So when I was contacted to do this one I was really excited. When I first started doing these, I sketched out a few pages of sculptures I thought would be cool. A coffee cup was one of them. I'm a little addicted. I never got around to it, but this was the perfect excuse! The woman opening the shop is a Robert Louis Stevenson fan. Her logo for the cafe was a coffee cup made of quotes from different books, a lot of them Stevenson's. I modeled the sculpture after her logo, incorporating the quotes that I could. It's built off of "A Child's Garden of Verses", another book she mentioned. ]]>

My client wanted to add a little color to this one. I tried a few different types of pigment, but everything I used made the paper too fragile to use for the figures. I used watercolor for the flowers and leaves. I do like the contrast between the white figures and the bright flowers. I think they set each other off well. ]]>

You know those moments when you finish a piece, stand back to take a final look and say "Holy crap, I didn't know I could do that!" Yeah, this was one of those moments. I've never done faces, never done so many figures that needed to look like someone specific and was honestly wondering if I'd have to call the client and tell her I didn't think I could do it. But, as it was a Christmas present for her Granddaughter, I gave it a go and I'm really proud of it! Totally doing the happy dance right now. ]]>
