She didn't care that she couldn't win the tournament, she just wanted to see how things went. In short, she trounced the competition, including popular local figure Corky Koma (who was the winner of the tournament). She signed up for the next racing season immediately and was ultimately quite successful in it. Her problem was that she was very competitive and, for a while, a rather bad winner. The engine was one reason I decided to take this on, as it's real life counterpart, "Pamela", is technically a Quarry Hunslet. I say technically because it's a hybrid of a Hunslet and a Hudswell Clarke locomotive. It took a while to get around to doing, owing to University commitments, but I'm quite pleased with the results. It feels like I've forgotten how to draw ponies in the last 5 months (but I'm much better at drawing penguins as a result - long story).
The picture was a lot wider than this, but I trimmed it to make it seem less empty. In the midst of planning the new versions of these, I decided I needed to draw this scene.
New style! Well, it's the same as my recent style. But I've not drawn any Alton characters in it yet. It uses techniques I've learned from my animation course. Expect all my old Alton Island portraits to be moved to Scraps and replaced with new pictures like this, with subtle tweaks.

Oblivion's sporting a new suit as well. The ride got repainted during the 2012/13 closed season and it looks better than ever...

Alton Island © Matt Lindsay 2008-2013

For some reason my headcanon tells me the series takes place in the 1860s, justifying the limited technology the ponies have. Following the history of the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway (which the Trottingham Vale is based on), the line has connections to a tramway that, while independent, shared the line to Portmaredoc station. Two more engines were brought on in the 1920s, but ultimately the line closed in the late 1940s and they began to dismantle it. It would've been lost forever had it not been for a very large campaign to save it... The only reason I regularly listen to the radio.
It's a 2 hour show playing nothing but video game music. They also talk about films, with a weekly review, various goings on in the gaming industry, and have regular themed specials. Since my favourite music comes from video games, I love it.
They posted this video yesterday - [link]. The title just made me think of TF2, and it's styled after one of their Meet the Team videos (the early ones, anyway), so my brain got working for once.

Featuring:
MattVV (creator & host) as The Scout
JonoD (co-presenter & industry journalist) as The Engineer
Crofty (indie developer) as The Sniper
Boomstick (film-maker and director) as The Demoman

I'm quite pleased with how this turned out. I actually tried blocking out before diving into drawing, and for the most part it worked.
One of my favourite parts of the picture is the dispenser, or the Generation Synthesiser as it must now be called. JonoD runs part of the show where he plays retro and chiptune music, so of course the dispenser needs to represent this. Hence it has been modified to play games from six consoles (upgrading will add more), it has dedicated cartridge slots and disc drives on top and at the side, it can play all manner of audio and video codecs, it has built in speakers and an excellent bass. All it needs is a controller of your choice to work.

TF2 © Valve Software
[link]

VGM Awesome [link].

A stallion stands in the middle of the road, a green flag in his mouth. He turns to the side and waves it. What responds is the low, loud blast of a steam whistle, as the most peculiar locomotive passes through the crossing, hauling 11 gleaming carriages along the former back roads towards the terminus at the town centre. It's reached "Desperately searching nerd-shops in Japan for merchandise" and "Commission a £165 Kigurumi" levels.
I wanted to do an Earthbound cosplay. Who to cosplay? Well, Giygas, of course. Although that resulted in the small problem of how you cosplay a being that has no physical form and is only shown as a swirling red sprite mixed with a never-ending stream of mindscrew imagery and a foetus. I'd seen several attempts, from gijinkas to wearing a cardboard cut-out around your neck. But none of them were actually Giygas.
A kigurumi was the answer. Specifically, Custom Kigurumi: a London based company that makes kigurumis to order. It took a while, but the result was fantastic. The 'tail' has grab-handles fitted, so it can be held above the head to complete the look.

