Another Warhammer 40k inspired picture and my first use of Zbrush and making UV maps for anything more complex than a box. Quite a learning experience!

A Christmassy advertising pic for Virgin, the left hand side is blank for their own text to be placed in. As usual these days, the text was done in Cinema 4D and the rest in PS and Illustrator.

I've just spent a few days putting my system back together after a hard drive physically broke (Out of 6 of them it had to be my system drive!). A warning to speed enthusiasts out there, Western Digital Raptors might be fast but you pay in terms of reliability...

I'm pleased how this turned out, it's the first non work based picture I've had the time to do for ages. It's good to get back to basics now and then and do some proper photo manipping.

I am releasing this updated version of Athena to celebrate it being on the cover of this month's Digit magazine: [link] Basically I just replaced a few details I was unhappy with, tightened up the brushing, fiddled with the lighting and colours and improved the quality of some of the bits that had gone a bit blurry at the back. I consider it a better version anyway. Just been to Canada for a bit and so not really active in making new stuff but I have a bunch of ideas to start working on and a few more magazine thingies coming up.

The spiritual sucessor to 'only' : [link] , I know that some people will like it because of its experimental nature and some will hate it because it doesn't really fall into the 'eye candy category'. I enjoyed making it though, and enjoyed playing around with a new style... old and musty is how I see it :}

You wouldn't believe quite how much Photoshop twiddling went into making some of those shapes, at one point it looked like a giant cartoon sydney opera house and later it was some sort of medieval bird carving. The original photo was part of a knife I think, but those bendy things that look like blades were actually made out of part of the handle. Weird.

After the rather muted tones of 'never' I felt like going a bit overboard in the other direction and produce something really bright and cheerful. It's the first time in a while that I've produced something purely in Photoshop without some photo or render as a starting point (a few of the extra details around the edge were done in Illustrator though).

I also wanted to make something like this for DC's Deluxe packs as the whole feel of deluxe was colourful and vibrant in my mind. It would have been a shame not to have at least one eye candy piece there :}

A piece produced on a commission for Computer Arts Projects typography issue. They basically wanted a copy of 'Pimp' with this lettering instead, so that's what I did while updating the style slightly. It was a bit of a rush as I basically had 2 evenings to do it but I am pleased with the result, I think it's technically a lot better than Pimp. Original size A4 @ 300dpi, I'll make it a print soon.

Type tips

A second illustration produced on commission for the Computer Arts Projects typography issue, which came out today. In style it had to follow my first picture 'Type', although I was allowed to stray further from the style of 'Pimp' in terms of colours and layout. I also had to leave a large space in the bottom right for text and include certain typographical elements, like the keyboard, typewriter and stencils. Again I worked to a very short deadline and although the lettering may look very similar to that in 'Type' nothing is actually recycled from it. Anyway it looks nice in the mag so I'm pleased with the result, the colours bothered me for a while but I prefer them to the first picture now.

All I can say is... I don't get to choose the words! Or the style for that matter, but I managed to get away with trying some new stuff this time anyway.

This is for the front cover of this month's Digital Arts magazine, an issue all about typography.

I spent a long time choosing the actual shape of the letters for this to get some really nice curvy text. I'm a complete sucker for the whole bright pink + green combo by the way. It shouldn't work but it does...

Focus had to be all on one side as well so it could be used as the cover if necessary. Not sure when the mags out, I really hope one of the 101 ideas isn't about not stealing Firefox's colour scheme...

I was looking at cugars amazing abstracts the other day and it inspired me to have a go at making a pure abstract again. Oddly enough I did this with an old poser render I found, and a lot of messing it about in Photoshop. I was picturing some sort of balrog type thing, a thing of fire deep underground, but to be honest it's just a few shapes I liked.

Damn... just updated the image for my iD very slightly, didn't know it told people about updates. I was just changing the colour a little bit so it blended in with the background better, but then I realised that the shades of green for the 2 Deviantart skins are very slightly different :/ So if you use the minimal skin like me it now looks fine :} If you use the Version 2 skin it looks poop :{ I thought about making it a transparent gif but I think the edges are too subtle to get any decent blending with a gif. Bah! why do they have to use different colours @_@

When I found some great stock photos from [link] I had lots of ideas for pieces, but the 'Slaughter Pack' photos won me over I know it's a bit gruesome but I was watching 'The Thing' recently and felt it was time for an 'alien-coming-out-of-head' piece. thought it would, but I didn't realise how hard it is to make someone look like they have a painted face :/ Probably

my most advanced photo-manip yet, I think I was lucky finding relevant photos. However looking back some were

probably bad choices as they were incredibly difficult to blend, and in the case of the mouth, not possible to get the

Made this piece for Pack 12 [EVOLUTION] of Depthcore: [link] which I have just joined (go read my journal or site for more info about that ).

