Ever since I stumbled upon the incredible digital paintings by Japanese illustrator Hi aka Xhixix, I've wanted to recreate his works in photo form (much like the Brian Viveros tribute I did last year). The hardest part was finding a model that I felt looked close enough to the painting. I searched all over the Internet trying to find a male model with the right hair and facial structure within Southern California. I had pretty much given up, until I met Jacob through his band who had hired me to photograph their new promos. I felt like I struck gold. I didn't hesitate to ask him to help me with this shoot, and I couldn't be more excited with the results. The mold on his face was created using dry oatmeal stuck on with liquid latex and painted over with a grease makeup combo of white and green.

We explored the abandoned zoo in LA, made adventure buddies with some kids that were wandering around, climbed on top of the bear caves while the Shakespeare in the Park performance went on in the background, and mowed some In-N-Out burgers afterwards. I've been doing design work for these guys over the last couple years but this was our first time finally getting to meet in person. ^{A few months ago, Preston of Vessel Drums had me come out to White Horse Studios to shoot some photos of one of his drumkits being used during a video session with Miss Erika Davies. My fellow photog friends, Kevin and Rebecca Joelson, have been working on this awesome project called San Diego Sound System -- a new online music show featuring local talents in the San Diego scene (you can watch the pilot video here on Vimeo). Everything these two do is nothing short of pure gold, so I was excited to watch them work and even more excited when they put me to work shooting some video clips for Miss Erika's session (watch it here). I was really inspired by Sylvia Ji's "Shapeshifter" series last year, but never got around to creating my own photographic rendition of "Red Caribou". So when brainstorming makeup ideas, I was immediately drawn back to the gorgeous red tribal face paintings featured in her works.

After I had coated my face in lipstick and shed a few tears putting these contact lenses in, I realized I left my Cyber Syncs in my boyfriend's car and wouldn't be able to use my lights. Rather than postpone this idea after all the hardwork I already invested, I decided to manipulate all natural light like the good ol' days! And actually, I'm glad I didn't use strobes. I couldn't be happier with the way these came out!</sup>

^{Hannah and I have been planning to shoot together ever since we met on the Haste the Day farewell tour at the beginning of the year, and we FINALLY made it happen yesterday. I stumbled upon this painting by Brian Viveros and immediately knew I needed to replicate it with Hannah. I don't think she could have been any more perfect for this shoot.}
