Needing to stay connected often resulted in spontaneous disconnects, which could corrupt your town. Coupled with the connection issue was the fact that the servers needed to play online were overloaded, resulting in insane wait times just to log in and play. It was, by far, one of the most disastrous video game launches to date. Over a year and a half ago I made a post showing some of the behind the scenes art of brentalfloss the comic. Since such a long time has passed since then I thought another one might be fun for everyone to look at and to show the process we go through in creating nearly every single strip. Specifically the importance of revisions.

In the first set of examples you can see how sometimes the entire comic is redrawn to get the gestures and poses down right. Occasionally the first gestures I draw aren't quite how Brent and Dan envisioned it. Going back and fourth through e-mails, we gradually work our way towards how they envision the comic should look. I use photo reference whenever I can, and each change means shooting new photos. It can sometimes take a while, but it's well worth the effort.

Sometimes the edits are more subtle, such as in the following two examples. In the one on the left we added a "youtube" window to make it clearer that they were watching it on a computer, and the one on the right added cobwebs and dust to to make it look dirtier. There are often a lot of after-the-fact changes like this for each strip. This includes changing the dialogue and phrasing of the text even after the strip is "finished."

And finally, sometimes a revision requires completely chopping out many panels; such as in the "New Yorker" strip on the bottom. Originally it was going to have 3 panels, ending with Reggie telling the press. But it soon became clear that it could be reduced to 1 panel without any loss of explanation. Sorry Geoff Keighley, we had to cut your cameo.

I've said before that "brentalfloss the comic" is a very collaborative effort and I cherish that very much. It's a lot of fun to work with Dan and Brent, and they're always trying to tweak and edit each strip to make sure the joke lands perfectly.

I'm not familiar with what the controversy this comic was making fun of was. I think it had something to do with some fan-art of a modified Pikachu spreading around tumblr causing people to think Nintendo was making a new evolution or something...

The original joke called for "bad" pokemon from the original 151. However, I convinced brent and Dan to use pokemon from later games as well since I was the only one who's played beyond Red and Blue and knew that the original 151 only hit the tip of the iceberg of crappy pokemon (Vanilluxe anyone?). ]]> Read the latest Brentalfloss comic at the new website! For some reason I feel that this strip is punishment for the joke I made a year ago about being unable to draw transformers: [link] (a joke which, sadly, too many people thought was me being serious.)

I did something different for this strip and used actual photo reference for all the poses. I think it helped the art a bit so it's an ongoing technique I'll be using in future strips. Also, please don't complain about the inaccuracies of Optimus Prime's design. There were so many variations on the toy and character model that I couldn't find 2 images of him that agreed on what features he had. So I just combined a bunch of them together into one. I'm conflicted about this strip. On the one hand I love the joke and the tie-in to the 2012 Doctor Who Christmas Special, on the other hand I really really REALLY suck at drawing real people, and the various Doctors in particular have always given me trouble.

This strip needing to be finished very fast to remain topical (literally one day after the special aired), forcing me to watch the special for the reference (something I wasn't planning to do because I like to wait till seasons of shows are over so I can watch them all in a row on Netflix). So I have mixed feelings about this one. I like the concept, but I struggled to get it done in the short amount of time I had to work on it.

The only thing not real in this strip are the word balloons. I drew and colored all the images with copic markers and then took photos of them with my hand posed over the artwork.
