This is a 3D render produced in Modo. A high contrast black & white texture was used for micro-polygonal displacement of a simple sphere, which produced true 3D surface relief.

I composited a NASA image of Saturn's moon Enceladus using an alpha channel (also rendered in Modo) to represent the natural features of the moon (which isn't necessarily the Earth's moon). The source image can be found here: [link]

The birds were done with some "bird brushes" I made some time ago.

This image bears a definite resemblance to a painting done by Syd Mead, who is of course a major inspiration ]]>

However, few subjects beg for a high res image as much as the immense Xeelee structure at the heart of Stephen Baxter's mind-stretching epic book "Ring". [link]

And few subjects are as challenging to visualize. A full appreciation is only possible from reading the novel, but you may notice there are entire galaxies that appear in front of the Ring. This is due to the immense scale of the artifact - it is as wide as a hundred galaxies.

The structure is composed of a single strand of "string" - a defect in space-time - that is being woven from the crushed debris of countless whole galaxies. The mysterious Xeelee have been working on this project for quite some time - for several billion years in fact.

What is the purpose of such a monstrous construction? The Xeelee intend to use the Ring to initiate a "Kerr Metric" [link] - in effect a doorway that exits the Universe. You may wonder at the reaons they undertake such a task, but I won't spoil the book!

So who are the Xeelee? They are the oldest sentient race in the Universe - and one of its greatest mysteries. But as one character states with regard to the Ring: "...that they have the audacity to even dream of such a device!"

Incidentally, those small points of light in the background aren't stars. The Ring occupies an immense empty void, and those lights back there are whole galaxies on the far side...

The scene was made by camera mapping 3 separate paintings onto low-polygon geometry. There is a painting for the environment, another for the ship, and a third for the weird pyramids in the background. Each painting was projected from a separate camera to make the final scene.

As for the title, "Vastator" (Latin) is a mythological reference to the proverbial "Destroyer of Worlds" I've come across in science fiction on occasion. "Coptotermes Vastator" is a nasty breed of termite, and the word has been used extensively in naming various destructive species. ]]>

I made some simple geometry, did a painting on a rendered frame, and then projected the painting back onto the scene.

I then placed a 2nd camera and did a slight move. Total working time was about 4 hours.

BTW I've never uploaded an animation - so I hope it actually works ]]>

The inspiration for this image is my ongoing fascination with off-shore oil platforms.

This is a 3D scene that I painted into to add a lot of the fine details (like the tiny lights, astronauts, and distant ships).

The 3D was modeled and rendered using Lightwave 3D. The textures were painted in Photoshop. ]]>

Painting the clouds was a nightmarish process that required numerous test renders to see the effect when lit in 3D, then jump back to Photoshop and tweak it some more. But I wanted to break away from using the cloud map that is very prevalent in a lot of 3D planet art.

Incidentally, the shadows cast by the clouds are actual raytraced shadows, and the red shift at the terminator is a result of some complex 3D shader work. No matter where the "Sun" is, the color shift into the shadow remains accurate. ]]>

It's fairly simple - you just make a selection however you like, go to the Paths menu, make a "work path" and save the path. Then you go to "Edit>define custom shape and it saves it in your menu (just like making a brush or pattern.

So... why custom shapes? Try it out and you'll see almost immediately. This mountain took me about 5 minutes!

Important safety tip: Make sure to save your shapes. I made a few that were too complex, Photoshop crashed as a result, and I lost what I had done since my last save of my presets. ]]>