A bit rushed to make it in time, I started off with the most pathetically simple 3D render, testament to my non-existant 3D skills, and buggered it hard in Photoshop till it looked like this, my pc almost exploding along the way. This is half-size, there is a full res one on my site for anyone interested :}

I was playing around with a photo of a car earlier, and somehow it mutated into this :/ I've had a few ideas for 'proper' pieces recently, i.e. ones that take more than a couple of hours like this, but have not felt like committing to one yet. I was a bit bored so I started playing around with the photo of the car I used for my last piece and it became this. I enjoy making these 2d abstracts but never know how to finish them.. ah well. Oh and yes, the *eye* is back :}

Just noticed that because I did it in one sitting and photoshop is still open, I have a few snapshots with earlier versions of the piece. After I finish doing this I will string them together and upload so anyone who is interested can see the rubbish way I put this piece together

I've been a bit busy recently and have had this sitting about on my computer half finished for a week or two now. I made the main part out of 2 brilliant photos from [link] which I had used months ago to make 2 other pieces [Strange and Peculiar]. Anyway I couldn't decide how to finish it at all so I just added loads of random crap on top and hoped it would become so confusing that people would get a headache and not bother criticising it. I like what I started out with though so maybe I will make something else based on it in the future. So yeah, no 3D progs or any of that stuff, viva la 2D, up with photos, down with renders etc etc

Something I've had sitting about on my pc for a couple of weeks now and forgot about. I think it's the 4th of so piece to be made from a render by *likuid, taken from the Depthcore battlezone (the other 3 you can go see in the Infinity pack [link]). I wanted to do a slightly illustratrive picture while keeping abstract elements, and this idea jumped out at me as soon as I saw the render.

Possibly my least favourite from the latest Depthcore pack, possibly because I feel it lacks depth... and it's not shiny enough ;} Oddly enough it was the one that brought my pc closer to the brink of destruction that any of the others.... I actually cropped it down quite a lot at the end and it had a vast number of layers. Anyway go visit depthcore, there's a lot of fantastic stuff there, a lot of which won't appear on here.

A relatively quick piece for me (2 evenings), it is probably my favourite from the last Depthcore pack. Sometimes it helps to stop thinking about what a picture is going to end up looking like and just make it up as you go along, this piece had 0 planning. Probably my last release for a short while, I'm pleased that I managed to do a picture with a lot of white space at last, rather than relying on vibrant colours. Illustrator and Photoshop used, I spent a boring hour or two tracing around bird photos with the pen tool... I hope I'll be able to use them again some time Even so I used a fair number of sources for the bird pics. I have enjoyed experimenting with this style, but for a while I'm going to try something new.

The first of my releases for Depthcore pack 15 [Habitat] , go take a look at [link] (although there seem to be a couple of problems with the site at the moment - maybe it's having trouble coping with the 180+ submissions!).

This started off as an experiment with some new Photoshop techniques, just playing about with a photo of a car wing mirror, and went on to produce this and Chrysalis [coming soon]. I intend to write a tutorial about photoshop abstracting soon and its advantages (and disadvantages) compared to 3D abstract. In the meantime I'll have a bit of a rant in my journal, and sort out an update for my site... or something.

A collaboration with , he provided this render: [link] and although I thought it would be easy to add a bit of fancy lighting and typo and produce an accomplished picture, I decided to try some new techniques out in Photoshop and transform it into something different. I had trouble deciding whether to have them shooting up out of the water or diving into it, but I think this worked best in the end. A tutorial for this will appear at some point.

Did this months ago, I think I spent half the time fiddling with the colours... looking at it now I think they're not quite as cohesive as I would normally do, but in this case the seperate parts of the picture really needed to stand out. I used a similiar technique to 'orchid', and a car wing mirror as a starting image (again). Photoshop only.

I'm just submitting this to draw more attention to the new Depthcore pack which has just been released (nothing from me though). I started this months ago and then my computer broke so I was never able to finish it. I wanted to do a lot more work on the edges and sort out a few of the details and typo but I can't be bothered now the pack has been released. Go look at the new pack because I think it has some great stuff (caustic and skr33ch especially).
