These adorable little rodents are called shafan slaim (rock rabbit) or hyrex. They live of human brains which they gather by leaping at tourists from great heights and cracking their skulls thus gaining access to the delicious brains inside, which they leak with long tongues "with human gore imbued." (Poe 3)

A hyrex can eat up to 47 tourists in its lifetime making it the no. 3 cause of death among tourists in Israel, lagging behind only after ancient traps and over-talktive taxi drivers (listed as suicide.) (2007 report)

Hyrex are especially drawn to members of the clergy due to the latter's softheadedness and silver tongues, which the hyrex use to attract females. This gave rise to the ppular medieval term "heretic" (ME heretix < MF herexique < LL hyrexicus).

The current population of hyrex in Israel is estimated to be 1 (shown in the above picture).
