I made a video to go with these here where I explain what I use each for, how I made them, etc, so I'm not going to explain that all over. Here's the video:

Brush Presets Panel and My Brushes - Photoshop for Digital Painters

As I explained in the video I made all of these myself or they're variations of Photoshop's basic brushes. The soft brushes are in white because I use those to erase. If the brushes have a light blue box around them that means those are different strokes made by the same brush. The rest is pretty self explanatory.

* These brushes only work in CS6. After I made the video I confirmed they will not work with CS5 as CS5 only had bristle dynamic tips and there are none of those in this pack. I have fixed the pack and it now includes two files. CS6 users pick the CS6 one. The other, for CS5 users and below, should work for all versions of Photoshop but does not include brushes marked *.

Feel free to use them for whatever you like, no crediting needed. I licensed them under CC, commercial, share-alike. Basically you can use them in paintings you're going to sell and you can modify and repack the brushes as long as you share alike (you can't just download the pack and resell it).

And now I think I deserve some shameless self-promotion for this...

All basic brushes... mostly, the music notes were a temporary brush and I textured the background a bit, but otherwise you can see brushes aren't that important:

With this one I used the Real Media Wet to Dry that I worked hard to tweak just right and a lot of textures. If you saw the video you can see me use quite a variety especially for the floor.

Fashion photography clusters a large amount of different styles such as Cross process imitation, Black & White, Split toning, Lomography, etc...

Walk in Style (cross process actions)
Cross processing is the procedure of deliberately processing photographic film in a chemical solution intended for a different type of film. The effect was discovered independently by many different photographers often by mistake in the days of film photography. The process is seen most often in fashion advertising and band photography, and in more recent years has become associated with the Lo-fi photography movement.
Color cross processed photographs are often characterized by unnatural colors and high contrast. The results of cross processing differ from case to case, as the results are determined by many factors such as the make and type of the film used, the amount of light exposed onto the film and the chemical used to develop the film.
Cross processing effects can be simulated in digital photography by a number of techniques involving the manipulation of contrast/brightness, hue/saturation and curves in image editors such as Adobe Photoshop.

Luxury Black & White Actions
All photography was originally monochrome, or black-and-white. Even after color film was readily available, black-and-white photography continued to dominate for decades, due to its lower cost and its "classic" photographic look. It is important to note that some monochromatic pictures are not always pure blacks and whites, but also contain other hues depending on the process.
Some full color digital images are processed using a variety of techniques to create black and whites, and some manufacturers produce digital cameras that exclusively shoot monochrome.

Split Toning B&W Actions
Split Toning is an effect which has its origins in the days of film and it involves tinting the highlights in a black and white image one color and the shadows another color. The best results are where you use opposite colors for each, such as yellow and blue, green and magenta and so on. It's a technique that will add a lovely fine-art look to your shots, full of rich and sumptuous tones, and the good news is, it's possible to recreate this effect in Photoshop.

Ok this file has ready rendered objects. I made this to use it for coloring my plans, making them look like they are done manually with water-colors, and presenting them to clients. There is another file with surface coloring patterns that goes along with this file.

you can duplicate the layer you wish to use on your photoshop file that has your plan and then you can play with it. Note that trees and shrubs layers should be placed in order above each other so bigger trees are above smaller trees and shrubs, so the shadows look right.

Watercolor Brush and Bleach

This is a further modification of my Crayon Brush converted to a watercolor brush. In addition there is a brush made from the splatter pattern to use as a bleaching brush.

Off white color for the Paper can be picked from the lower edge of the image.

For similar results, set the Main brush to Opacity 94% / Flow to 3%. Set Erase brush to Bleach Brush with same settings. You may find that decreasing the size of the bleaching brush and increasing the flow a little bit ( to say 7-9%) will give you better results.

Do not use White as a color as in watercolor relies on the color of the paper and the translucency of the medium.

Canvas sizes at 2000w and 1000H will give you enough room to play with default brush sizes.

This brush has a nice imitation of paper saturation and texture (though there isn't a texture applied to it, but instead relies on Scattering and a jagged brush tip.

