, I tried to make just a print on the front cover, but I made it in orange (NEVER DO THAT ON A YELLOW BACKGROUND) and it was impossible to see...it also came out really badly.

So instead of dying from panic, I glued a small piece of textured paper over the area to make it look purposeful, and since I like blue/orange combinations, I made the print in blue ink instead! It's a bowl with chopsticks in it. <:

So yeah, I hope you like it! Oh, the binding is called coptic stitching. I've never done it before -- this was my first.

This is my design for the t-shirt design challenge, with the theme of "cute monsters." I sketched out my idea first, and then began with the paint splatters. I personally am very, very proud of it, and I hope that if you like you vote for my design!

The Bearer

I began this the other night on a whim, and I started with the head of this creature. It's kind of inspired by eels, elephants, and other wrinkly, trunk-bearing animals. There is blue gap for its mouth/nose in the center of its head, and there's a hole in its stomach for something mysterious.

I had a lot of fun with texture in this drawing, but before I painted it you couldn't tell what it was. The lines all looked like a mess. xD Now that I added color to it, now you can see how it was in my head. <: There is no real message or inspiration for this, only my imagination. The thing on its back is kind of like a spider's egg sac. <:

I also discovered a technique I quite like, where you paint with excess water while holding the paper vertically. If you blow on the lines of saturated pigment, you can make splattery marks!

Welcome to dA 'mote Machine, a Flash application that I created so than ANYONE can make their own emoticon!

You CAN upload your creation to your own gallery!
You CAN derive new works from your creation here!
It is APPRECIATED if you link back to this deviation when uploading your creation!

You CANNOT use your creation as an original character (OC).

Why?
Well, after thinking about this and hearing from people what they thought about this, I have decided that you cannot claim the creations here as an OC, which means "original character." The reason is very justly that other OCs may already exist with similar styles, and if you claim this as an OC, it's not really original. This edit was made on 2/12/12, so anything made after this date is a violation of the rule. Anything made before is okay. Thank you for understanding!

Why dA 'mote machine?
My theory is that anyone should be given the resources to create and customize their own emoticon! With this application, you are given the tools to create your own emoticon! After you create your emote, I highly encourage you to develop it on your own! This Flash application does not give you free control over all of the emote's features, which is why it is important for you to develop the emote on your own! The point is not to make it simple to make emotes, the point is to give newcomers the resources they need to get started emoting, or to give experienced emoticonists a fun experience!

After you create your emote, why don't you look at #Emotication for more resources?

What do you do?
Very simply, just click through the navigation to select the parts from your emoticon. If you click on the QUESTION MARK icon you will find help, and if you click on the SPEECH BUBBLE icon you will find more information about this application.

Please do not make anything for this project until we communicate because your piece needs to do the following:

Use the same hex colors as the rest of the emoticons;
Be made for all 8 colored bases. In other words, if you make one accessory, it needs to be made in 8 colors.

Fun Facts:
By my calculation, there are 272 possible combinations of pieces possible in this application. This is not including the possible combinations with the panning tool.

I roughly estimate that there are over 800 lines of code involved in this project.

The help and more info scenes are actually images, not pages.

This took me the entire month of January to complete. For the first two weeks I literally worked on it every day.

I hand-colored and created every sprite you see in it now.

All code here is written from scratch.

The downloading function took me longer than most of the other scenes. o-O

Sketchbook for Aidan [Stab]

This is a sketchbook I made for my younger brother as a Christmas present. It was actually my first experience binding a sketchbook, so I am pretty proud of it, and he likes it too!

The style of binding is called asa-no-ha toji, and it's a variant on traditional Japanese stab binding.

Sketchbook for otohime0394 [Stab]

During my Amish vacation, I decided that I would take an old box, fancy paper, newspaper, and a paper-cutter to make =otohime0394 (Anna) her very own sketchbook! I used a Japanese stab-binding technique called asa-no-ha toji to bind the two covers, and for the sketch paper inside I sliced up pages from a larger sketchbook.

All of the assembly here is done by hand, including that cross-hatching pattern that I used with the paper on the front and back cover. This sketchbook took me about 7 hours to make completely.

Sometime during this process, I got the idea to make her name using colored cord that I had laying around, so I measured out the width and height of each letter and then poked the proper holes into the cover, after which I threaded the twine through it and tied it off on the inner cover.

Unfortunately when I scored the cover there was an issue so it didn't come out as precise as I had hoped, and I question its functionality.

But it's now with =otohime0394!

I started drawing a snail and I got this!
But I did have conscious motives behind the design. For one thing, the creature is unwanted and too grotesque for society. His deformed face, wrinkly body, and phallic nose-thing all make him "ugly." He is really kind of like the epitome of my inner self-consciousness.

This drawing began with an idea for a pose that I had. It doesn't quite equate with the idea that I had it my head because I wanted the create to be using his hand as though it was a mask for his face. I can't explain it in words. xD The perspective went a little wonky on his hand. o_O

Anyway, I just loved this creature's head design so much after I inked it that I was compelled to upload it. *u* I don't know, his wrinkly lips or massive claws just make me all fuzzy inside.

He doesn't have feet. I wanted it to look like he was a living stalagmite.

