Google's new web browser, Chrome, was used by 2.03% of the 2.5M visitors to access deviantART.com on September 3rd, 2008.Pretty remarkable market penetration for the one day this thing has been accessible to the public. In other news, I'm not sure if you guys are aware that there are 2.5 million visits to deviantART every day.Lots of people like art.2% of them now use Chrome! Except me, since, I flicked PC's off a while ago and the Mac version isn't available yet. -- A$spyed sense:comment, because you care.share your love and not your hate.love the artist, before yourself.meditate on this.Ninja image created by *wildlifehoodoo

lolly wrote a pretty awesome journal regarding the symbols on deviantART (the ones next to user names) and some of the challenges we've faced with them over the years.for sure, we've bitched and moaned about the issues they bring up. but what i always conclude on the subject is that people are extremely passionate about these symbols. and for this reason, they are awesome. some discussion came up the other day about changing them from characters to small pixel art graphics to represent different people in the community. What do you think about it? Come to think of it I should put out a poll on the front page to replace that stupid snakes on a plane one. lolRegarding lolly. You can't quite imagine how bummed I am not to have him around, laughing in the hallways, bringing to everyone's attention exactly what moronic or awesome thing someone out there did either on youtube, 4chan, encyclopedia dramatica, or wherever. I have to say that +watching him makes up for a little of that. Skyping is good too. But it's not quite the same at all in the end. We miss you man! On the flip side, a big cheer is in order for Fiona Hooley ($chix0r) who will now be heading up one part of the director role. It's a new position titled Community Operations and it specifically oversees Help Desk and the Copyright & Etiquette team. Congrats $chix0r!! Unofficially, we're also going to be looking for folks from the community who want to hold staff positions working directly with the community to help design and build new features and revamp older ones. I'll definitely be looking very closely at the contributors to my deviantART Ideas Favorites Folder for starters. If you're interested in this sort of job... (disclaimer: it's a really tough one to get)... continue to post screenshot/mockup suggestions for features you'd like to see on that same da ideas folder. And in personal news."All we are is dust in the wind."My stepfather passed yesterday. One of the nicest people you'd ever meet. 55 years old. Had a laugh that sounded like mutley.. from dastardly and mutley? Anyone remember that cartoon? It's one of the many things I'm going to miss a lot about him. Rest in Peace Sherwin Tilton. We've gotta do something about the big C folks. It's a dreadful thing. We're continuing to look in to ways deviantART staff and the community can help that fight.
As you know, deviantART's birthday is August 7th, 2000. So this year I decided to take a look at all 8 years individually, and I wanted to share some of my findings for fun. Here goes.Firstly, you should know that deviantART was founded in April of 2000 and actually launched in August. In April things like deviantART's name and all co-founders weren't quite on board yet as it remained a twinkle in °jark's eye, and a concept I'd always wanted to revisit from back in the WinAMP Facelift days. °matteo in April was actively running the most awesome artist tutorials site over at (what was) WastedYouth.org. And we were all in part working on other projects. What's important is that there were a number of testers that joined between April and August or were ported over from DMusic. Later, non-deviantART participants from the DMusic database were removed when the companies were split. So here are some awesome stats.* Between August 7th, 2000 and December 31st, 2000Approximately 3500 deviants joined the site. Over 500 of them (14%) are *active* *today*. Now, at first glance that may not sound impressive, but if you consider how many of those folks likely have different accounts now, and the fact that 8 years have passed ... it's pretty damn impressive!!To honor these folks, as of today, we've issued a FREE one year subscription to each of them, even though a large number were already subscribers! Thank you so much for being the foundation of what is deviantART today. We you!Of course, there are many incredibly important people who joined on January 1st 2001, and every day thereafter. We you also We now have over 7.5 million deviants on the site and growing by tens of thousands per day!!Happy Birthday everyone. Cheers to many years of being together sharing our art and our love with one another. -- A$spyed sense:comment, because you care.share your love and not your hate.love the artist, before yourself.meditate on this.Ninja image created by *wildlifehoodoo

