In case the story was a bit ambiguous... basically, in chapter 1, Kai already knew Sen didn't go to school so he purposely used that topic as a conversation starter to get Sen to open up. Sneaky little son of a politician XD Too bad Sen doesn't appreciate being manipulated :D

To clear up any potential confusions, Kai is traveling alone in America. His parents stayed behind to face prosecution and to take care of Min-Min, who is terminally ill, so there no point in sending her off to a new country. There were little clues through out the last chapter and this extra but I wasn't sure if they were obvious enough ^^;

So sorry it's taking a while, but after that, everything should be a lot faster :la: (I will also post a tutorial on how to seamlessly integrate 3D rendered images into a 2D drawing after I get back from Comic Con)

About the art:

I wanted to show that China is a changing country in this drawing. Every time I visit my homeland, I notice so many changes that I can barely recognize the place. Industrialization is occurring so quickly that you can find brand new skyscrapers right next to little shacks and slums.

The Chinese people are looking forward to enjoying the simple things in life like owning a computer or car, and living in a house that doesn't have leaky roofs. Yet there is a unique culture that will be lost along with the impoverished past.

With the building of new apartments, traditional wood and brick houses will be torn down. The word "拆" in red on the the white wall in the right side of the picture means "demolish". It marks the grounds that will be replaced with skyscrapers. Many people are forced to move out, and the displaced population are usually too poor to afford the newly built apartments. Also all the continuous constructions create a lot of dust and air pollution. There is always a grey haze in the cities.

This is the inevitable future that the Chinese people must face since humans must move forward, and Sen notices the disparity of it all. They are only students right now, but they will grow up to be leaders. Between the conflicts of the past, present, and future, the Knites will try to change China for a better tomorrow.

I've been doing nothing but commissions lately so I needed a little break to get my creativity back :D

Most of you probably know by now that the character is Sen from my flash comic, Knite, which you can read here I don't think I've ever mentioned this before, but the Chinese word on Sen's back is his name. It's written as "Sheng" in Pinyin (but pronounced more like Sen in English) and it means life, live, or birth depending on the context.

I drew this a bit different than the usual style for Knite. I wanted the line art to be more sketchy to reflect the chaotic cluster of buildings. I also used a reference for the background this time because I wanted the drawing to be as authentic as possible to what some parts of China is really like. However, I added the unnaturally bright blue sky to emphasize what's not there in reality.

The photo reference is from a wonderful blog by Jamie Sinz, which you can see here [link] (the referenced image is 1/4 way down the page under the April 22, 2009 entry) The blog has various pictures of her time in China. From the rural mountains to clustered slums, her blog contains a great reflection of all sides of China :D

I am also beta testing the new Premium Content Platform feature which allows people to dowanload wallpaper size of the image for points (it can also work with tutorials, brushes, skins, etc). It would be great if you try using the feature and report any bugs to help the dA team fix any problems. I made the needed download points as low as they allow (10 points, which is around only $0.10 ) so more people can afford trying it out. If you don't have 10 points, there are llama exchange places on dA where someone will give you 1-2 points if you give them a llama (which you can give for free).

The music captured Knite's mood so well that I had to make this little looped animation to go with it. The upper right corner of this drawing has real stars to juxtapose Sen's dream with reality.

The animation is not as smooth and I wanted but I'll be taking a class on 2D animation this semester so hopefully I'll improve :D

This is the year of the rabbit, but in China we always celebrate with performances of dragon and lion dance so here's Sen (from Knite ) with a dragon kite :D The symbol in the background is "fu" which means prosperity and is suppose to bring good luck. The word is usually posted upside down because the Chinese word for "reversed" is a pun for the word "arrival", making the upside down "fu" mean "arrival of prosperity".

In other news, I will be at the Anime and Art Festival this Feburary 16-17, 2013 in Japan Town, San Francisco AND at Anime On Display/AOD.

I will be selling prints and books on the lower floor next to the Kinokuniya Book store inside the Japan Town Mall and since that’s not actually part of AOD, you don’t need to buy a badge to visit.

I will also have another table inside the AOD Dealer’s Room at table X.

Since I can’t be at 2 locations at once:

:bulletred: On Saturday the 16th, I will be at the table near the Kinokuniya from 10AM to 2PM, then I will be at AOD’s dealer’s room from 2-6:30 PM.

:bulletblue: On Sunday the 17th, I will be at AOD from 10 AM to 2PM, then at Kinokuniya from 2PM to 6PM.

Project: Knite will be drawn in a very different style than my normal semi-realistic one. I want to incorporate a more anime and watercolor feel to it. I believe different styles are more suited to different stories depending on the themes.

I aim to finish all chapters of Project: Knite by the spring of 2010 but if I don't, I will at least release a chapter or two by then (of course, the chapters will be in Flash comic format and free for public viewing like 1000 Words [link]) :D look forward to it!

Anyone wanna guess what this project will be about? ;p

This is a page from my work in progress comic Knite ch4. I normally don't post single pages on my main account but I think this one deserves a bit more attention.

In the age of industrialization, the people of China, like the rest of the modern world, wants cheap and quick energy. Right now, most of their energy is from burning coal, and one new coal factory is built per week. The incredible amount of pollution there is almost unbearable. Every time I visit the land of my birth, I can hardly breath. Sometimes I have panic attacks, trying to get away from the suffocating air only to realize you can't escape from something that surrounds you.

The price of cheap energy is more than just low quality air, it can have real consequences on people's health. There's a steady rise in birth defects and still births in relation to the rising pollution. People need to realize everything comes at a cost. Be it Chinese coal or Canadian tar sand oil, you may temporary lower the price of energy and gas and save a few dollars, but the ultimate price you pay in the long term is far higher.

But there is hope. China is also building new wind turbines and solar grids at an incredible rate. The transition to sustainable energy is a must, and not just for China but the entire world. Whether you are choosing between a new fridge, car, policy, or president, remember to look beyond price tag of the dollar, and see what the true cost is in the long run. If a politician promises lower gas and energy prices at the cost of the environment and all future generations, then is't not worth it. Think about it. Is the future of our children so worthless that you would prefer to save a few dollars now and let them suffer later?

Although I already have 2 and half chapters of Knite sketched out, I'm still rather uncertain about what style I should finish it in. Originally I was going for a anime watercolor style like in this one [link] but it wasn't working out so well so I switched to a more anime style with less watercolor.

I still don't know if this style will work out so please tell me what you guys think of this style. Is it too typical, boring, anything? Especially the eyes, I was going for a simplistic look but I don't know if that just looks weird... I'm open to all suggestions!
