Padmé Amidala and her man, after he either fell from grace or grew a pair, depending on your interpretation. I just really like this outfit of hers, and I haven't done enough art of either of these two.

I tried a slightly different technique again - I used grey paper, and painted the white and black parts with acrylic before layering on the pencil. I'm quite pleased with the result. I hope you like it, too!

Jagged Fel

Jagged Fel, a character from the Star Wars novels; nephew of Wedge Antilles and arguably the best pilot in the galaxy.

I used a ton of references, but the only ones still recognisable are the clawcraft illustration and the Imperial symbol. Jag is a combination of lots of references, and I'm really really happy how his portrait turned out. He's got a scar and a white streak in his hair above his right temple, which is always awkward to draw. The whole thing is drawn and put together freehand. I hope you like it!

Tatooine Ghosts

The lovely Princess Leia during, or maybe looking back on, her time in Jabba's Palace. I love her expression and the lighting in this shot, so I had to draw it. At the bottom, you have the palace itself.

I used watercolour, colour pencils, and white gel pen. The details on the margin are done with copper gel pen, but they're hard to see in the scan.

It's sketch card size, so 2.5 x 3.5". My scanner tends to destroy and blur the really tiny details, but hopefully it looks good anyway.

Han Solo - miniature

Ever since I saw the miniature portraits by `Cataclysm-X, I've been meaning to try it out for myself. And I finally did!

Of course I had to pick Han. He's still the easiest to draw.

The drawing is about 2 x 3 cm. I don't have any really thin mechanical pencils, only a 0.5 HB, so I used mostly my wooden ones. You can see one of them in the picture. It involved a lot of sharpening!

Sword of the Jedi

Jaina Solo, ready for action. She's holding her lightsaber and what Wookieepedia told me is a frag grenade.

She's based on this image by `mjranum-stock: [link] - it just screamed "Sword of the Jedi" at me. I changed the weapons and took the high heels off her boots, and gave her proper armour. It's adapted from the armour that the Solo twins wear in the Invasion comics (I mostly used Jacen's, because it looks cooler). The background is just textures and the New Jedi Order symbol.

Another practice painting, learning about tone and colour. The lighting in this scene always makes for a challenge, and it's one of my favourite scenes ever anyway.

I didn't follow the reference exactly; I brought Han and Leia closer together and left the Ugnaught out of the background. So it's not a perfect rendition of the scene, but I actually like it better this way.

The Scoundrel and the Princess

Four months ago, I finally got some Bristol paper and started drawing this to see what it was like. This "paper test" took a bit longer than anticipated and surprised even me with the result, but here it is. It's a rendition of one of my favourite scenes - Han and Leia in the Falcon's hold. I really enjoyed drawing this and didn't want to stop, but it just got to the point where I knew I'd ruin it if I kept going. Overall I'd say this was definitely a challenge, but an enjoyable one, and I really like the paper.

So there we are, I hope you like this one!

South Passage

Something quick while I'm working on my longer projects. It was mostly an attempt at recording what I was doing in Photoshop; unfortunately, the first few tries didn't work at all, so no video this time around. But I learned a lot and I think I have it figured out for next time.

In the meantime, enjoy Han and Leia arguing! I sketched and painted it freehand, so it's far from perfect, but it's one of my favourite scenes so I'm uploading it anyway. Hope you like it!

Story Time redux

A new take on "Story Time", for a fic cover. I've cropped it, so you can't see it properly here, but in the background is a big painting of Padmé. It appears in the Solo apartment in the graphic novel adaptation of "The Last Command", and I thought it was perfect for this picture, having Padmé kind of there in the background.

Anyway. This is me trying out a simpler, less realistic style, to fit with the illustrations I've been doing. I'm happy with it; I think little Anakin is my favourite, he's so adorable. I hope you like it as well.

Captain Solo

Sooo I got distracted and wanted to see if I could do a quick painting instead of my usual painstakingly careful stuff. This took me about an hour, which is pretty quick for my standards, and I'm quite happy with it. So that's a win. And it's also Han, whom I haven't drawn/painted in a while, so - double win.

I love the expression in this shot. In over his head as usual and doing his best to snark it away. Enjoy!

Oh, and yes, I painted this from scratch. No tracing or painting over a reference.

The Renegade

My next attempt at digital painting: Kyp Durron, rogue Jedi Knight. He's another favourite of mine, with his smart-mouth, slightly belligerent attitude and disregard for authority. But of course. It's my second attempt at bringing him to life and I couldn't be happier with him.

SWC - Tenel Ka and Jacen

Finally able to upload this... it's been done for a while but my laptop, oh, don't get me started.

