I sell the originals, not prints, so I usually re-draw characters as they're sold. I draw them during conventions and they tend to get snatched up right away, so I don't get a chance to scan them. But with Fan Expo Vancouver this weekend and my stock dwindling, decided to draw a new batch at home. <br /><br />And yes, I re-use poses sometimes... but some characters look completely different each time I draw them. I was then asked to draw a picture for Arino's live birthday challenge. Here's that pic! The contents of the picture was completely up to me, and I wanted to do something with the staff that shows how much history GCCX has. I was then asked to draw a picture for Arino's live birthday challenge. Here's that pic! Retro Game Master) starring comedian Shinya Arino. They're <a class="external" href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://kotaku.com/5837877/meet-the-retro-game-master">coming to LA and San Francisco</a> this Friday for a special episode, and though I can't be there, I'm getting someone to print this out as a poster so it could be given to them as a gift. I'm a big fan of the show so there are several inside jokes here. For example, the motorcycle is the one from the SEGA arcade game "Hang-On."<br /><br />My ulterior motive is to have my art on the show.<br /><br />("Abunai", when exclaimed, means danger!/look out!/careful! and is practically Arino's catchphrase.)<br /><br /><b>UPDATE (Oct 10, 2011):</b> My art got on the show!             <description><![CDATA[ A quick picture I did for <a class="external" href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Center_CX">Game Center CX</a> (a.k.a. Retro Game Master) starring comedian Shinya Arino. They're <a class="external" href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://kotaku.com/5837877/meet-the-retro-game-master">coming to LA and San Francisco</a> this Friday for a special episode, and though I can't be there, I'm getting someone to print this out as a poster so it could be given to them as a gift. I'm a big fan of the show so there are several inside jokes here. This is my WINNING entry! Thanks, UDON and Capcom!</b> I predicted there would be many fierce battles and large group pictures entered to the contest, so I wanted to depict simple quiet scenes.<br /><br />I love Proto Man and I wanted to depict the scene at the end of Mega Man 3 where he saves the unconscious Mega Man from the falling fortress. I was watching <a class="external" href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Band_of_Brothers_%28TV_miniseries%29">Band of Brothers</a> at the time and thought a WW2 US military-themed pic would be neat, and especially liked the idea of Proto Man looking like the <a class="external" href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://www.thefanboyseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Ultimate-Captain-America.jpg">WW2-era Captain America</a>.<br /><br />I was surprised this was picked because I spent the least amount of time on it (2 hours max) and is the least refined, but hey, sometimes a 5-minute sketch can end up looking better than something you spent hours on. A huge version of this hangs outside their Gastown location, so if you're in the area, go see!<br /><br />This turned out oddly symmetrical and I wasn't even planning it that way. His art is cool, but his writing is even better. Admired American animation.<br /><br />BOTTOM ROW:<br /><br /><b><i>ukiyo-e</i> art</b> - a.k.a. Japanese woodblock prints. Ones by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (pictured) in particular, with his macabre subject matter.<br /><br /><b>"Okami"</b> - Artistically innovative game by CAPCOM that somehow managed to make 3D models look like <i>sumi-e</i> art. Made me want to incorporate ancient Japanese art styles into my own.<br /><br /><b>"THE SIMPSONS"</b> - Watched it even when I was too young to understand the jokes. I've been meaning to do fanart again for years now but never got around to it until now!<br /><br />From my favourite to least favourite game: MI2, MI, TMI, CMI, EMI. I almost didn't want to include EMI Guybrush, but I had to be fair.<br /><br />My favourite design is his MI2 look so he gets featured prominently at the top. This was my most time-consuming piece, and my least favourite. There are a lot of things that bug me about this. Too happy, too visually clean, and the perspective still looks off to me. I was asked to draw the characters in their film outfits, but it was up to me whether to keep the hairstyles or not. I opted to keep the TV series hairstyles, except for Yue's because I liked her film hair. I'm not sure why I was asked to draw them since none of them appear in the prequel comic I worked on."<br /><br />Maybe they mistakingly thought I was working on the film adaptation comic instead?<br /><br />I like the film costumes a lot, and it was fun drawing the TV versions in the film outfits. It only hit me yesterday that a Norman Rockwell version would be perfect. Except, well...Rockwell was a master of painting, anatomy and giving life to his figures, and I am not. I tried my best though, and took full advantage of my access to a huge Cintiq.<br /><br />Homer looks frightening in this. Homer always looks frightening out of his element.<br /><br />This was very hard. Rockwell&#039;s style is nearly the exact opposite of mine. Yes, a lot of artists do that when they do MGS fanart, but I guess we can&#039;t resist. It&#039;s a fun exercise in using black and white.<br /><br />The battle with Sniper Wolf is <i>kind of</i> an "ice level"...but since the entire game is like one big ice level, does it count? Regardless, MGS deserves special recognition as being one of few video games that takes place during snowy weather. Plus I wanted to draw her &#039;cause she&#039;s cool.<br /><br />This is a desktop wallpaper formatted for widescreen. Go ahead and hit Download to get the big version!<br /><br />At first I was going to depict Mega Man fighting triumphantly against Ice Man, but I figured there&#039;s been enough art of Mega Man kicking butt and let&#039;s face it -- anyone who&#039;s played this game has seen him DIE more often than triumph.<br /><br />Ice Man is one of the more harmless-looking Robot Masters.
