Also this time I think I may have taken some actually decent pictures! Le gasp! <br /><br />Made this for ~<a class="u" href="http://zhiah.deviantart.com">Zhiah</a> with #<a class="u" href="http://artcrossing.deviantart.com">Artcrossing</a> who likes useful gifts and sea critters. She mentioned in her profile that she wanted a bag to store her sculpting tools in, but I saw that someone had already made one for her, so I decided to make her a box instead, that she can keep on her desk/workbench. The middle panel is removable so that she can either organize her tools into the two sections, or store bigger stuff in it. Because what self respecting crafter doesn't have a ton of brushes/pencils/tools lying around!? The wood for this one was actually part of a woodburning kit that I picked up for ten bucks at Michaels a while back. I was going to burn the wood, but she mentioned liking colors so I decided to paint it instead. I killed him with a (sword/dagger/axe/bow &amp; arrow/fire/poison). Everyone cheered and I earned (a treasure map/a crown/a pint/a guitar/treasure). Was a bit of a challenge (never done a standing, bipedal figure before) but it turned out better than I thought for a first try! It's a very crude and featureless carving, but that kind of adds to the mystique I suppose.<br /><br />It's about one and three quarters of an inch high and one half inch in diameter, making it the largest of the wooden totems I've made yet. And used a wood burner to... burn some stars into the handle. I had about a million different ideas for this and eventually it was narrowed down to... a squid. Even I am not exactly sure how that happened. But I'm pretty sure that my brain thinks in animals, since pretty much every 'problem solving' assignment I am given results in some sort of... useful creature. o_______o<br /><br />At any rate, I was able to do it in a week, and it accomplished its tasks (rather humorously, might I add)<br /><br />So, although you might not be able to tell, since it's painted, this was made out of wood. Clay would have been much, much easier xD<br />I wasn't aware just how difficult it was to carve wood until I did this project....<br />This was basically made by alternatively sawing chunks out of the wood to form the basic shapes, using a chisel and gouge, and a magical sanding machine. GOD BLESS YOU, MAGICAL SANDING MACHINE. Then sandpaper. <br />Once I reached the point where my hands just hurt way too bad to sand it anymore, I gave in and just painted it as it was. There's still a bunch of rough spots that I'm not happy about, but... really that's all I could do in a week :/<br />The paint was put on in multiple coats, and finished with modge podge mixed with silver ink, so he's very shiny looking.<br />The eyes were made out of some model-magic-like airdrying foam clay.<br />And the tentacles with extra big ends are made out of foam core with fabric sewn around them, and yarn glued into holes drilled in the bottom.<br /><br />So, it doesn't exactly look the way I would've wanted it to, since<br />a. It was originally going to be an octopus and I had to change my idea midway into carving it, and<br />b. Wood and I don't get along that well.<br /><br />But yeah, I guess he's cute. I was mostly able to make up for my woodworking inadequacies by covering 'em up with paint, so.... Is it a creature for it&#039;s own sake or another form of submarine! This item is about 2 2/3" at it&#039;s longest.<br /><br />This is one of my all wood (almost 100%) "dangle" creations. I use paint and many finishes, often metallic, and make sure a lot of details shine through, often even the wood grain despite sometimes high tech themes. They may maintain a retro, sometimes rustic look and feel to them, like an "olde worlde" toy or something. Comes with metal hanging hardware / findings.<br /><br />Please see my many other pieces, usually made from wood, including robots, rockets, flying saucers, vehicles, ray guns, animals, diorama scenes and more!<br /><br />Consider the many uses for this item ... a dangle comes in handy! A popular use (and one of my own first purposes) for these are as a pendant on a necklace!
