That's a balpoint pen moleskine sketch and a crappy photo of it (I don't have a scanner currently). A sort of idea of a sci-fi story I had with these two characters. I wanted to interpret Fuseli's piece not word-to-word, but rather as an idea he wanted to show. A nightmare. A woman (just like in the original) slowly driven into madness by her own consciousness. We'll see how it turns out when I'm done with it..

I didn't want to follow it literally, I've seen so many interpretations of it while studying (History of Art), I was aiming more for a dialogue with the piece than strict variant on the topic.

I've been also recently re-reading Sandman again, so Delirium might've something to do with the concept as well as Fuseli's piece itself.

I know it's something pretty unusual from me when you look at my gallery here.. then again my gallery here doesn't show even half of the ideas I have and styles I want to try.. It's one of those pieces..

Still unfinished, so it's more like a thumbnail of actual work. I was trying to find a good composition, a balance of colours and textures (I use my own or from CGTextures as a background, then I paint on them to have a more varied surface). The girl is pretty much finished though, she and the stone were the first elements I started with, the rest just sort of "grew" around them.

I thought I won't manage this time for the challenge's deadline, but at least I found some time for a wip. I had countless ideas, but nothing good, so I did what I'm usually doing when no inspiration strikes me - I took lots of random textured brushes, doodled abstract things, blurred, erased, repeated, sharpened, flipped etc. I keep doing it until I find the shapes interesting enough to start developing some forms out of it. In here the background is still in between - some bits are blurred or textured blots, some already have more shape.

As for the girl - expect, well, more balloons I used `lockstock's picture as a ref for her hands. Not final yet, but it will probably change a bit in the end anyway. It's a wip, so it just shows a general atmosphere the final piece will have. Or, knowing me, the final piece might end up looking completely different. It's one of those pieces that constantly change from the beginning as I develop new shapes and ideas for it. It actually started with a lantern in the deep forest, divided by a big gap in the earth with some lava flowing.. I might actually publish earlier steps with the finished piece, they're really.. not similar to this.

At first I was bloody unhappy with how it was turning out, than something clicked and it ended up ok, I think. I was always worried to go with a painterly style and leave a very simple, graphic composition and I think it sort of turned out like I wanted it too. Thinking of whole series in this style actually (famous queens and historic ladies). Also - used this one as an opportunity to practice hands and skintones.

No direct refs used, but I looked up a lot of Egyptian jewellery and hands (few angles). Not one used for the face though, I always wanted to imagine my own version of Cleopatra, and this is sort of what I had in mind. Not too girly, not to adult. Not too sexy, yet attractive and pretty sensual.

Done in Corel Painter and Photoshop, a loose ref used (some of my own resources, ekhem, party photos - hands and guitar mostly). Just in case - no ref used for the face, wasn't inspired by anyone etc.. People seem to find every single celebrity and themselves too in my more realistic faces but please, drop it. If I wanted to base it on anyone I would mention it. Really.

Fun fact: I hate blue. Well, most shades of it anyway. So that's pretty rare when you see a fully blue piece coming from me.

Mine is a WIP, still very much unfinished. I used some references, especially for the rooster (which was nightmare to get right) and some of *mizzd-stock, although not one photo. She has some great shots of folded materials and hands, so I looked those up as general guidelines. Concepts of outfit, her face and background are, as usual, mine.

Anyway, she's often associated with drinking rum, chilli peppers, colour purple, a scarf and a (bloody) rooster. Or hen. Depending on what I read. Also glasses with usually one of lens missing.

She's also the only fair-skinned loa, often said to have red hair. I thought it'll be more interesting to put her in a southern setting than on a cemetery, even if that doesn't really go 100% in tact with her story. But well.

Oh, she apparently borrowed baron Samedi's hat.

A bigger version is coming up when I'm done with it.

I summed up few things usually associated with this creature: at first she was just a common monster but her myth has changed with times, later she was shown as a beautiful, yet dangerous creature, hunted by heroes but also loved by gods (Poseidon), with wings and serpent hair which she got after Athena turned her into a monster, being jealous of her beauty (weird for a goddess of wisdom, but hey; she failed with the apple as well).

So to show her in a different era I decided to put her in space opera setting and give her holographic wings. It was a nice exercise - something new for me, that I always liked, but never painted. I also didn't use any references at all, wanted to see how far I can go without it. Done in Photoshop and SketchUp (simple 3D model of the city in the background, which I later repainted).

Mine is an Owl Princess and still a WIP. EDIT: it's done. But I'm leaving the old comment, as it's more fun /edit. Sorry for spamming, but thought some people would like to get noticed when it's finished

I wanted to practice painting flowers. Which was stupid. I got into the stage when I'm pretty happy with foliage (lots of custom brushes), but the flowers are still not done. Same as tiara.

I also used a ref for the owl (random google image), as I never painted one. And a ref for flowers, of course (my own). Or actually a few. And I think I based initial tiara design on some photo, but I changed it so much, I'm not sure if it even resembles it. I still don't know what got into me that I decided to paint such complicated foliage.

I'm quite happy with her owl-face. Not as much with the rest yet. But will finish it soon. Hope you'll like it!

Unfortunately ~washuuchan couldn't join us this time because of personal reasons, but let's hope she comes back someday!

Mine is an Owl Princess and still a WIP. EDIT: it's done. But I'm leaving the old comment, as it's more fun /edit. Sorry for spamming, but thought some people would like to get noticed when it's finished

I wanted to practice painting flowers. Which was stupid. I got into the stage when I'm pretty happy with foliage (lots of custom brushes), but the flowers are still not done. Same as tiara.

I also used a ref for the owl (random google image), as I never painted one. And a ref for flowers, of course (my own). Or actually a few. And I think I based initial tiara design on some photo, but I changed it so much, I'm not sure if it even resembles it. I still don't know what got into me that I decided to paint such complicated foliage.

I'm quite happy with her owl-face. Not as much with the rest yet. But will finish it soon. Hope you'll like it!

Okay, I got kind of carried away with it. Had so much fun with the faces that when I finished them I needed to make all the rest more realistic than I intended to. Ah well. One day I'll learn

I got a psychotic cat (cats are sweet and small, right?) and a doll. And snow. And sort of an evening. And even a star! Ha. Probably not my best interpretation, but hey, everybody's been busy with Christmas

This time it was based on one of the first sketches I did for the series, back in December 2009. I think this one is one of my favourites among the series. I left it at one point for a month or so, as it started to look like crap and I had no idea how to change it. This break worked - after a while I came back to it, changed colour scheme a bit and added some details I didn't think of before. Sometimes leaving a piece for some time really helps.

For those catching little details - yes, at some places between pieces in these series I re-used some elements. I painted a few flower sets and little details separately and, as I was really in a hurry with those, I just re-used them in different places. I didn't use any works that don't belong to me, of course. Just wanted to make it clear for all drama hunters out there ]]>

Funny fact about this one - I painted those fishes for a different piece which I never finished. When I finished this pencil sketch (it was based on one of my moleskine sketches) I was clueless about what would fit the background best. And, well, floating dead fishes seemed like a good last minute solution Certainly added to the mood I was aiming for.

I don't usually draw something that's so close to my inspiration, but in this case I was in a hurry and this photo was a great influence. I did copy some parts of flowers pretty directly (or, well, tried to), but her face and the rest of it is 100% original, no ref used.

I just wanted to have some fun with this theme.