Looky here, brushes!
So while *greybriar and I were sitting at the table working on commissions last night, they suggested I make a gem brush to spare myself from hours of painting each and every one of them by hand. BEST. IDEA. EVER. So this morning for a few hours I sat and made these 25 brushes of pure unadulterated magic. I'm debating making a tutorial on how to use them, but its more fun to actually figure out how to make them work instead of doing it "my way". Anyway, yay brushes! 8D
These were created in Photoshop CS2 and should be compatible from CS2 and onward~

Rules - If you use them, please give me credit and a link back to either this deviation or my page would be greatly appreciated! You can use these for anything you want, including commercial work. The only thing I don't allow is selling the brushes exactly as they are, so that means don't stamp them on a plain white bg and try to make cash off them.

This is a set of painterly brushes I created for Photoshop {cs and above only-apologies} that I wanted to share. I use these all the time and thought others might appreciate them. There are 18 brushes in the set:

Dynamic Water Chalk- Gives a soft textured watercolor feel

Chalk Tumblr- An excellent sketching brush with a charcoal like quality

Impressionist 1- A tighter impressionist sketcher good for value studies and sketching

Manga Studio v5 Brushes for Speedpainting

Manga Studio version 5 Custom Brushes for Digital painting and Speedpainting – to Download Free. These are all my own work.

They are in the zip file that can be downloaded from this page. People are welcome to download them and use them ( even commercially) but please do not re-distribute them as your own …instead please point others to this page.

I think this is my best set of brushes yet… and I genuinely don’t know of a better or more comprehensive set of general painting brushes ... please do try them and tell me what you think. There are ten brushes and 4 blenders. However, the brushes come with a set of carefully selected controls in the tool property menu that make each brush capable of many different effects.
They work best with an intuous tablet or Cintiq as they make use of pressure sensitive and tilt controls. Note that where I describe changing the “Direction” you will need to go to the Direction control in the Tool Property palette and click on the little icon at the end of the line… this opens up the options that I describe… i.e None/Line Orientation /Random.

Main Painting workhorse brushes …

A) PAINTING - Like a round pointed sable brush. Size sensitive to pressure… lays down basic color areas and lines. Options… Click “mix ground color” and it works like painting wet paint onto wet paint…blending as you paint. Click “Spray” and its like a crayon or pastel. Tilt pen to a low angle and the tip behaves like a calligraphy pen.
B) SQUAREPAINT – A wedge brush in which pressure changes the opacity and pen tilt controls the brush size (2) With the shift key it draws straight lines and if you hold the pen a different tilt angles at both end then the line will be straight per tapered. (3) this too has the “Mix Ground Color” option that you can choose. (4) Click “border of Watercolor” to get a line border. (5) Set Direction to Random for a rougher look. (6) Click Spray” for a rugh texture. (7) Spray and Border of Watercolor for this effect. (8) shows the line width variation by tilting the pen.
C) BLOCKPAINT …. Similar to Aquarepaint but opacity is now controlled by the velocity of the pen stroke. Also the brushwidth is supersensitive to pen tilt. (2) Click Ribbbon (3) click Ribbon and Border of Watercolor (4) Click just Border of watercolour (5) Spray (6) Spray and Border of watercolour

Then the special effects brushes

C) 2C OneHAIR - Uses both the primary and the secondary selected colors. (1) it is mainly designed for painting strands of hair…Direction is set to “Line orientation”. (2) if you set Direction to “none” (3) if you set Direction to “Random” You also get really interesting extra effects by clicking Ribbon or Spray…. In fact the spray effect is a fantastic surprise.
D) SPIKE- (1) Direction is by default set to “line orientation” to give a beautiful streaky Dry Brush effect. (2) Change direction to “none for this alternative effect (3) Change direction to “Random” to get this spiky dabble brush effect ( 4) the brush can be used with “mix ground color” option for a wet on wet paint effect (5) click “Ribbon” and draw a tight circle to crete these flowers (6) otherwise “ribbon” gives this streaky flame like effect (7) click Spray for this effect
E) DO-WOP …(1) Does great Kirby Kracle effect ( I know of no better version of this effect including any of my own earlier attempts) (2) Set Brush density to “random” or to Pen Pressure for a wide range of subtle effects (3) change direction to “none” to get this panther fur / lizard skin effect

