I feel a little weird having this be the piece that breaks the Great Silence, but I guess it's better something than nothing, even if the something is a little, well, low-budget, hah!

I'm seeing (very loosely used here,) this lovely french man who writes the sweetest letters, but I am not very good at that, so I send back doodles of things I fantasize about us doing together. There are a couple more of these in my scraps, if y'all are interested, but since this one was a bit more draw and a bit less copy paste, I thought I might as well put it up in the gallery.

Despite my continuing efforts for the National Bolin Awareness Association, I am not immune to Mako's surly charms.

Also "subversive gender roles" is like #2 on my Korra wish list. And by that I mean I just really want Korra to wear the pants in this relationship. They have such an awesome setup for some great boy/girl messing around and I hope they take it. Speaking of objectification of men, in an earlier version Mako was (surprise surprise) wearing his workout tank. But it looked like a romance novel cover for real it was so cheap looking haha CLOTHES, UGH.

Though I've never outright stated it, I think absolutely no one will be surprised to learn I'm a huge geek for BBC's Sherlock.

Feel free to interpret this drawing however you will (and many of you will,) but I don't actually "ship" these guys, because I find what they actually have to be so much more extraordinary than a simple affair. A well-written bromance is my Achilles's heel and it cannot be denied!

Another vaguely-meta Playboy-esque cartoon. The idea is they're at the opera, and the guy's like "Yes yes, the performance is quite good, but the story! A woman, marrying simply for money? Preposterous!" and the old guy's just chewing his gums going "quite right, quite right"

hahaha anyway, the point is, I couldn't get the wording right and fit the punchline in the end of the sentence. If you have a suggestion please comment, and if there's a really good one I'll put it under the cartoon where it's supposed to go!

I've been trying to get more local color into my illustrations, it's a real struggle for me. Photoshop.

I'm really loving getting to cross random things off my to-make-list this vacation. "playboy-style cartoon" has been up there for a long time. I think, if I could have chosen any art career from history, playboy cartoonist during the 60's would definitely be in the top 3.

I dunno if this gag really works, it's supposed to be a joke about how the guys in these cartoons are always really gross and old, and in real life they'd be super self-conscious, but it turned out to just be about some nice titties hahaha OH WELL! Worse things have happened, am I right?

Glokta, you old charmer! How handsome and debonair you look this evening!!!

I love me some Ardee and Glokta. I like the idea of them taking walks in the park and just mocking the shit out of everyone they see. Generally I imagine the fashions in the city to be like...a slutty Victorian with a horrible rococo palette, but something about the way Ardee was always described just made me think of Lizzie Bennet. That contrast inspired my "regency vs. rococo" before I figured out I just wanted to draw some fanart hahaha And I love the idea that the two least innocent people in this city just go around wearing white all the time. It's just too good.

Characters are from the First Law trilogy, which, as always, I highly recommend.

I just finished reading Joe Abercrombie's "The Heroes" last night, which was good, but it just made me really really miss the "First Law" trilogy. I cannot tell you how much I love that series. If you still haven't found the tonic to the melancholic aftertaste of the slightly disappointing Dance With Dragons, I STRONGLY suggest this series.

Anyway, this is Ardee, getting crunk. I like to think she set out this sexy tableau for Glokta and then while she was waiting for him to get home started drinking and this is her face when he finally comes in, in all her belligerent glory. The woman's flawed, what can I say? Though, seriously, they're probably my favorite fiction couple since...ever. I f'ing love those two.

Another book cover for my class... Everyone thought I was kidding when I put this on the wall. Then they talked about the butt. Which I didn't have a problem with, I'm quite fond of the butt.

You know that phase when you're half awake and you have these thoughts that seem totally reasonable and then you remember it later in the day and are like...why would making cabbage and vanilla souffle be a good idea again? That's when I thought of this.

Unfortunately, my scanner is so accustomed to "100 shades of green by toerning" that it had an ABSOLUTE SEIZURE when I tried to scan this. It's more subtle in real life, I swear!

