This was my final exam painting for the fall term 2011 Painting IV class I took. The assignment was to take a popular artistic motif and translate it into subject matter of our own choosing. After thinking about it for a while, I came up with this idea of Doctor Who incarnations as the Leonardo da Vinci "Last Supper" painting. I think what really got me thinking along those lines was remembering how the same scene was parodied in the "M.A.S.H." movie.

You can view Leonardo da Vinci's painting of the Last Supper very easily by doing an image search for it. Here's a link to the Wikipedia entry about the painting and a picture of it is included:

I found that the gestures of the Apostles were strangely fitting to the characters thus I've arranged them in very specific positions based loosely on chronology but also upon their personalities and other significant lore about them. I look forward to seeing what fans of the show might have to say about how I've arranged this composition. I grew up watching Doctor Who on PBS as my father would allow me to stay up late on the weekends to see the show. Thank you, Dad, for giving me a lifetime love of the Doctor!

None of the characters are referenced from any one image. I drew them using multiple references and their costuming is not specific to any one season. I used elements of their costumes which were characteristic to those particular characters throughout the years from both television and print resources. The Tardis Index File (aka Doctor Who Wiki) was incredibly helpful!

Needless to say, I spent a lot of time prowling through my anatomy books and even getting advice from college professors (in the initial stages) and other artists (in the middle) to help resolve some of the anatomical issues I was having. I don't claim that this is absolute perfection, but I worked damn hard at this and I'm happy with the figures.

The background was hand drawn (I have it in a sketch book and probably scanned somewhere) then rendered using a variety of techniques combining photo textures and custom brushes.

Overall, I would say this is the most challenging picture I've done in terms of both technique and anatomical accuracy.

I would dearly love some constructive criticism on this piece so I can continue to improve. ]]>

The small domino mask he wore was not designed to conceal but rather to reveal the delicate line of his jaw and lips which were full and more suited to a woman's face than his own. His azure gaze swept the milling crowd of revelers. Where was the Captain? His Captain?

The King suspected there was more than respect and friendship between the two men and he didn't like it. It was a sacred duty to marry and produce heirs but His Highness didn't seem inclined to do either. Not even the ethereal Elven maidens held his attention for more than the few moments it took to exchange polite and meaningless phrases. Thus, His Majesty sought every plausible reason to separate the Crown Prince and the Captain.

Frustrated and worried in equal measures, the Crown Prince stole away to one of the many gardens cultivated within the palace. Despite the chill, peach blossoms perfumed the air. He took deep breaths and gazed up at the starry sky, silently beseeching the blessing of the gods. The crunch of gravel and jingle of bells alerted His Highness to the presence of another. His right hand darted to the jeweled hilt of his rapier even as he turned to confront the intruder.

Heavy white face paint gleamed opalescent in the moonlight. Hints of gold thread and jewelery winked at the Crown Prince. Bells on the jester's cap chimed with every movement. But there was no mistaking the man who approached.

His Captain.

Zhalar (my character on the left) and Grev had a somewhat antagonistic friendship. Although this scene never happened in actual described role play, I can easily imagine Zhalar leaning in close, invading Grev's personal space, to taunt the Warrior. Grev, as per usual, maintains his stoic and somewhat belligerent silence in the face of Zhalar's relentless teasing.

Hubby and I visited the Cathedral of Worms last year. It was an amazing experience! The art is unbelievable! Outside by what used to be the gate to the cloisters (I think??) I saw this weathered statue of a lion ready to pounce from a thicket of vines. It was a bright, sunny day and play of light and shadow over the lichen-encrusted stone was magical to me.

I treated myself to some digital art tutorial CDs for my birthday from the Digital Art Tutorials website - [link]

This started as a pencil sketch. I used smudge, dodge and burn in greyscale mode to create the value "underpainting" then digitally coloured it. I consider myself a fairly proficient Photoshop user. The tutorial offered me some insights to using the programme in ways I hadn't considered before. I guess it's that fine edge between Amateur and Professional colourist?

Zhalar is a character I've role played since 1993 in a variety of different settings. He's my main in World of Warcraft on an RP realm. Loving the Cata expansion. I was ambivalent about it at first, but once I figured out all the Priest healing changes, I fell in love with the class all over again. ]]>