So, here's a picture from a quick photoshoot I did today. Giygas somehow sneaking up on an unsuspecting Mr Saturn.
===
The Mr Saturn plush was bought while I was in Japan. The whole 'searching nerd shops' thing is true - I covered quite a lot of Den Den town trying to find somewhere that sold Earthbound/Mother 2 stuff. I finally found one, but couldn't buy everything on display due to limited suitcase space, so I just got that (it came with a trash can too) and a Ness and Pokey statue. And then there's the smaller Mr Saturn I spent ¥800/£5 trying to win from a UFO Catcher while in Hiroshima. Cheaper than importing, folks!

I wore this to London Expo on the 29th May, and was very surprised at the number of people who recognised Giygas: about 10, if I remember correctly.

Custom Kigurumi's website:
[link]

===

[link]

I like the Derpy/Whoof pairing.
I don't actually watch Doctor Who. The only episodes I've seen are The Age Of Steel and the last 10 minutes of Journey's End (Tenth Doctor ftw). There was a lot we had to fit in to 7 days, including Nara, going on the Shinkansen, visiting host families, LOTS of shopping, and going to Universal Studios Japan.

One of the best rides there was Hollywood Dream: The Ride (almost all their rides had the suffix 'The Ride') - a B&M coaster with no inversions but some awesome airtime, and speakers built-in to the headrests that play one of five songs. It's quite a photogenic ride, despite the lack of any actual theming (the coaster trains all have lights on them - that's incredible).

This was one of my favourite pictures of the ride, and I need some more things in my gallery. So here you go.

Also, this is my first submission taken with my new camera. 14MP FTW.

Then there's the relationship between her and Oblivion... (Personally, I love her bow)
Teresa 'Trinity' Tamin as Jeff - Just because, really. It's funny.
Couldn't think of anyone for Poo.
Ripsaw as Pokey/Porky - Cowardly, rather full of himself, and more willing to serve evil than to die fighting against it. He assists only the strong and able.
Nemesis as Giygas - Duh. The demon king is practically the embodiment of evil in a semi-human form. While Giygas looks sad and pained, Nemesiygas... doesn't...

Giygas has been something of an 'interest' of mine for several months. This was one of many fan-art ideas I came up with for him.

Music to set the scene: [link] [link]

Alton Island © TurboJ
Earthbound © Nintendo

It was excellent until I realised that the strips I was reading were reprints, and it was cancelled soon after.
One thing that always stood out for me was Metal Sonic. You see, they never called him 'Metal Sonic'. Instead, he was called Metallix. I love the name, and I've always called him that, regardless of which model of Metal Sonic it is.

Now, onto the picture. Several years ago, I began drawing the Mecha Sonic from Sonic & Knuckles, the one that you fight in Sky Sanctuary. It was of a much more awesome design than the standard Metal Sonic, and I think Sega should've done more with it.
Now, following this, I had an idea, very similar to StC's 'Brotherhood of Metallix', where the Metallix rebelled against Doctor Robotnik and tried to exterminate Sonic themselves. Except this was different.

The Mecha Sonic had been rebuilt, and was under the control of a man who repaired hundreds of other badniks Robotnik had sent for scrap. When the man died, Mecha Sonic inherited everything he owned. As it turned out, the man wasn't as mentally stable as he appeared, and this was reflected in Mecha's programming. One thing lead to another and Mecha Sonic found himself building an army of Metal Sonics. He dubbed himself the Master Metallix and began a conquest of power, aiming to destroy Sonic and get revenge on Robotnik.

The picture shows part of their plot. Following its destruction, the Death Egg's remains fell back to Mobius, landing in the deserts of the Dust Hill Zone. Master Metallix is aiming to restore it to its former glory. And with a Chaos Emerald already in his grasp, his plans are within reach...
The Master's design is based on a mix of other designs; from the standard Metal Sonic, the S&K Mecha Sonic and Fleetway's interpretation of it.
I totally didn't re-use the same Metallix drawings throughout the picture. Totally...
I also decided to try something new: thicker outlines. Why? I dunno. I just think it works.

Sonic the Hedgehog © SEGA
