I am on a roll! Also this time I think I may have taken some actually decent pictures! Le gasp!

Made this for ~Zhiah with #Artcrossing who likes useful gifts and sea critters. She mentioned in her profile that she wanted a bag to store her sculpting tools in, but I saw that someone had already made one for her, so I decided to make her a box instead, that she can keep on her desk/workbench. The middle panel is removable so that she can either organize her tools into the two sections, or store bigger stuff in it. Because what self respecting crafter doesn't have a ton of brushes/pencils/tools lying around!? The wood for this one was actually part of a woodburning kit that I picked up for ten bucks at Michaels a while back. I was going to burn the wood, but she mentioned liking colors so I decided to paint it instead. Hope she likes it!

A present for a friend of mine, for when you can't think of a dramatic take of daring-do, it's different every time.

Once, I was (in my tent/on a boat/on an island/in a castle/in bed/in a forest) when I was attached by an (angry/sad/happy/scared/shouty/furious) (demon/zombie/mammoth/vampire/squid/dragon), who was looking for (treasure/brains/cake/love/trousers). I killed him with a (sword/dagger/axe/bow & arrow/fire/poison). Everyone cheered and I earned (a treasure map/a crown/a pint/a guitar/treasure). But that's a whole other story...

Pyrography on wooden unvarnished dice. There are a few other options that I can't remember, but I'd already given them away by the time I uploaded this.

Wooden Cthulhu Idol

Been wanting to whittle a Cthulhu idol and finally got around to it. Was a bit of a challenge (never done a standing, bipedal figure before) but it turned out better than I thought for a first try! It's a very crude and featureless carving, but that kind of adds to the mystique I suppose.

It's about one and three quarters of an inch high and one half inch in diameter, making it the largest of the wooden totems I've made yet. It was carved with an ordinary pocket knife and a small chisel.

Currently have another Cthulhu idol in the works, much more detailed and stylized (probably going to have a dark green finish).

A quick work in progress for my cello. It turns out that i can paint.... fairly well, if i do say so myself It still needs strings a bridge, and maybe an endpin. I'm also going to tung oil it so that it has an even better seal

So today Miko(~super-squid-girl) and I made a wand!

It's made from a wooden knitting needle and a piece of drift wood we found on the shore. And used a wood burner to... burn some stars into the handle. It's 13 inches long.

Sucka was made the second semester of my Freshman year...my first woodworking project, and the interesting hybrid of a spray can and a squid (the theme was two objects that didn't go together normally, but complemented each other well). I was relatively happy with the outcome...mostly because my Dad had some wonderful advice throughout the process.

_{Also known as the most painful and carpal-tunnel-inducing project I've had this year.
But I have no one to blame for that but myself!

The project was actually to make a tool that could pick up, crack and whisk an egg. I had about a million different ideas for this and eventually it was narrowed down to... a squid. Even I am not exactly sure how that happened. But I'm pretty sure that my brain thinks in animals, since pretty much every 'problem solving' assignment I am given results in some sort of... useful creature. o_______o

At any rate, I was able to do it in a week, and it accomplished its tasks (rather humorously, might I add)

So, although you might not be able to tell, since it's painted, this was made out of wood. Clay would have been much, much easier xD
I wasn't aware just how difficult it was to carve wood until I did this project....
This was basically made by alternatively sawing chunks out of the wood to form the basic shapes, using a chisel and gouge, and a magical sanding machine. GOD BLESS YOU, MAGICAL SANDING MACHINE. Then sandpaper.
Once I reached the point where my hands just hurt way too bad to sand it anymore, I gave in and just painted it as it was. There's still a bunch of rough spots that I'm not happy about, but... really that's all I could do in a week :/
The paint was put on in multiple coats, and finished with modge podge mixed with silver ink, so he's very shiny looking.
The eyes were made out of some model-magic-like airdrying foam clay.
And the tentacles with extra big ends are made out of foam core with fabric sewn around them, and yarn glued into holes drilled in the bottom.

So, it doesn't exactly look the way I would've wanted it to, since
a. It was originally going to be an octopus and I had to change my idea midway into carving it, and
b. Wood and I don't get along that well.

But yeah, I guess he's cute. I was mostly able to make up for my woodworking inadequacies by covering 'em up with paint, so.... YAY?

Steampunk Breaching Robot Whale Inspired by Jules Verne Wood Pendant Ornament Dangle

After making the giant squid in other forms I got to thinking about that creature's natural enemy ... so here is my robotic version of a steampunk (probably sperm) whale, breaching the waves or maybe doing a sharp, underwater turn. Is it a creature for it's own sake or another form of submarine! This item is about 2 2/3" at it's longest.

This is one of my all wood (almost 100%) "dangle" creations. I use paint and many finishes, often metallic, and make sure a lot of details shine through, often even the wood grain despite sometimes high tech themes. They may maintain a retro, sometimes rustic look and feel to them, like an "olde worlde" toy or something. Comes with metal hanging hardware / findings.

Please see my many other pieces, usually made from wood, including robots, rockets, flying saucers, vehicles, ray guns, animals, diorama scenes and more!

Consider the many uses for this item ... a dangle comes in handy! A popular use (and one of my own first purposes) for these are as a pendant on a necklace! Also consider it's potential as a hair clip decoration, single earring, zipper pull, hang it in a window, from a rear view mirror, next to your computer screen, AND DON'T FORGET the other of my own top 2 choices -- a Christmas Tree ornament!

Bloodwood Cephalopod

This is a piece of bloodwood. I decided to make some pens out of those bic pen inserts, so here's the first one. I call the design the "Cephalopod", because I was thinking about squid when i was making it. I think the next cephalopod I make will actually resemble a squid of some sort. XD

The first run of my squid print (the concept sketch is a few deviations back). I was still learning to work with the registration board & carving tools so it is a little mucky, but homg I love it! This is print 1 of 4. The ones after this are much better, but I gave them away before I could get pictures of them. I am a loving & giving person. Aww!

Sorry the picture sucks but the original print is too freakin big to fit on my scanner, or most scanners...come to think of it.

Done in traditional reduction style with japanese carving tools on Shina board.