Jacen Solo and Tenel Ka Djo, with their competitive yet devoted relationship. Again, they have this oppositional thing going on where he's charming and out-going and a joker, and she's calm and collected and barely ever shows emotion. The queen and the scoundrel. Right here he's probably annoying her in his inimitably cheerful impossible-to-get-really-annoyed-by way, and she's pretending not to care.

Jacen's hairstyle is based on Anakin Skywalker's; canon depictions almost always have him with straight hair, which doesn't fit at all. In my head, he's a younger, slightly prettier, curlier version of Han. And he's wearing a Jedi shirt, but I wanted to give him a more scoundrely look. Tenel Ka's all warrior princess; I know there's no lizard-hide armour but there was no way I was drawing scales, and anyway, it's not like she'd wear that stuff all the time. She doesn't in the books. I tried to balance the "warrior" and "princess" aspects.

The quotes are from Star by Star by Troy Denning.

A Touch of Scoundrel

The painted version of this sketch. I'll be honest, I can't believe I actually did this. Looks like I'm getting the hang of digital painting after all. I'm ridiculously proud of this one.

But okay. Jagged Fel, warrior of the Hand and ridiculously talented flyboy. And the only one who can keep up with or even outfly Jaina. He's one of my favourite Star Wars characters, and I've come to love drawing him. For one thing, he almost always obliges me by turning out like I envisioned. So thank you Jag. That's a Chiss clawcraft in the background behind him, and my impression of Nirauan, including the Hand of Thrawn, at the bottom.

The title is from The Unifying Force, when Jaina tells Jag, "Maybe there is a touch of scoundrel in you, after all."

SWC - Tahiri and Anakin

The next in the series: Tahiri Veila and Anakin Solo. Opposites in almost every way, but complementary in all of those ways as well. Tahiri is chattering away, and Anakin is trying to figure out what to say.

This one took a bit longer because Tahiri's feet gave me all the problems I was expecting, and the poses gave me some I wasn't. And I changed Anakin's hairstyle halfway through because it looked far too tidy for a Solo, and also, it occurred to me that it would require far too much effort and hairspray to maintain, and Anakin being a warrior, he'd hardly have time for that. Yes, I tend to overthink things. As for Tahiri's hair, it was that short in Rebirth, so I drew it that way because all the other women's hair will be long, in this series, and variety is good. I think it all turned out okay in the end.

The quotes are from The Golden Globe by Nancy Richardson.

Valentine's Day gave me the idea to do a "Star Wars couples" series, because romance in the GFFA seems almost to require a certain amount of hate as well as love. Ergo, in my head, it's perfect for a love-themed series. Clearly.

This is the first one: Jaina Solo and Jagged Fel. I love this pairing because with his calm professionalism, Jag is the perfect foil to Jaina and her hotheaded stubbornness. So here they are. Jag is holding a datapad with flight scores; #1 is "Fel", #2 is "Solo", the rest is gibberish. So yes, he beat her, which is the reason for her expression.

The quotes are from Ylesia, by Walter Jon Williams. One of my favourite J/J moments, and one which helped cement Jag into his position as one of my favourite characters.

... you can blame a friend of mine (you know who you are!) for this new... uh, interest, it's not an obsession yet, I swear. Anyway. She told me I should play the KotOR games, I said "pfft, I don't do video games", a few days passed, I gave the first game a shot... well. Right now I'm in the middle of replaying KotOR II and have frequent discussions about it with my brother. Last night's discussion led to the idea for this, so you can blame my brother for encouraging me.

So yeah, there you have it, my first deviation of 2011 and my first ever game fan art. Atton and the Exile discuss Atton's very random scruples, prompted by the Exile's discussion with a trader - the first panel's dialogue is from the game. You don't have to point out all the anatomy issues; trust me, I know they're there, but after spending most of the day on this, I just couldn't face going back again to fix it all. Also, I had to eat.

Yes you will probably be seeing more of this kind of thing from me. Don't judge me...

And no, I don't know what schutta means, either.

Wartime Fashion

This arose from another conversation with my brother, when I laughed at him for giving his character pink armour, and he complained that all the decent armour just happens to be pink. I've played the game a bit more since then, and he has a point.

I'd imagine that at least some of the boys might share my brother's appraisal. Hence, comic time! Atton, Mical, and Bao-Dur discuss wartime fashion.

