My good friend `snowmask spent some ridiculous time making a ridiculously sweet draft for her up coming oil painting, "Sea Wings". And was nice enough to share it with me and let me use it for my own interpretation and digital painting.

This version here is a sketch to use as a guide for a higher resolution version I hope I have time to paint soon. The whole thing is going to need to be painted again for print and to pack more details in, but I'll show the sketch for now.

A lot more labor intensive than the typical type of sketches I do, which are generally a mixed media paint + digital composite. In this case specific close reference was not available, so, this sketch is all paint working off the lineart at just 1261x1684 px.

_{Grass in the wind, a new painterly series of experiments. In this piece more than any of my others, the physical presence of the camera in my hands translates through to the final image, imho. Like the brush strokes on a painting, the "performance of the exposure", is very visible to me in the end work.

That performance is something private for me most of the time, I do not like to work with people around me when I shoot, and do not like to have the performance so visible in the final work that is obscures what else I try to put into it. In this case though it all comes through in a way, the feel of camera hand held tightly in the gusting wind and waning sun of evening. The clicking of dials and buttons narrating the moves in a mental chess game I wade against time and light. The frenetic repositioning on my knees in the mud to fix the relationships of my elements before the tightening of breath, steading of my body, the quiet slam of the mirror catches a little piece of reality. The focus of emotional/internal energy on finding a way to live up to the potential of this moment. All of that, that camera as a flexible instrument and it's use, the dance; at lest to my eye is woven into the fabric of this shot in a balanced way.}

Earth forms again, where land is in constant flux, change is the stability. The direction this is supposed to take visually, especially zoomed out, is of stars and wispy nebula. A revaluation of depth aided by the rain drop impressions. And the plants there, life, to dance in that space.

So, where does form end, and depth start?

Soil erosion and deposit has featured in my work this summer, in this piece there is a duel presence of form as mud is washed away in the water between built up banks of sand. The plant and reflection for orientation, as well as to show the flood waters rise onto fertile ground. This is about earth not water though.

I'm not thrilled with the color or some of the technical details, a sharper duller image would have been more to my liking but this will do.
