Here is a creature design collaboration I did. I was art directed throughout and stayed close to the vision of the art director. The initial pencil sketch started the process. He liked the head but was not too sure about the body.(I personally liked it.)
So I did a quick body revamp. with some crest redesigns.
Next I investigated some more body shapes and more interesting crests.
From there it was a process of mix and matching parts to get it just right.
Then came coloration and markings.
It was a fun collaboration working back and forth

This is some concept work for my new game Max the Cat.

DESCRIPTION
MAX THE CAT is a retro scroll-screen game and is a return to the mad cap games of the early 1990’s. It’s bold and cartoony, with a playable storyline. So what’s special and different about this game, well with numerous cut scenes it’s almost a playable cartoon.

Synopsis
Fuzzy MC whiskers the famous feline singer has been catnapped by the wanted criminal Lion Evil Smith and her only hope is Max the Cat a y-front wearing, hot dog eating nut job with help from his imaginary friend Sylvester a bowler hat and cape wearing pug.
Help Max battle through gardens, grave yards and woods to finally get to the circus, face Lion Evil Smith and save Fuzzy MC whiskers. If you can?

"They don't go down when you shoot them. They don't even flinch if you hit them up close with a shotgun. That's when you guess that you're screwed."

The Retributionist is an extremely aggressive mutant, to the point that it will attack its own kind. Even though it is in fact a mutant, it shares no connection or resemblance with the hive-minded "Swarm" mutants that are much more abundant and bothersome throughout the North American Wasteland. Why these anomalies exist independently remains a mystery to all but a handful that have managed to capture and study live specimens.

[Origin]
The Retributionist started out as a member of a national militia, when the US government re-armed civilians in the later stages of the war. These civilians, though almost always poorly armed due to a lack of military-grade firearms, were always at least lightly armored, with anything from welding masks and bicycle pads to combat helmets and Dragon Skin body armor. When the bombs fell, however, all but the most protected were wiped out; these survivors became heavily-mutated, nearly indestructible killing machines with all but a few mental facilities wiped out.

[Appearance]
At a glance, the Retributionist could easily pass as a human. Typically seen with body armor, a US Army BDU, gas mask, helmet, combat boots, and a trench coat, it wears the same apparel as many well-equipped survivors in the Wasteland. However, its very audible wheezes, and constant muscular spasms, are something never observed in a healthy, un-mutated human. Along with this wheezing, it will utter long, dragged-out groans when hit. Typically, they are encountered alone, though groups of two or more are seen on rare occasions when these anomalies have the ability to tell a fellow mutant and potential prey apart.

[In combat]
Many weaker swarm mutants will run and hide if they see, or more likely hear, a Retributionist approaching. For those who are more daring, though, it will swing its rifle, or secondary shotgun, like a club to stun their foe, then quickly finish it off with a single shot. Because of its thick, bulky clothing and body armor, it will simply shrug off most attacks from swarm mutants. Against humans, though, it behaves much differently. It will take cover when shot at, and will use its firearms properly. Because of its limited supply of ammunition and their non-automatic rifle, it lacks destructive power. When it runs out of rounds, it will throw its rifle to the ground and draw a small, usually low-caliber shotgun from its belt. As with its rifle, it has limited ammunition, as many shells as are on its belt, and it will discard the empty weapon. As a last resort, it will simply draw the hunting knife strapped to its right leg and charge at the target.

[Fighting]
Due to the dark lenses of its goggles and its helmet, a Retributionist is, for want of better words, almost entirely blind and deaf. Their loud wheezing means that you will more than likely hear them long before you see them. As such, the best way to dispatch one is with a silent ranged weapon from a distance, aiming for an exposed vital spot such as the neck. Though it moves somewhat slowly at first due to the heavy equipment it has donned, its urgency in movement will increase if it hears explosions or discharging firearms. Its pace will become veritable running if it is shot at. When this happens, it will unleash a chilling shriek and charge in what it assumes is the direction the shot came from, bludgeoning anything in its path that moves. Their body armor can stop most pistol rounds and buckshot, but they can easily be killed with large rifle or magnum rounds due to their very average health threshold of 100. Attacking them with grenades isn't recommended, as it will simply ignore the blast of shrapnel if it doesn't toss the grenade back. The same applies with melee, since the Retributionist will simply finish you off in the same way it would kill a mutant. If you manage to weaken it to 20 health or less, it will activate the grenade, or grenades, on its belt and run at you, effectively suicide bombing anyone unlucky enough to be within the blast radius. Its main weakness is fire; because it will (usually) move slowly, and its armor isn't (usually) fire-retardant, they will burn easily, and burn longer than most mutants thanks to the clothing serving as fuel. Your best bet for fighting one is to spot them early, keep low, and bring down a hail of fire upon it with incendiary ammunition or fire-based grenades (e.g., molotov cocktails).

[Notes]
-I got the name from the idea that it would kill swarm mutants as a kind of revenge for its turning into a mutant. I honestly don't like it that much, so if you have suggestions for the name, feel free to share them.
-This quickie was done after a final exam, so I wasn't too concerned with it being anatomically correct.
-In the image, the rifle started out as an FAL, but I changed it to an M1 carbine, and lastly an M4 carbine; if you look VERY carefully, you'll see a faint outline of an M16-style carry handle.
-The helmet/goggles/mask combination was inspired by the Pyro Trooper from Killzone 2, even if it looks a lot like Darth Vader (at least to me).
-Originally, some would be able to form basic sentences, and they were going to sound not unlike the marauders from Borderlands 2. I settled for the groans and wheezes because usually something unable to speak can seem much more dangerous and animal-like.

_{This eerie looking item for the RPG Makers VX and VX Ace Iconsets would be a ghastly Ghost Ring! Before you comment, 'No, it is not cursed. Just the design is quite difficult to describe. Maybe.'. So respectively, I had to modify the base of the ring originally and then worked with the colors from there to make it this ghastly. It's an item that allows one to raise their spiritual defenses with oddly enough, although you think it would look saintly or something like that. Anyway, how the design came to be was the work of forging spirits into the ring to give it the power. Let me know whatcha think!
