J. Scott Campbell joins Finch by going Beyond Wonderland

Zenescope Entertainment has just released news that superstar artist J. Scott Campbell (Gen 13, Danger Girl, Spider-Man) has completed a cover for the very soon to be released BEYOND WONDERLAND 1 which debuts at Comic Con in San Diego later this month. The same issue is already featuring a cover by the renowned David Finch (Ultimatum, Moon Knight, New Avengers) and now Campbell will join Finch as both artists' covers will ship at a 50/50 ratio to retailers.
"It's an exciting time when two amazing artists in this industry both offer to do covers for your series." Said Zenescope VP Ralph Tedesco, "I can't thank J. Scott or David enough for the work and brilliance they put into each of their pieces."
Beyond Wonderland is the sequel mini-series to Zenescope's indie hit Return To Wonderland and is a dark, horror-filled take on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Tedesco describes the series as "American Beauty meets Jacob's Ladder with a nightmarish version of Carroll's classic sprinkled throughout."
Said David Finch regarding Zenescope's 'Wonderland' series, "Every so often something comes along that just seems so obvious that you don't know why it hasn't always been done."
There is still some time for retailers to place their orders for Beyond Wonderland 1 featuring the covers by Finch and Campbell by using Diamond order code JUN084373.

EDIT: Totally ganked the watermarked version from Scott's gallery on this one, I think it's a REALLY good idea to have these replaced with them in my gallery, because people have had the habit of reposting them in articles without credit constantly, and some dont have contact info to fix that situation.

there are maybe 3 pieces in this calendar that we had to change certain things just because they looked too disney.

the thing with this one was the twinkles next to the rose i put in myself.

although it's a nice touch, we couldn't put it in the calendar due to copyright issues. as *bellesprince states,
"n the original story, Belle's father picked a rose from the Beast's garden, and in payment, the Beast demanded he send his daughter to live with him. The concept of the enchanted rose, which was tied to the curse was all Disney's, and it's become an icon associated with the film, so you can understand why it would be copyrighted."

so in other words, a rose is a rose, until you add twinkles.

so here it is seen for the first time

This one was certainly one of the most difficult ones to color, but mainly just the swirly blue bits, which kind of got lost over the dress.

giving these girls all their own unique shades of makeup was (not only one of the cheesiest girly things i can say this this point) fun and something i feel colorists really overlook. they give hot women in comics killer bodies and all they wear is lipstick? pa-lease!

also i've never had the chance to really play with doing different types of lingerie, which i did on this piece and the beauty and the beast, which i will post tomorrow.

so, here we have my favorite out of the bunch. it is #1 to me for a few different reasons. mainly, the mood campbell put into such a piece.

and sometimes when i'm working on a piece, i put myself there and spend the afternoon in that location. this was a very peaceful, private, solitude and sanctuary of a place to spend my evening and it was simply wonderful, and i connected to this piece more than any of the others.

thats is probably why you will find me doing alot of forest pieces in my personal work, because i love to just hang out with the trees and i get to do that every time i paint one.

so, lastly, this was not the final printed version. scott had drawn a tiny bit to show where the nipple was present, and i went as far as to make the sheet slightly sheer, (as you can see here). modest as he is (and it's cute) he politely asked me to remove it.

this one was like a dream really, when eric said he was going home to draw this one night i was so jealous thinking somebody else would get to color an ebas cover with wolves (my favorite animal)

when i started this (flatting it myself) i was really pumped about it, and promptly jumped right in to it feet first.

one thing about jumping into a cover is when you go in only with half your heart you might end up coming back out of it a little before you are done, but you stay safe in knowing you wont be over-thinking anything. but when you jump in feet first, you fall into it and can have your heart broken, much like love in fact.

i had my heart broken, as this didn't exactly turn out as i wanted. i guess in the end i'd wished the sunshine was someplace else.

now we start to get into my favorite pieces from the calendar.

there has always been something about the way scott draws wicked women, this one was no exception! he mixed the evil queen from sleeping beauty and the one from snow white, with a bit of his own.

it wasn't hard to stay with the theme, purple and green. although scott loves his blood reds and maroons and burgundies.

the linework for this one was the first one to truly blow me away, somehow you could really see how much a labor of love this calendar was becoming for him.

One of the most fun pieces for the calendar with every excuse to use some odd colors why not? it was certainly hard to let go seeming as how i've spent years now trying to reign in my colors.

i can just imagine sitting there screwing up my eyes trying to keep the perspective on this one somehow believable.

campbell is a known disney lover, and it's pieces like this you can see it, it certainly shines.

ok guys thank you so much for all your helpful critiques! I got a lot of good ones, and a lot of repeating ones, which means it's time to close the option for now so i can work on the obvious flaws.

and I'm sure many arching enthusiasts will try to tell me how wrong it is and to that I say

i want to take this opportunity to address my critique preferences, because some of you have been rolling your eyes over it, or deciding to disrespect me because i dont ALWAYS want one..

well, it's like this.

most of the time, especially lately, i dont get much time to actually spend time on a lot of things. and when it comes to my own art, especially. work you churn out at 50% your top skill isn't worthy of really giving a critique to.

how many things would look better given you had more time? how many things will people point out that you just plain didn't spend much time on? rushed? skipped over? that you already realize? that they will repeat, repeatedly?

just kind of seems stupid to me. most of the time i'm just doing my thing because it's what i love and i'm indulging my needs for my own art every once in awhile.

but then there comes a time, where i dont feel rushed. all my work is done, i am rested, i have the day, or a couple days to myself. and i actually still like the drawing i am painting.

well, that is one of these times for this piece. i made sure i didn't rush any of it, nipped all the loose ends, tucked in it's shirt and sent it out the door clean and finished and ready for it's day.

it doesn't happen that often that i spend THAT much time on something, because i have one day, not two to sit and work on it.

so i am asking this time because i actually feel that i gave it ALL i had. so if i fucked up, and you guys see it, i need to know, right?

it means that much more.

hopefully it makes sense, and hopefully if you've been questioning my preferences on critique, you'll understand a little bit more about why.

Not the final cover. The final has her with a much more red skintone (since she's from mars)

and I dont care to hear about how she shouldn't have a navel, it's an obvious aesthetic choice.

So, this piece was something Scott had done and put in his sketchbook, and Dynamite is putting out Warlord of Mars as a comicbook.

Yes, I think this turned out almost exactly as I had imagined, and thats always nice.

Once I stopped the stream the rest of it went very, very quickly because it wasn't lagging. I merged more layers but the .psd is still in it's finality 499MB

oh well.