G) Leaves -- uses both selected colors for this realistic vegetation effect
H) GRIND (1) default setting gives a GIGER like Alien texture. (2) Change direction to “None” and it makes good high rise buildings (3) Spray turns it to a rough texture
I) CHUNK - for Impressionist painting. (1) is the basic streaky stroke (Van Gogh ?) (2) set Spray or (3) set Space to Fixed to get the Monet effect (4) Change direction to “none for this effect (6) Can be used with “Mix ground Color

SPONGY Blur blender with a texture that is somewhere between a dry brush and a sponge effect. Depending how you move the pen.

To install the brushes ( or selected brushes if you don't want all of them ) Click the dowload button on this page to download the zip file... then extract the brushes from the zip file to any folder you like. In Manga Studio v5 you can right click on any brush in the subtool folder and there appears an option to "import Sub Tool" ... click on that and navigate to the extracted brush that you want to install... ...Done

I had a hard time myself looking through the web for a pattern or high-resolution scan of this kind of paper texture. I was looking either for a watercolor paper texture, or something which resembled those rough papers for pastel painting. Couldn't find any, then I scanned and made a seamless .PAT file of it.

1) Maru --- my best approximation to a Maru pen... ( at sizes below 15 its like a Maru Pen at larger sizes it behaves like a Kolinsky Sable brush
2) Shiner --- a calligraphy pen with attitude
3)Ribbonline - beautiful lines created by extreme use of Watercolor effect
4)Machine - Based on the behavior of a Perry no88 ( Classic British dip pen) it gives a constant rapidiograph line at low pressures but gets lively with higher pressures... good for drawing Machines
5)Drops white -- this is Drops or bubbles or splashes... it uses the second selected color ( which is usually white) draw with this whaite onto a darker background ( black or Blue)....I used it in this Lara croft picture..[link]
6)FireTip --- no longer need to use those precreated fire patterns.. now you can draw your own. Pick a bright yellow color and draw randomly on a dark brown, black or dark red background. To finish it use the Blur brush lightly on about two thirds of the flames and leave a third looking sharp. If you click the "Ribbon" option it makes fliying sparks which you can add to your fire.
7) MecaBox -- You can build a complex wall of machinery with this
8) Hairpaint ... for drawing hair
9) Hairpaint Light --- even better for drawing thin hair
10) Parallel Lines
11) Flashline
12) Flameuliser ... This is extremely useful .. you will see that a lot of top end artists are adding sparks or hazy dust particles randomly across dramatic scenes... they give an extra realism and power to the picture... This brush is designed for producing those things

Alright there are many requested notes asking me many questions. I will explain them all here as well!

Which brushes are the best to use?
No, there is no best brushes. It's all depending on the each person.
First of all, I want to suggest that brushes are not the most important part for painting, but your practicing and hard working will make you paint better! ( I mean yes they are helpful when we use for specific things, and we feel comfortable to use them, so we feel enjoy painting. ) However, the best brushes for you are the ones that make you want to continue painting with them.
As long as you try and you like them!

From the brushes that I've shared, I used them all in their own specific ways. [ Basic Painting Brushes ] are what I used mostly before, and [ Winter 2012 brushes ] I like to use them for sketches and painterly style more.

I also still try to create new ones to see if I will like them even more! and yes I have found that [ Wet edge option ] and [ Color dynamic option ] can be useful to improve the brushes.
You will find that the new brushes set that I've made are included some options. ( You can download and try them from "Download" >>> ^^ )

What you need to know

* From the image above, the names are just for fancy and separate them from others! lol Every brush can be used for anything and it depends on you!

* For Photoshop only! ( Recommend for CS 5 and above, but if you have older versions please try them and I think they work fine )

* I don't need credit for this. I love brushes! and like to try making new ones. Please feel free to use.

Finally, I love to collect brushes from other artists and tried them all. I learnt them to see the differences and I really enjoy using them. Their brushes are amazing and I recommend you to try them all. ^^= Of course, they are amazing artists and thank you so much for sharing them to us all!