It took waaaay longer than intended. It just kept getting more and more detailed, and then I thought of more stuff and needed an extra panel, and yeah... But I think this one turned out better than my last attempt. Painting armour is not my favourite thing ever, as I learned, but at least it turned out okay. Bao-Dur's robotic hand is probably all kinds of wrong, but it's enough to get the idea, right? And I know Mical doesn't really look like Mical, but I swear that guy has no defining features whatsoever. And don't ask me what's going on with his hair because I ask myself that every time I see him.

The Sum Of Their Parts

This drawing was an accident. I meant to draw someone else altogether, but then he looked like Anakin Solo, so I went with that. So here they are - Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila, two of my favourite SW characters and one of my favourite pairings. The title comes from a quote from Ikrit, in Conquest:

"Remember - together, you are stronger than the sum of your parts."

So I wanted to illustrate that. On the bottom left you have Tahiri as a little girl, dressed in Tusken garb and riding on her pet bantha. On the right is Anakin as a boy, tinkering with something on the Millennium Falcon. And in the middle are Anakin and Tahiri in the middle of their game where they jump and fall together, using the Force to slow each other down.

Not many references this time - I'm trying to move away from using them. Anakin is based on the various covers of NJO books, because the guy I was drawing ended up looking like that. Like I said, I didn't mean to draw him. Everything else is mostly freehand. I did use my own hands as a reference when drawing their clasped ones, and let me tell you, it's not easy to draw while holding hands with yourself. But yeah, that's pretty much it.

Disclaimer: I have no idea if that's what bantha cubs look like; I couldn't find a reference so it's pretty much made up.

Han Solo again, this time in triplicate! I wanted to show the Han whom we meet in A New Hope in his various moments, and use some less common references. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I had to scan it in two halves, but I don't think you can really see the merge points. Praised be Photoshop! And I'll upload some up-close details later, as well.

Jaina Solo

After about a month, it's finally finished! It started as a portrait of Jaina Solo, but I ended up adding more and more to it. The guy to the left is Anakin, the other Jacen. The scene below shows Han and a younger Jaina, working at repairing the Falcon. I'm really happy with how this one turned out, actually - hope you like it as well!

A Nice Man

I did this a few months ago and never got around to scanning and merging it until now. Han and Leia again, who else. I was experimenting with a slightly different style - more clean lines and contrast, less shading - and this reference was perfect for it. I'm happy with the result and I hope you like it, too!

The edges are like that because I burned them; the few darker stains you see are burn marks, too. Yes, that was on purpose.

Invincible Together

Jacen comes and sits on the edge of her bed. He doesn't need to ask what's wrong, because he knowsbecause he is her twin, and he feels it, too.

So Jacen just strokes her hair until she starts to hurt a little less and finally falls asleep. He stays with her through the night because he knows that if he leaves, she'll wake and won't be able to sleep again.

And Jaina hears him whispering to her in her dreams, telling her that no one you love really ever has to dienot if you don't want them to. All you have to do is hold a place for them in your heart.

They can only keep wandering, alone together, trying not to be overwhelmed by their shock and despair. And Jaina senses through their twin bond that Jacen has other, more painful emotions. I didn't think I'd get another drawing done this fast, but this was just begging to be drawn today, so... I did! I love this shot of Han and Leia. It looks like the kind of image that you might capture if you interrupted them (or what you might find if you raided Threepio's memory banks...) - hence the title!

I want to dedicate this drawing to *manycomics - I meant to draw something to say thank-you properly, and since she's a fellow Han/Leia fan, this seemed to fit. I hope you like it, Laura!

Rebel Dream comic - 1 of 2

And now for something completely different! I've been told to try my hand at comics - by several people, over several years. I finally caved. This is the result, or rather, the first half of the result. The second page isn't quite finished yet.

It's a scene from the NJO novel Rebel Dream, by Aaron Allston, pp. 244-247. Jaina had turned her fighter around and headed back into the combat zone where Jagged Fel was facing far too many Vong ships on his own. She and Kyp, who was awesome as only Kyp can be, managed to save Jag's life, but against a direct order from Wedge, so she's in big trouble for it.

I've never done this comic thing before, so there's a good few things wrong with this. I think the second page is slightly better, which is encouraging. Jag is based, loosely, on comic pictures of Soontir Fel and Wedge Antilles. Jaina is based on Leia, also loosely. Tycho is based on Tycho and Chewie is based on Chewie; Anakin is based on no one; and Jacen is not based on any specific picture of Han because I don't need reference pictures for Han anymore.

Like I said, never done this before. I'd love - yes, love - to know what you think!

Finally, the second page of my illustration of a scene from the NJO novel Rebel Dream, by Aaron Allston, pp. 244-247. Jaina and Jag have gone into the conference room, and Jaina gets ready to face Jag's berating and accusations. Although of course, it doesn't quite go as she expects...