Grendeles Modor

This is my second watercolor ever, and the first drawing I've inked! I have to read Beowulf for my Cultural Foundations class -- anyone who knows me here knows that I lovelovelovelove Beowulf!

When we were reading it, I was inspired to draw my vision of Grendel's mother (that's what the title means). Unfortunately I rushed with my inking process, and the painting process too, so it's not as good as I had hoped. But I got to experiment a lot with watercolors and I liked them A LOT. More to come!

I tried to keep her design both seductive and feminine, with bits of fantasy and wrath thrown in. The poem doesn't describe her much, but we know that she is associated with serpents (a Christian symbol) and that she is very powerful. The movie portrayed her using Angelina Jolie.

Lament: Lines

This is NOT for coloring.

These are the lines for a watercolor creature I'm going to paint. C: The working title for this is "Lament," kind of because I tried to work in themes of being an outsider, being sinful, etc. into the design of the creature. Really, though, it doesn't make sense for me to title it because what I drew is what was in my head, and that really didn't have a theme until I gave it one.

The actual drawing has the whole hand in the foreground, but I have to use a portable scanner and it cannot pick up the rest of the hand. :C

Drawn in pencil first, then inked with a Prismacolor brush-pen. The process took me about 3.5 hours, and it's going to be my third watercolor ever!

This is a suggestion that I thought of while I was trying to fall asleep. So today I used my limited internet time to use Google Chrome's HTML editor and Photoshop to whip up this quick visual suggestion. I watch a lot of deviants who keep Livestream journals (myself included), and I know a lot of people also make quick announcements using journals. Unfortunately, if you watch a ton of deviants, some of those messages may get lost rather quickly. With deviousFeed, which I'm suggesting, you'd be able to make quick announcements akin to tweets, but only for use on deviantART. Whereas tweets can come from all over and be shared, this deviousFeed would only be viewed by your watchers or people who happen to see them on your profile.

The idea is that it will separate quick things from journals or news. There would have to be a character limit, obviously. A lot of what you need to know about how it works is in the deviation above. What do you think?

I was also considering making a Google Chrome extension for this. The problem is that I don't know how.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about this!

I know that I did include that in my suggestion, but I think free is better. It would ultimately be up to the staff if they ever implemented something like this.

Could you comment on feeds?

No.

People will just spam it.

Well of course, people spam journals and polls too. But really, a character limit for "feeds" would need to be in place. Additionally, a posting flood limit would need to be in place, like with commenting if you post more than x comments in y time. It would need to be a lot stricter than that restriction, but you get the point.

Yes it isn't.
For one thing, you shouldn't hold back change -- dA is completely different from them. I don't have a Facebook or Twitter, so forgive me if I'm wrong: Statuses on Facebook are your main method of spreading things there. People share, like (), and comment on them, and so it becomes the most common method of communication on Facebook. Tweets are literally the only thing you can use on Twitter, and they can come from many places (like if you tweet an article or something). Tweets can be shared and stuff. My suggestion is just a supplement to communication here: it is one-way, from you TO your watchers. They can't comment or share your feeds because this system is literally only for making short announcements. This would not replace journals, polls, art, or community here.

About a week ago, ~creativsis sent me a note, and she was wondering if I could create an emote based off of this phrase, "Don't stutter for I may fall between your words." I immediately thought that that phrase would be better if it were in a typographic piece, and she agreed, so I went along and messed around till I got this. ouo She told me that this would be directed towards liars and people who manipulate their words.

I would love to practice my typography more, since I do love looking at how other people do it. Perhaps over my vacation () I'll get to practice more. |D

Anyway, I am pretty happy with how this turned out. I like the simplicity of it; my other idea was to have some orange lines weaving in and out of the words ("between"), but this disrupted the flow and messed up the minimalistic approach to this piece.

I made this during my Livestream session tonight! It was a request placed by =TheMasterNeko and =BlissfullySarcastic in unison, and I claim no responsibility for the content of this emote.

But let me explain if you don't get it~
=TheMasterNeko wanted an emoticon (dark red) of himself with headphones. Red is a hard color to show contrast with. ;n;
And then =BlissfullySarcastic wanted him to be horny.

And then they both (I think) wanted him to be horny towards =BlissfullySarcastic.

And one of them wanted drool and the rest I did myself. It was good fun, and awesome practice for my facial expressions. ouo

This is for `PurpelBlur's emoticon revival contest, part three!
Our job was to revamp our old emote based on feedback we've received from part two of the contest (which was for participants to give critiques on emotes). I incorporated a lot of feedback if you can tell. xD Not only did I rely on the awesome comments I got from the contest participants, I also based my updates on what others have told me since I submitted the old emote. I knew I wanted the clouds and more background for context, and I completely changed the sun. I noticed that my skills have really improved since March of this year! That's a 9 month difference right there!

I am so happy with this, I cannot even tell you. ;u; Even if I had to make it fade to white because I couldn't make it loop, that's fine because this took a LOT of work to pump out in two days, and I am so excited about how it looks!

I would love to hear your thoughts. What do you think of the improvement? c: Good luck to all of the participants in `PurpelBlur's contest! I would like to thank =jaichizuru and =litecrush for dealing with my link spam while this was in Sta.sh to get their feedback.
