Project 5! And more strange things turning up here in this place. Also, I stumbled over a somewhat different approach to the digital coloring part of this process, one that relies way more heavily on the watercolor original, and not quite so much on steamrollering over it. I hope it helps freshen this illustration up a little bit!

Edit note - wow the thumbnail version of this looks really, really gross. is anyone else having this problem with their image uploads, or know any way to fix it?

I was bad and didn't post any of the last piece of this project here, so I'm going to try and be a bit more on the ball with Project 4 = =;. Still poking at this technique and trying to get it to even out. So far though, I feel like this one came out pretty! I wasn't sure if the watercolor spills were going to work out or not, but I think I like what they wound up doing : 3

This is the final "panel" for a short story about two lovers, a meteor shower, and a really really long walk to find each other again. It's based on the folktale The Princess and the Cowherd : >

The jars are made out of something that lets out light a little slower than it lets it in, so they glow for a while. It's helpful, because it doesn't get very bright here, even when the sun is out.

These lightbulbs have a very simple AI that tells them to drift over to stuff, and be helpfully shiny. Since they don't know if other lightbulbs are around, they tend to swarm.

I really enjoy working on the stuff for Anime USA, it's always a lot of fun, and pretty challenging. I'm not very good at all with drawing text, but I thought whatever came of it, at least it would look more natural than superimposing a computer font. My art's usually to squishy to hold up next to that.

This year's theme is sort of a cirque/carnival kind of deal. There'll be two more flyers kind of along these lines, and a program book cover. This year's look for the mascot Kaede (upper left) was designed by Kevin Bolk, and you can see the rest of her at [link]

Obnoxious friend-bird problems are the best kinds of problems! I'onno, it's simple, but it was fun. I haven't used Open Canvas in a long time. I couldn't think about what my hands were doing, or I'd goof the hotkeys. Those are the worst kinds of problems, especially when you don't believe in toolbars.

Everything about this picture was an accident. Im still surprised it even happened. I've been listening to all of the "6" remixes for days; that probably had something to do with it. Then there was a large quantity of geese that made me extremely cross, but that is a story for another day.

The point is orange makes everything better. And AVTechNO!.

It's an older story, and frankly parts of it don't make a whole lot of sense. But Kenji Miyazawa's "Night on the Galactic Railroad" is one of my favorites, and i've been meaning to make something inspired from it for too long. I referenced both the book and the animation in this illustration, and I highly recommend checking them both out sometime. Just keep the tissues handy.

I mean it. It will make you cry. Buckets.

This was an unexpected exercise in self control! Negative space always makes me nervous. I tried throwing all kinds of things in there to fill it up, but it would always get needlessly repetitive, noisy, and crowded. Which... happen to be all the things I like to inflict on my art.

This is what I did aaaaaaaaall Spring break! It was so nice to just sit and work at it for days and days and days without interruption. I ate 3 boxes of cereal at some point during this spell. I'm a little confused that it's almost Tuesday?

This is the second-to-last piece in my Senior Thesis, which is going to be about 8 illustrations from what would hopefully one day be an original children's book called "Monster Soup". This one turned out to be more critical than I expected, a lot of problems I was having with the technique I'm using started working themselves out early into the process. Local color in tiny areas is getting easier! And this is good, because the last one is going to be real, real, real BUSY.

I used to paint sharky-faces on my model rockets at space camp. Only they never came out right, because I did it by masking off a bald nose-cone with tape and then allowing the people with the spray-paint to do the job.. which it always came out way too heavy, so when the masking tape was removed, it looked like 'fierce bleeding face zombie shark sky rocket from the dark side of your own personal hell.'

Then I put glitter inside the parachute. fanceeeeeeeeeeey rain of spawkaaaallllllls!

But ships/planes/objects in general with eyes make me happy. So do jets, although I have an extremely limited understanding of them. And I don't think anybody wears those goggles in them, but i like them as much as sharky-faces, so it had to be so. This is going to be a promotional flyer for Anime USA 2011, which I hope I can actually make it to, instead of getting massively homeworked in the face.

Before starting this illustration, I tried working up color digitally from a grayscale image. That's sorta turned backwards now, with local color being developed in traditional media, and then using photoshop as a means to enhance the tone, colors, and details only where necessary. It takes forever. Seriously it does, this took over 60 hours to complete.

I'm currently on my third piece for this project, and the process has come a long way. I'll be excited to share that one when it's ready!

More process for my Senior Project! I've used ink and graphite to build up marks before adding digital color, but I needed to see if I could get watercolor in on the mix. I'm trying to use digital media now only to add local color and tiny touches to my work, but I haven't had a whole lot of time to test it out. Honestly, I needed more time with this.. but! gotta switch gears and keep moving. No sleep yet. Durnit!

So this should not have taken as long as it did. Vacation is not relaxing o_O. SO UNPRODUCTIVE! *flings something heavy* I wanted to make some Christmas presents this year for some peoples. Better late than later.

this one's for , of her character Noah and his stalker, who currently has no name, and we're still prodding at her design. This is me finally throwing a few ideas on paper to go with round one = =;;; gaaaaah so sloooow....

What we know so far is she's sorta old fashioned, and not very outgoing. She converses with Noah via gifts of home baked cookies, mostly, and sometimes uses words too.

Feeding seagulls is dangerous if you're not expecting it. Anyone who's mistakenly tried to eat a sandwich/bag of chips by a waterfront has experienced something like this.

So.. I'm still getting used to drawing/coloring inside Photoshop CS. There's a hotkey I frequently trip over that ZOOMS me into parts of the composition. For this page, it's favorite place was the section where all of the seagulls are bunched together. It filled my screen with concentrated derp and scared me out of my chair the first time it happened.

I think I'll make it into a wallpaper.

I also learned a lot about llamas and their eyelashes! I have some process doodles of them and their riding gear, and a whole page of seagulls. Which really came in handy.

It was (for some reason) important to me to make absolute sure that the seagull would be in no way anthropomorphic. I just wanted it to radiate derp, to contrast with it's somehow being extremely informed. Secretly I believe the seagulls in this world are organized, and powerful.

I don't know why Harlow can understand them. Perhaps, like me, he's just sleep deprived and all of this is a bizarre hallucination brought on by being overworked and underfed.

I got familiar with cobblestones for this project. The character Ghost (blondie) is roughly based off of a very old character of mine named Kenko, who largely serves the exact same purpose: appear, do something obnoxious, get schooled, somehow survive, learn nothing, repeat.

The difference is Kenko has lil' girlfriend, which means he occasionally does something chivalrous. Ghost is just a butthole.

Finals are done! So is traveling! Super break-time projects go! Also I can finally get back to doodling.. I sorta let my comics final run off with that agenda. Good job = =;.

So um.. sea.. gulls. Seagulls! yes. This is.. inspired by.. a true... story?? er... : D;;; No, not really. I just tried to have a good time with it. BRB with rest of pages, there's just 6.
