A high contrast black &amp; white texture was used for micro-polygonal displacement of a simple sphere, which produced true 3D surface relief.<br /><br />I composited a NASA image of Saturn's moon Enceladus using an alpha channel (also rendered in Modo) to represent the natural features of the moon (which isn't necessarily the Earth's moon). But I haven't posted anything for a while so here it is, for better or worse!<br /><br />Custom shapes are an incredible time saver. It's actually a model I made for fun, but it seemed to lend itself to the game so I threw it into the mix and after a lot of development - and a reduction in its size - it became our main crew transport. A full appreciation is only possible from reading the novel, but you may notice there are entire galaxies that appear in front of the Ring. This is due to the immense scale of the artifact - it is as wide as a hundred galaxies.<br /><br />The structure is composed of a single strand of "string" - a defect in space-time - that is being woven from the crushed debris of countless whole galaxies. The mysterious Xeelee have been working on this project for quite some time - for several billion years in fact.<br /><br />What is the purpose of such a monstrous construction? The Xeelee intend to use the Ring to initiate a "Kerr Metric" <a class="external" href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerr_Metric">[link]</a> - in effect a doorway that exits the Universe. You may wonder at the reaons they undertake such a task, but I won't spoil the book! <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/biggrin.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/><br /><br />So who are the Xeelee? They are the oldest sentient race in the Universe - and one of its greatest mysteries. No photos, nothing - that was the point of the exercise.<br /><br />Painting the clouds was a nightmarish process that required numerous test renders to see the effect when lit in 3D, then jump back to Photoshop and tweak it some more. But I wanted to break away from using the cloud map that is very prevalent in a lot of 3D planet art.<br /><br />Incidentally, the shadows cast by the clouds are actual raytraced shadows, and the red shift at the terminator is a result of some complex 3D shader work. Then you go to "Edit&gt;define custom shape and it saves it in your menu (just like making a brush or pattern.<br /><br />So... why custom shapes? Try it out and you'll see almost immediately. This mountain took me about 5 minutes! <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/e/eyepopping.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=":eyepopping:" title="Eyepopping"/><br /><br />Important safety tip: Make sure to save your shapes.