How are you guys doing? If there's anything you want me to know about deviantART's state of affairs, post it here. We can have our own little private forum thread.Over here in Hollywood, I'm thinking of sparking up a little art gallery to feature artists on a monthly basis. I don't get to spend enough time with the community, and I figure if we just host an ongoing venue I can go down there and see folks.Turns out there's a lot of deviants in West Hollywood. Who would have thought, eh? Yesterday for example there were 13,000 visitors just from West Hollywood. Over 1200 deviants within 5 kilometers are located here. For fun, I ran a check and found that there are 96 deviants within 5 kilometers who aren't staff and have over 1,000 page views.Pretty awesome turn out for what is ultimately a small part of Los Angeles.$trowlandson and I, $Waveswinger and others are looking in to a few venues in the city in our spare time (as if we have any) to find a cool hang out. And if we can do something fun with it, maybe we'll do something similar in other cities! What do you think of that? But in the meantime, a pat on the back.I left the day of launch. Partly because I couldn't change my flights and things... and uhh, cuz I didn't want to. But I also saw it as an opportunity to give the team lots of rope to make mistakes. It's an ultimate sign of trust, for, ultimately, a hugely trustworthy team.I love the people I work with. We've got it all here; the smartest both technically and socially. We've got guts. We've got problem solvers who are empowered to impact change. We've got humility, and a common bond of pure hearts, great intentions and the will to see good things come to life for a community we all care deeply about. How could one not care about this community? Speaking of which, I've never seen a launch with nearly 14,000 comments on a launch article and 4000+ on the poll that goes with it. THAT is unparalleled unless you can come up with another example. All our are belong. -- Ap.s. Digg.com's most popular article in the past 365 days had 30,000 diggs, BUT only 700 some comments... other articles on digg have had up to 2000 comments.... can you find better examples? p.p.s. you'll be Sit Back-ing soon. hehe$spyed sense:comment, because you care.share your love and not your hate.love the artist, before yourself.meditate on this.Ninja image created by *wildlifehoodoo

As far as ninjas go I suppose this is about as bad ass as it gets. A million thanks to ^Ikue and `meanbones for helping me with this new journal CSS. To the folks who read and reply to my journals regularly; do you like this? is it easy to read what i'm writing? is the font size correct and are the colors easy on the eyes? etc.? i hope so. if not we'll make some modifications!Short version: v6 is coming in about two weeks. Give or take a month. I know you're wondering. V6 is well on its way. Beta testing the new message center is sick.. I think I've gone through about 6000 deviations in my deviantWATCH. It's fun to do, it kind of feels like curating a gallery for things I like and I create page after page of thumbnails I want to check out. Now, if I could just slideshow them after I was done.......... mmm. Be excited. I sincerely am. This is a srsly awesome time to be a deviant. I don't think beta testers have been given the new sleek browse technology. Pages in v6 test are still loading without sleek mode. You know, old fashioned "click-pageload" instead of "click-swoosh." Hopefully that will roll out for you guys in the coming days; it's insanely fast. I couldn't believe it when I saw the performance difference. I wondered instantly if it would get slower once it went out to everyone so I asked. Actually, it'll get faster. Insane.Love.$spyedperception is reality

deviantART has reached the privileged status of web community to benefit from the contributions of SPAMMERS. Industry reports tell us that many companies, like deviantART, are spending up to 25% of all of their resources to fight SPAM on behalf of their users. Largely because SPAM companies and individuals tend to be a moving target, constantly altering their strategy for how to SPAM to circumvent protection built by companies. We're dedicating considerable resources to this problem at this point, but not nearly 25% We are now deploying extensions and modifications to our existing SPAM systems to be considerably more effective at managing this. For example:* When people SPAM you, you can report SPAM on the comment. But often the same user hits you 5 times and you have to click the button over and over. We're considering an obvious addition where clicking the first SPAM message detects all the others left, and allows you to REPORT and AUTO-HIDE all of them at once. ... I know my user page could use it, how about yours? * Similar functionality for Notes, deviations, etc.* We're putting in to place a Chief of SPAM! A desk has been present for some time that collects all SPAM reports for human review. An individual reporting to the CEA/CommDev department will be dedicated to this role, it will no longer be divided among other tasks. And the desk is being heavily modified and improved with lots of features and functions for admins to more easily kick some ass!* We are dedicated to deploying as many additional resources to this problem as necessary to improve the removal of SPAM and the overall experience of deviantART.Back to work!

So by now you are probably wondering how all this deviantART v6 stuff is going to go down. I'll cover all of that really quick.First though, I haven't been updating my journal due to v6 work, it's been intense stuff around here and we've been really focused for the big day. But now that we're nearly ready I'm back on the horse. A new CSS is on its way for the journal too.. which I'm so excited about. WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN?deviantART v6 is going to launch over the course of the coming weeks. I say coming weeks because the current plan is to release it over time. Approximately 11 days at last count is how long launch is going to take. The launch involves a complete migration of messages currently in the message center for all members (biiiiiiillliiiiiiooonnss of messages!!) Launch will happen for approximately 10,000 members at a time with deviantART v6 becoming your new default interface upon completion of migration of all of your messages in to the NEW MESSAGE CENTER!Upon the completion of the full migration, the default interface of deviantART.com will go live for all logged out members. First, Senior Members and Subscribers will get the interface. Then a random selection of members which we will try to balance against recent activity, but no promises! Ultimately after about 11 days deviantART v6 will be completely released!!We will have literally an army of engineers ready and waiting to resolve any issues with bugs, who will otherwise be drinking and celebrating this much anticipated release. And that's how the showdown is gonna go down.