So I just finished my senior show which means FREE TIME WHAT? After the show, a friend and I were joking about our work, and I was accusing him of having carved rocks in every piece, so I was like "What do I have in mine?" and I was actually thinking about it and kai is like

"WET BREATS."

So this is another experiment in combining digital and traditional, it's acrylic on top of a digital color sketch that I blew up. Definitely not finished but it's a bit frivolous to render it all out. I have shiny lips and nips and really that's all I require.

There's this one moment at the end of this movie, when toothless is helping hiccup hobble to the door and then his busted tail sweeps into frame...
The first time I saw it, my reaction to the movie went from "this is the best thing that's ever happened to me" to "this is the best thing that's ever happened to animation."
There were several moments of really skillful bringing-it-back-around in the movie, but that one was by FAR my favourite.

Well you guys, I don't even know where to start. It's been a long time since a movie made this much of an impact on me. Like, LOTR long time ago. And when it comes down to it, really, it's just a movie. But there are certain things that people attatch to for whatever reason, and HTTYD is mine.

This movie has rekindled my faith in the state of American animation, inspired me WELL beyond the kick I needed to get me out of my art slump, and for lack of a less hideously corny phrase, made me excited about doing things with my life. Not to mention, it has had an alarmingly influential hand in restoring a really important friendship. I feel so weird putting all this in writing but seriously folks, this is lifechanging shit.

So thank you to everyone who had even the slightest hand in making this film. Thank you to the guy who got everyone's coffee so they could keep working.

And then there's YOU GUYS. Thank you for making a piece of mine no 1 on the front page! Never imagined that would ever happen hahaha. Seriously though, The support I get and contacts I make on this site is so so so important to me, and I wish there was more I could give back.

Anyone who knows me in real life knows that I have been completely obsessed with this movie since the trailer was released EONS ago, but because of my untimely stay in Rome, I wasn't around when it was released and by the time I got back, it was already out of theatres. I got the art of book and listened to the soundtrack to exhaustion (OBSCENELY good by the way) but was denied the joy of the movie itself. Well, it came out on DVD last week and last night, I saw How To Train Your Dragon for the very first time.

So it was good when Hiccup didn't die, but, I mean, the dude lost a leg, on a faraway island. It must have been tense there for a while. And also I have an INTENSE DRAMA fetish.

Well professors and classmates both have been telling me for many a semester that I need to find a way to combine painting with my inkwork. Frankly I've never been able to connect my paining in my mind with efficient illustration, but they all seem convinced. My recent noir illustrations were an attempt at that....it didn't work out. So I'm biting the bullet and just painting on my inks.

This was an absolute pain to assemble in photoshop cause my scanner here is A) bad and B) small.

Breifly, my process, cause it was an experiment that happened to work out: did my inks on 1 ply bristol, scanned it, then soaked it for about a minute and then stapled it to homosote, and painted on it. Good for you, bristol!

I like this enough to keep experimenting with it, I think.

I don't want to say too much about this image lest I jinx myself so here are a few characters from a story I've had floating around for a while...more to come.

I've been thinking a lot recently about sustainable art. Not like, made of bamboo, but like, could I actually do a comic of this? Is it the right balance of effort and aesthetic? Will it get old to viewers? So anyway trying out ink wash, which is something I used to do a bunch. I think it'll be good once I loosen up a bit!

Um some more stuff from my Cinematics class. This is the last of it-- I've been editing my portfolio so I figured I'd share with you guys the stuff I dug up.

On Drawing Children

Just a little thing I've been noticing. Something to keep in your mind, I guess, if you find drawing kids difficult. I'll probably scrap this in a bit.

For a complete lesson, just watch some Miyazaki haha. Other than the obvious wonderful designs, I love how he handles children because he takes them really seriously. He knows that being a kid is rough and they feel things very intensely and truly, and it sucks when adults brush off their triumphs and trials as small potatoes, which we tend to do because we think our problems are more important. But I think children feel much more deeply than adults do, meaning they have the capacity to be much happier, and much sadder. Miyazaki is able to capture that whole spectrum.