I think that again, the art gets better towards the end. It's been fun! I hope you guys like it, let me know what you think!

Closing the Doors

They did a challenge over on the JC forums where you had to do a drawing based on a given scene in your favourite SW movie. The Empire scene they gave me was "Closing The Doors", hence the title of the piece. Pretty sure you can figure out which scene it is.

The idea in the drawing is that Han and Luke are AWOL, and Leia can't do anything about it. I figured that "closing the doors" could also refer to her and Han's argument just prior to Han's crazy jaunt to rescue the kid, so I put them, arguing, on either door. And beyond the doors you've got Hoth and Leia's memories of the two guys, being shut out.

I'll admit that I'm not terribly happy with this one. It's too crowded, I think. It's also quite scribbly, but that was on purpose. You can only draw so much super-detailed stuff. That aspect is one that I like. I also like how Chewie and Threepio turned out.

Anyway, enough rambling, enjoy the drawing!

Jaina - The Jedi Mechanic

I'd noticed the similarities between Jaina Solo and Kaylee (of Firefly) before, and the other day I came across a picture of Jewel Staite that just seemed shout "Jaina". So, naturally, I had to give it a try. I've changed the references I used quite a bit, so she doesn't look like Jewel anymore, and tried to give her more Leia-like eyes.

So here you have Jaina in her Jedi robes at the top, in an X-Wing cockpit at the bottom left, and fixing some piece of machinery in the Falcon at bottom right. The background is supposed to be inside the hangar bay of Yavin 4's temple, so you can see outside over her shoulder.

I was drawing outside, so at one point the wind blew the drawing into my pencil and Jaina got a nice line across her hair. I think I managed to fix it okay, though. Overall, I'm really pleased with how this came out, so I hope you like it too!

Jagged and Jaina

College did get in the way, but I finally got this finished! Jagged Fel and Jaina Solo, in the galley of the Millennium Falcon, busy... ah, preparing food, at least officially. Since I couldn't get any references, the galley is inspired by and loosely based on the kitchen area of the VW van I spent my childhood holidays in. Except it didn't have a coffee machine, and don't ask me what the various parts do or are.

I didn't use any direct references here, and I think as a result Jag's waist may look a tiny bit narrow--but he's turned sideways, so it looks worse than it is. Honest. Overall, I'm really pleased with how it turned out, and I really hope that you guys like it!

Jacen and Han Solo

Another illustration. I'm quite happy with how this one turned out. The idea here is that they're on a space station trying to get off it, and it may look slightly like the Death Star because that's the only space station of which I remember the interior...

This is mainly from imagination, although I copied Han from a shot from Jedi and aged him as best I could (Jacen's about thirty here, his Dad ought to look a good bit older!). I don't like most of the book-cover representations of Jacen because he looks nothing like his parents on them, so I didn't copy from any of those. I tried making him resemble both Han and Leia, but I'm unsure how well that worked. I can kind of see Han, at least in his smirk, but that's about it... But I think he looks fairly friendly and full of "go get 'em" energy, which is what I was going for, so overall I'm pretty happy with this.

Drawn for a birthday present. I used a few pictures as reference, but this is basically my own interpretation of Thrawn. Hope I did him justice! The finished picture has a proper background and all, but I didn't get a chance to scan it in again.

Mirrorium Falcon

I made this a few years ago (2001, I think) when I was meant to be working on an art project. I carved it from a spare square of wood and painted it.

There's only one, by the way, I just have a few images so you can see it from all sides, and the top one is to give you a sense of how how big it is. And the cockpit is, indeed, on the wrong side - hence the silly title. Yes, I know. I should hang my head in shame for getting it wrong in the first place.

Han Solo

I painted this years ago, back when I still had hope for me and watercolour. It was drawn freehand from a reference, so the proportions are probably a bit off, but I hope you like it anyway!

Wedge, Tycho, Janson, and Hobbie of the famed Rogue Squadron - my favourite flyboys! I copied the outlines from the back of Rogue Squadron: The Phantom Affair" and coloured them in according to how they appear in the comics. I don't use colouring pencils often, but I think they kind of worked here. I put all four pieces together in Photoshop, along with the names and quotes, for the sake of presentation. I put my name on it as well, since I didn't sign the pictures at the time!

Han Solo sketch

Yet another rendition of Han Solo, smart-mouthed rogue and reckless pilot. I needed a break from the other drawing I'm working on, hence this. The reference is a movie still from ESB, just after the famous "Sir! I've isolated the reverse power flux coupling!" scene.
